    Association of Breakfast Intake with Obesity, Dietary and Physical Activity Behavior Among Urban School-Aged Adolescents in Delhi, India: Results of a Cross-Sectional Study

    In developed countries, regular breakfast consumption is inversely associated with excess weight and directly associated with better dietary and improved physical activity behaviors. Our objective was to describe the frequency of breakfast consumption among school-going adolescents in Delhi and evaluate its association with overweight and obesity as well as other dietary, physical activity, and sedentary behaviors. Methods: Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Eight schools (Private and Government) of Delhi in the year 2006. Participants: 1814 students from 8th and 10th grades; response rate was 87.2%; 55% were 8th graders, 60% were boys and 52% attended Private schools. Main outcome measures: Body mass index, self-reported breakfast consumption, diet and physical activity related behaviors, and psychosocial factors. Data analysis: Mixed effects regression models were employed, adjusting for age, gender, grade level and school type (SES). Results: Significantly more Government school (lower SES) students consumed breakfast daily as compared to Private school (higher SES) students (73.8% vs. 66.3%; p<0.01). More 8th graders consumed breakfast daily vs. 10th graders (72.3% vs. 67.0%; p<0.05). A dose-response relationship was observed such that overall prevalence of overweight and obesity among adolescents who consumed breakfast daily (14.6%) was significantly lower vs. those who only sometimes (15.2%) or never (22.9%) consumed breakfast (p<0.05 for trend). This relationship was statistically significant for boys (15.4 % vs. 16.5% vs. 26.0; p<0.05 for trend) but not for girls. Intake of dairy products, fruits and vegetables was 5.5 (95% CI 2.4-12.5), 1.7 (95% CI 1.1-2.5) and 2.2 (95% CI 1.3-3.5) times higher among those who consumed breakfast daily vs. those who never consumed breakfast. Breakfast consumption was associated with greater physical activity vs. those who never consumed breakfast. Positive values and beliefs about healthy eating; body image satisfaction; and positive peer and parental influence were positively associated with daily breakfast consumption, while depression was negatively associated. Conclusion: Daily breakfast consumption is associated with less overweight and obesity and with healthier dietary-and physical activity-related behaviors among urban Indian students.     Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles and biopolymer nanocomposites: a comparative study on physico-chemical, antimicrobial and anticancer activity

    The current report was intended towards comparative study of green-synthesized biogenic Rhubarb silver nanoparticles (RS-AgNPs) and chitosan crosslinked silver nanocomposites (CSHD-AgNCs). The physico-chemical characterization was done by UV-visible, FTIR, scanning electron microscopy (SUM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), TGA, XRD and zeta potential(zeta). The analysis and spectroscopic characterization was done by SEM and TEM and their results reveal that the nanoparticles are spherical in shape, with average size ranges from 5 to 50 nm, and was gathered by face centered cubic (FCC) structure throughout the polymer matrix and stable without any protecting or capping reagents over 450 days. The antimicrobial property of RS-AgNPs and CSHD-AgNCs (zeta = +29.6 and +32.8 mV) was evaluated against E. coli and S. aureus and showed an effective inhibitory property. The RS-AgNPs and CSHD-AgNCs were assessed for their anticancer activity against HeLa cell line by MTT method, and it reveals a dose response activity, time and cell line-dependent cytotoxicity. Based on the results obtained, the RS-AgNPs exhibited higher toxicity over CSHD-AgNCs after 24 h incubation of HeLa cells with different concentrations and is negligible for the aqueous Rhubarb extract.     Chemical characteristics of PM<SUB>10</SUB> aerosols and airmass trajectories over Bay of Bengal and Arabian sea during ICARB

    For the first time, chemical characterization of PM10 aerosols was attempted over the Bay of Bengal (BoB) and Arabian Sea (AS) during the ICARB campaign. Dominance of SO42-, NH4+ and NO3- was noticed over both the regions which indicated the presence of ammonium sulphate and ammonium nitrate as major water soluble particles playing a very important role in the radiation budget. It was observed that all the chemical constituents had higher concentrations over Bay of Bengal as compared to Arabian Sea. Higher concentrations were observed near the Indian coast showing influence of landmass indicating that gaseous pollutants like SO2, NH3 and NO x are transported over to the sea regions which consequently contribute to higher SO42-, NH4+ and NO3- aerosols respectively. The most polluted region over BoB was 13&#176;-19&#176;N and 70&#176;-90&#176;E while it was near 11&#176;N and 75&#176;E over AS. Although the concentrations were higher over Bay of Bengal for all the chemical constituents of PM10 aerosols, per cent non-sea salt (nss) fraction (with respect to Na) was higher over Arabian Sea. Very low Ca2+ concentration was observed at Arabian Sea which led to higher atmospheric acidity as compared to BoB. Nss SO42-alone contributed 48% of total water soluble fraction over BoB as well as AS. Ratios SO42- /NO3- over both the regions (7.8 and 9 over BoB and AS respectively) were very high as compared to reported values at land sites like Allahabad (0.63) and Kanpur (0.66) which may be due to very low NO.3 over sea regions as compared to land sites. Air trajectory analysis showed four classes: (i) airmass passing through Indian land, (ii) from oceanic region, (iii) northern Arabian Sea and Middle East and (iv) African continent. The highest nss SO42- was observed during airmasses coming from the Indian land side while lowest concentrations were observed when the air was coming from oceanic regions. Moderate concentrations of nss SO2- 4 were observed when air was seen moving from the Middle East and African continent. The pH of rainwater was observed to be in the range of 5.9-6.5 which is lower than the values reported over land sites. Similar feature was reported over the Indian Ocean during INDOEX indicating that marine atmosphere had more free acidity than land atmosphere

