Temporal Ordering in Quantum Mechanics
We examine the measurability of the temporal ordering of two events, as well
as event coincidences. In classical mechanics, a measurement of the
order-of-arrival of two particles is shown to be equivalent to a measurement
involving only one particle (in higher dimensions). In quantum mechanics, we
find that diffraction effects introduce a minimum inaccuracy to which the
temporal order-of-arrival can be determined unambiguously. The minimum
inaccuracy of the measurement is given by dt=1/E where E is the total kinetic
energy of the two particles. Similar restrictions apply to the case of
coincidence measurements. We show that these limitations are much weaker than
limitations on measuring the time-of-arrival of a particle to a fixed location.Comment: New section added, arguing that order-of-arrival can be measured more
accurately than time-of-arrival. To appear in Journal of Physics

Automatic mapping of strip mine operations from spacecraft data
The author has identified the following significant results. Computer techniques were applied to process ERTS tapes acquired over coal mining operations in southeastern Ohio on 21 August 1972 and 3 September 1973. ERTS products obtained included geometrically-correct map overlays, at scales from 1:24,000 to 1:250,000, showing stripped earth, partially reclaimed earth, water, and natural vegetation. Computer-generated tables listing the area covered by each land-water category in square kilometers were also produced. By comparing these mapping products, the study demonstrates the capability of ERTS to monitor changes in the extent of stripping and reclamation. NASA C-130 photography acquired on 7 September 1973 when compared with the ERTS products generated from the 3 September 1973 tape established the categorization accuracy to be better than 90%. It is estimated that the stripping and reclamation maps and data were produced from the ERTS CCTs at a tenth of the cost of conventional techniques
Automated strip-mine and reclamation mapping from ERTS
The author has identified the following significant results. Computer processing techniques were applied to ERTS-1 computer-compatible tape (CCT) data acquired in August 1972 on the Ohio Power Company's coal mining operation in Muskingum County, Ohio. Processing results succeeded in automatically classifying, with an accuracy greater than 90%: (1) stripped earth and major sources of erosion; (2) partially reclaimed areas and minor sources of erosion; (3) water with sedimentation; (4) water without sedimentation; and (5) vegetation. Computer-generated tables listing the area in acres and square kilometers were produced for each target category. Processing results also included geometrically corrected map overlays, one for each target category, drawn on a transparent material by a pen under computer control. Each target category is assigned a distinctive color on the overlay to facilitate interpretation. The overlays, drawn at a scale of 1:250,000 when placed over an AMS map of the same area, immediately provided map locations for each target. These mapping products were generated at a tenth of the cost of conventional mapping techniques
A Physical Realization of the Generalized PT-, C-, and CPT-Symmetries and the Position Operator for Klein-Gordon Fields
Generalized parity (P), time-reversal (T), and charge-conjugation
(C)operators were initially definedin the study of the pseudo-Hermitian
Hamiltonians. We construct a concrete realization of these operators for
Klein-Gordon fields and show that in this realization PT and C operators
respectively correspond to the ordinary time-reversal and charge-grading
operations. Furthermore, we present a complete description of the quantum
mechanics of Klein-Gordon fields that is based on the construction of a Hilbert
space with a relativistically invariant, positive-definite, and conserved inner
product. In particular we offer a natural construction of a position operator
and the corresponding localized and coherent states. The restriction of this
position operator to the positive-frequency fields coincides with the
Newton-Wigner operator. Our approach does not rely on the conventional
restriction to positive-frequency fields. Yet it provides a consistent quantum
mechanical description of Klein-Gordon fields with a genuine probabilistic
interpretation.Comment: 20 pages, published versio
Correlation of Preston-tube data with laminar skin friction (Log No. J12984)
Preston tube data within laminar boundary layers obtained on a sharp ten-degree cone in the NASA Ames eleven-foot transonic wind tunnel are correlated with the corresponding values of theoretical skin friction. Data were obtained over a Mach number range of 0.30 to 0.95 and unit Reynolds numbers of 9.84, 13.1, and 16.4 million per meter. The rms scatter of skin friction coefficient about the correlation is of the order of one percent, which is comparable to the reported accuracy for calibrations of Preston tubes in incompressible pipe flows. In contrast to previous works on Preston tube/skin friction correlations, which are based on the physical height of the probe's face, this satisfactory correlation for compressible boundary layer flows is achieved by accounting for the effects of a variable "effective" height of the probe. The coefficients, which appear in the correlation, are dependent on the particular tunnel environment. The general procedure can be used to define correlations for other wind tunnels
Ionisation by quantised electromagnetic fields: The photoelectric effect
In this paper we explain the photoelectric effect in a variant of the
standard model of non relativistic quantum electrodynamics, which is in some
aspects more closely related to the physical picture, than the one studied in
[BKZ]: Now we can apply our results to an electron with more than one bound
state and to a larger class of electron-photon interactions. We will specify a
situation, where ionisation probability in second order is a weighted sum of
single photon terms. Furthermore we will see, that Einstein's equality
for the maximal kinetic energy of
the electron, energy of the photon and ionisation gap
is the crucial condition for these single photon terms to be nonzero.Comment: 59 pages, LATEX2
Impact of Changes in U.S. Grain Standards on Discounts for Insects in Stored Grain
The Federal Grain Inspection Service changed U.S. grain standards in 1988. Insect discounts given at country elevators and at terminal elevators were analyzed to determine impacts of the new standards. Insect discounts influence grain quality by affecting insect control decisions by producers and country elevator managers.Grain Inspection, Insect Discounts, Wheat, Farm Storage, Elevator Storage, Crop Production/Industries,
