Treatment of Class III malocclusion in the primary and early mixed dentition using the Kiebach Appliance and Protraction Facemask

Objectives. To evaluate the short and long-term results of using a Modified Hyrax Expander with Protraction Facemask at an early age. Methods. Twenty three patients were treated with Dr. Kiebach\u27s Modified Hyrax Expander and Protraction Facemask at an early age. Lateral Cephalograms were taken at three time points: pre-treatment (T1), post-treatment (T2), and 2 years post-treatment (T3) and evaluated using cephalometric analysis. Results. Statistically significant results were found for all three time points: T2-T1, T3-T2, and T3-T1. The Palatal Plane, Mandibular Plane, and the Occlusal Plane were the only values to show non-significant results throughout the three time points. The overjet and correction for T2-T1 was 52% dental and 48% skeletal. The molar correction for T2-T1 was 115% skeletal and -15% dental. The T3-T2 findings for overjet correction showed a negative 2 mm skeletal correction, but a 1.9 mm dental correction. The same was true for the molar correction for T3-T2. There was a negative 2.16 mm skeletal relapse, but a positive 1.92 mm dental correction. Evaluating the overall change using T3-T1, the results showed a mostly dental correction for overjet at 105% and a molar correction that was 113% dental. Overall, the maxilla moved forward 4.2 mm while the mandible moved forward 4.4 mm. Conclusions. Treatment at a young age using a Modified Hyrax Expander with Protraction Facemask is successful in treating a Class III malocclusion. The correction is both skeletal and dental

Vera started in 1961 with Herb Sturz sitting alone in the alcove adjoining Louis Schweitzer's secretary's office. Today it has grown to 290 employees with offices in Brooklyn, Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Washington, DC.As we mourn our founder, and his successor Michael E. Smith (who died in May), we lean on the lessons they left us and work to build on their legacies.Herb's formula—using compelling data and tireless advocacy to transform unjust systems—continues to succeed. In our 60th year, we are applying that formula at the highest levels of power, as we focus intentionally on eradicating racial injustice. The criminal legal and immigration systems are fundamentally brutal, especially to people of color. Vera exists to transform these systems so that communities can thrive.On the pages that follow, read how Vera seeks to transform the role of the prosecutor to one that pursues justice, not jails; to make sure that every immigrant facing deportation has a government-funded lawyer and a fighting chance to stay with their family and in our communities; and ensure that every incarcerated student has the chance to receive a quality college education. The Development of the WISE (Writing to Inspire Successful Education) Writing Mentoring Program: A University-School Collaboration

Abstract This paper describes the development of a service learning writing mentoring program designed to close the achievement gap in writing proficiency for economically disadvantaged seventh grade students. Compared to writing mentoring studies found in the published literature, this program has three distinguishing components. First, it focused on economically disadvantaged middle school students. Second, it provided writing mentoring through a university-school partnership in which college students provided the intervention in collaboration with a seventh-grade teacher. Third, the program used technology to facilitate the mentoring process. Over the course of an academic year, mentors created videos with feedback on 19 writing assignments. The writing mentoring program was associated with a four-fold increase in the percentage of students who were graded as ‘proficient’ on a state standardized writing exam. These results suggest that semi-virtual, intensive writing mentoring and individualized feedback from college students can close the achievement gap and improve the quality of middle level education provided to economically disadvantaged students

Age-Based Dynamics of a Stable Circulating Cd8 T Cell Repertoire Component

T-cell memory to pathogens can be envisioned as a receptor-based imprint of the pathogenic environment on the naive repertoire of clonotypes. Recurrent exposures to a pathogen inform and reinforce memory, leading to a mature state. The complexity and temporal stability of this system in man is only beginning to be adequately described. We have been using a rank-frequency approach for quantitative analysis of CD8 T cell repertoires. Rank acts as a proxy for previous expansion, and rank-frequency, the number of clonotypes at a particular rank, as a proxy for abundance, with the relation of the two estimating the diversity of the system. Previous analyses of circulating antigen-experienced cytotoxic CD8 T-cell repertoires from adults have shown a complex two-component clonotype distribution. Here we show this is also the case for circulating CD8 T cells expressing the BV19 receptor chain from five adult subjects. When the repertoire characteristic of clonotype stability is added to the analysis, an inverse correlation between clonotype rank frequency and stability is observed. Clonotypes making up the second distributional component are stable; indicating that the circulation can be a depot of selected clonotypes. Temporal repertoire dynamics was further examined for influenza-specific T cells from children, middle-aged, and older adults. Taken together, these analyses describe a dynamic process of system development and aging, with increasing distributional complexity, leading to a stable circulating component, followed by loss of both complexity and stability

The first systematically identified repeating partial tidal disruption event

Tidal disruption events (TDEs) occur when a star enters the tidal radius of a supermassive black hole (SMBH). If the star only grazes the tidal radius, a fraction of the stellar mass will be accreted in a partial TDE (pTDE). The remainder can continue orbiting and may re-disrupted at pericenter, causing a repeating pTDE. pTDEs may be as or more common than full TDEs (fTDEs), yet few are known. In this work, we present the discovery of the first repeating pTDE from a systematically-selected sample, AT\,2020vdq. AT\,2020vdq was originally identified as an optically- and radio-flaring TDE. Around $3$ years after its discovery, it rebrightened dramatically and rapidly in the optical. The optical flare was remarkably fast and luminous compared to previous TDEs. It was accompanied by extremely broad (${\sim}0.1c$) optical/UV spectral features and faint X-ray emission ($L_X \sim 3\times10^{41}$\,erg\,s$^{-1}$), but no new radio-emitting component. Based on the transient optical/UV spectral features and the broadband light curve, we show that AT\,2020vdq is a repeating pTDE. We then use it to constrain TDE models; in particular, we favor a star originally in a very tight binary system that is tidally broken apart by the Hills mechanism. We also constrain the repeating pTDE rate to be $10^{-6}$ to $10^{-5}$ yr$^{-1}$ galaxy$^{-1}$, with uncertainties dominated by the unknown distribution of pTDE repeat timescales. A Qualitative Exploration of the Functional, Social, and Emotional Impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic on People Who Use Drugs

Since 2020, people who use drugs (PWUD) experienced heightened risks related to drug supply disruptions, contamination, overdose, social isolation, and increased stress. This study explored how the lives of PWUD changed in Philadelphia over a one-year period. Using semi-structured interviews with 20 participants in a Housing First, low-barrier medication for opioid use (MOUD) program in Philadelphia, the effects of the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic on the daily lives, resources, functioning, substance use, and treatment of PWUD were explored. Interviews were analyzed using a combination of directed and conventional content analysis. Six overarching themes emerged during data analysis: (1) response to the pandemic; (2) access to MOUD and support services; (3) substance use; (4) impacts on mental health, physical health, and daily functioning; (5) social network impacts; and (6) fulfillment of basic needs. Participants reported disruptions in every domain of life, challenges meeting their basic needs, and elevated risk for adverse events. MOUD service providers offset some risks and provided material supports, treatment, social interaction, and emotional support. These results highlight how there were significant disruptions to the lives of PWUD during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic and identified critical areas for future intervention and policies