    Weight-related concerns and weight-control behaviors among overweight adolescents in Delhi, India: A cross-sectional study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Obesity is emerging as a public health problem among adolescents in India. The aim of this study was to describe specific weight-related concerns among school-going youth in Delhi, India and to assess the prevalence of weight control behaviors, including healthy and unhealthy ones. Differences by weight status, gender, grade level, and school-type (a proxy for SES in this setting) are considered.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This study is cross-sectional by design. A sample of eighth and tenth graders (n = 1818) enrolled in Private (middle-high SES) and Government (low SES) schools (n = 8) in Delhi, India participated. All students' height and weight were measured. Students participated in a survey of weight-related concerns and weight-control behaviors, as well. Mixed-effects regression models were used to test for differences in weight-related concerns and weight-control behaviors across key factors of interest (i.e., weight status, gender, grade level, and SES).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The combined prevalence of obesity and overweight was 16.6%, overall. Controlling one's weight was important to overweight and non-overweight youth, alike (94.2% v. 84.8%, <it>p </it>< 0.001). Significantly more overweight or obese youth reported trying to control their weight last year, compared to those who were not overweight (68.1% v. 18.0%, <it>p </it>< 0.001). Healthy weight control behaviors were more common than unhealthy or extreme practices, although the latter were still prevalent. Half of the overweight or obese students misclassified their weight status, while about 1 in 10 non-overweight youth did the same. Body dissatisfaction was highest among overweight youth and girls.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Interventions to promote healthy weight control should be pertinent to and well-received by school-going youth in India. Healthy weight control practices need to be explicitly encouraged and unhealthy practices reduced. Future interventions should address issues specific to body image, too, as body dissatisfaction was not uncommon among youth.</p

    To assess the influence of tobacco use by family members, peers and role models on tobacco use status of adolescents living in urban slums of Delhi, India: Results from a longitudinal study

    Objective: To assess the longitudinal relationship between tobacco use by family members, peers and role models on tobacco use behavior of adolescents living in low socio-economic communities of Delhi, India. Methods: Project ACTIVITY (Advancing Cessation of Tobacco in Vulnerable Indian Tobacco Consuming Youth), a community-based cluster-randomized trial. Adolescents (n=1720) belonging to low socio-economic status from control communities of Project ACTIVITY, including resettlement colonies and adjacent Jhuggi-Jhopris (JJs), who were non-tobacco users at baseline and participated in all the three repeated surveys (2009, 2010, 2011). The main outcome measure in the study was current tobacco use at the endline. Tobacco use by family members, friends and role models was measured at baseline. Results: The influence of tobacco use by friends on the onset of youth tobacco use was significant (OR=2.68, 95% CI=1.27-5.64) and by brother was even stronger (OR=4.36, 95% CI=1.66-11.45). Both effects were consistent across gender, age group and were also stronger than the effects of tobacco use by father (OR=1.51, 95% CI=0.70-3.23). Conclusion: Thus, study highlights the need to engage siblings and peers in efforts to prevent tobacco use and promote tobacco cessation among adolescents in resourcepoor, slum communities in India

    Abstract The present study was aimed to investigate the effects of sodium arsenite on biochemical and hematologic parameters in carp (Cyprinus carpio, Linnaeus 1758) after exposed to arsenic. In this study fish were exposed to 0.01 mg/L arsenic. Our results indicated that significant suppression in Granulocyte, erythrocyte, hemoglobin, hematocrit values were decreased due to oxidative toxicity of arsenic in experimental group while comparing with control group. In addition levels of leucocyte, agranulocyte, MCV (mean corpuscular volume), MCH (mean corpuscular hemoglobin) and MCHC (mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration) increased in the arsenic group (P&lt;0.05) and hematological functions of common carp blood, after being exposed to arsenic

    Growth performance and carcass characteristics of growing ram lambs fed sweet sorghum bagasse-based complete rations varying in roughage-to-concentrate ratios

    Different roughage-to-concentrate ratios of sweet sorghum bagasse (SSB) (a by-product of the biofuel industry)-based complete diets were assessed. Twenty four growing Nellore × Deccani ram lambs aged about 3 months (average body wt., 10.62 ± 0.25 kg) were randomly allotted to four complete rations (CR) varying in roughage-to-concentrate ratios viz. 60:40 (CR-I), 50:50 (CR-II), 40:60 (CR-III) and 30:70(CR-IV) for a period of 180 days. The feed intake was comparable among the lambs fed different experimental complete diets. Average daily weight gain (in grams) was 77.31 ± 4.90, 81.76 ± 5.16, 85.83 ± 2.83 and 86.30 ± 3.25, and feed conversion ratio (in kilograms of feed per kilogram gain) averaged 11.42 ± 0.68, 10.57 ± 0.64, 10.17 ± 0.37 and 9.96 ± 0.38 in ram lambs fed CR-I, CR-II, CR-III and CR-IV rations, respectively. Statistically, differences in daily weight gain and feed conversion ratio among the lambs fed four experimental rations were not significant (P > 0.05). The cost per kilogram gain was significantly (P < 0.01) higher in ram lambs fed CR-IV and CR-III rations compared to CR-I ration, and it was comparable between CR-I and CR-II rations. Dressing percentage averaged 44.90 ± 0.15, 42.57 ± 0.72, 43.67 ± 0.16 and 44.42 ± 0.76 for the respective diets. No significant difference and trend was observed in preslaughter weight, empty body weight, carcass weights, dressing percentage, wholesale cuts and edible and non-edible portions of experimental animals. Similarly, no significant variation could be seen in bone and meat yield (in per cent) and their ratios in various wholesale cuts among the dietary treatments. The roughage-to-concentrate ratio did not affect the chemical composition of meat; however, the fat content of meat was linearly increased with increase in the proportion of concentrate in the diets. The results of the experiment indicated that SSB can be included at 60 % level in the complete diet for economical mutton production from growing Nellore × Deccani ram lambs

    An efficient protocol for in vitro organogenesis and antioxidant studies in Melia dubia Cav

    Melia dubia Cav. (Meliaceae) is a multipurpose tree of tropical and subtropical regions mainly cultivated for its medicinal and industrial importance. Due to its versatile properties, it has been depleted in its natural environment. Moreover due to sluggish and poor seed germination, there is a threat of its gene pool exclusion from the natural habitat. The alternative method for conservation and efficient mass propagation is thus need of the hour. As per the extensive literature survey there is no report on efficient protocol for mass propagation of M. dubia through callus organogenesis. Therefore, the present work was aimed to develop in vitro organogenesis protocol for rapid and large scale production of planting material. From our results, maximum callus percentage, callus weight and fragile callus was observed on 1.0 mg/l benzylaminopurine (BAP) in combination with 0.5 mg/l naphthalene acetic acid (NAA). The callus differentiation was achieved at different concentrations of BAP and indole acetic acid (IAA). Multiple Shoot number per callus propagule 5.30 was observed on 0.5 mg/l BAP and 1 mg/l IAA concentration. The maximum rooting percentage (78.5%), root number per explant (4.33) and root length per explant (4.41 cm) was observed at 0.5 mg/l indol butyric acid (IBA) after 30 days of inoculation. Further the total flavonoid content, phenolic content and antioxidant properties of leaves of in-vitro regenerated plants where studied. Total flavonoids and phenolic content in leaves of in vitro Melia dubia was 0.56 ± 0.8 mg quercitin equivalent (QE) and 2.97 ± 0.17 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE) respectively. The antioxidant property was further assed through measurement of DPPH radical scavenging activity. The in-vitro regeneration protocol can be exploited for commercial cultivation and fulfilling the growing demand for fresh explant material through mass propagation of M. dubia an economically important plant species.Key words: Melia dubia, antioxidant, indole-3-butyric acid, flavonoids and phenolics

    Effect of Feeding Differently Processed Sweet Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) Bagasse Based complete Diet on Nutrient Utilization and Microbial N Supply in Growing Ram Lambs

    This study was carried out to identify appropriate processing method for efficient utilization of sweet sorghum bagasse (SSB), an agro-industrial by product of ethanol industry after blending with concentrate. SSB based complete diet with roughage to concentrate ratio of 50:50 was processed into mash (SSBM), expander extruded pellet (SSBP), chop form (SSBC) and evaluated in comparison to sorghum stover based complete diet in mash form (SSM). Twenty four Nellore X Deccani ram lambs (9 month age; 21.1 ± 0.57 kg body weight) were randomly divided into four groups of six animals each and the experimental complete diets were allotted at random to each group and evaluated for their intake, nutrient utilization and microbial N supply. Among all the groups, the average dry matter (DM) intake (g/kg w0.75), digested DM, organic matter and crude protein were higher (P < 0.01) in lambs fed SSBP diet. The cellulose digestibility was higher (P < 0.05) in lambs fed SSBP diet than those fed SSM and SSBC diets. Intake of digestible crude protein (DCP, g/d) and metabolizable energy (MJ/d) were higher (P < 0.01) in lambs fed SSBP diet. The SSBP diet had higher (P < 0.01) DCP and N (P < 0.05) balance compared to other three diets. Increased (P < 0.01) purine derivatives and microbial N supply was observed in processed diets. Expander extrusion of SSB based complete diet resulted in improved (P < 0.01) efficiency of microbial protein synthesis. It is concluded that, when SSB was processed into complete diets, in terms of nutrient utilization and microbial N supply, the expander extruded pellet diet was better utilized than chopped or mash form by the growing ram lambs
