Foundations in Wisconsin: A Directory [24th ed. 2005]
The 2005 release of Foundations in Wisconsin marks the 24th edition of the print directory and the 5th year of the online version (www.wifoundations.org). The directory is designed as a research tool for grantseekers interested in locating information on private, corporate, and community foundations registered in Wisconsin. Each entry in this new edition has been updated or reviewed to provide the most current information available. Most of the data was extracted from IRS 990-PF tax returns filed by the foundations. However, additional information was obtained from surveys, annual reports, and foundation Web sites.
The 2005 edition documents the significant economic rebound and growth of Wisconsin foundations. The number of active grant making foundations has risen to an all-time high of 1213. Wisconsin foundations have shown small increases as compared to the 2003 edition. The number of active foundations has grown to an all-time high of 1184. Both total assets and grants for the state’s foundations increased from 2003, albeit not to the heights documented in the 2002 edition. Total assets grew by 1.53% and total grants by .23%. North Korean Defector Flows Across Multinational Boundaries: Vulnerabilities and Failures of International Human Rights Mechanisms
In this work, the efficacy of international human rights mechanisms is evaluated in its protections and enforcement of rights for North Korean refugees attempting to reach asylum in South Korea. In studying the rights and protections offered to North Korean defectors on their journey to reach asylum, it is evident that compliance and enforcement of international human rights legislation protecting North Korean defectors is minimally enforced or regarded in the proceedings of the countries they pass through on their way to asylum. This frequently results in repatriation and exploitation of the group, especially in the wake of the 2019 Covid pandemic and the subsequent restrictions on freedom of movement enacted by countries within the region of Southeast Asia

This 22nd edition of Foundations in Wisconsin (2003) is the first produced by the new Marquette University John P. Raynor, S.J., Library. The directory is designed as a research tool for grantseekers interested in locating information on private, corporate, and community foundations registered in Wisconsin. Each entry in this new edition has been updated or reviewed to provide the most current information available. Most of the data was extracted from IRS 990-PF tax returns filed by the foundations. However, additional information was obtained from surveys, annual reports, and foundation Web sites.
The economy has slowed the growth of Wisconsin foundations. While the number of active foundations grew to 1160 (up slightly from 1151 last year), other areas are showing decline. For the first time in 23 years of reporting, both grants and assets decreased rather than increased. Grants decreased by .6% as compared to last year’s increase of 7.7%. Assets declined by 6.3%, down from the .3% increase documented in 2002. A Mightier Pin: Creating a Credible Reference Library on Pinterest at Murray State University
This case study shows how the reference librarians at Murray State University use Pinterest as an added component in reference services. Statistics were collected in an attempt to monitor the number of items shared with the number of people who actively follow each board. This study will help interested reference librarians gain an understanding of how this social media site can be used to promote online resources, both those owned by the institution and those available freely on the internet. It will also serve as an example of how reference librarians can build a reference library within the confines of social media

Pretransplant HLA typing revealed loss of heterozygosity in the major histocompatibility complex in a patient with acute myeloid leukemia
Introduction
Chromosomal abnormalities are frequent events in hematological malignancies. The degree of HLA compatibility between donor and recipient in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is critical.
Purpose of the study
In this report, we describe an acute myeloid leukemia case with loss of heterozygosity (LOH) encompassing the entire HLA.
Materials and methods
HLA molecular typing was performed on peripheral blood (PB) and buccal swabs (BS). Chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) was performed using a whole genome platform.
Results
Typing results on PB sample collected during blast crisis demonstrated homozygosity at the -A, -B, -C, -DR, and -DQ loci. A BS sample demonstrated heterozygosity at all loci. A subsequent PB sample drawn after count recovery confirmed heterozygosity. The CMA performed on PB samples collected during and after blast crisis revealed a large terminal region of copy-neutral LOH involving chromosome region 6p25.3p21.31, spanning approximately 35.9 Mb. The results of the CMA assay on sample collected after count recovery did not demonstrate LOH.
Conclusions
LOH at the HLA gene locus may significantly influence the donor search resulting in mistakenly choosing homozygous donors. We recommend confirming the HLA typing of recipients with hematological malignancies when homozygosity is detected at any locus by using BS samples, or alternatively from PB when remission is achieved
Selective Gold Precipitation by a Tertiary Diamide Driven by Thermodynamic Control
The simple diamide ligand L was previously shown to selectively precipitate gold from acidic solutions typical of e-waste leach streams, with precipitation of gallium, iron, tin, and platinum possible under more forcing conditions. Herein, we report direct competition experiments to afford the order of selectivity. Thermal analysis indicates that the gold-, gallium-, and iron-containing precipitates present as the most thermodynamically stable structures at room temperature, while the tin-containing structure does not. Computational modeling established that the precipitation process is thermodynamically driven, with ion exchange calculations matching the observed experimental selectivity ordering. Calculations also show that the stretched ligand conformation seen in the X-ray crystal structure of the gold-containing precipitate is more strained than in the structures of the other metal precipitates, indicating that intermolecular interactions likely dictate the selectivity ordering. This was confirmed through a combination of Hirshfeld, noncovalent interaction (NCI), and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analyses, which highlight favorable halogen···halogen contacts between metalates and pseudo-anagostic C-H···metal interactions in the crystal structure of the gold-containing precipitate.</p

Status of the European Green Crab, Carcinus maenas, (aka 5-spine crab) in Oregon Estuaries. Report for 2022
The European green crab (Carcinus maenas) has persisted in Oregon and Washington coastal estuaries since the late 1990s. A strong year class arrived during the 1998 El Niño, but numbers decreased and remained below 1 per trap per day until the arrival of the 2015-2016 El Niño. Since then, numbers have increased to an average of around 4-6 crabs per trap per day for intertidal sites and ~ 9 per trap per day in the shallow subtidal. Measurable ecological impact is predicted to occur at around 10-20 per trap per day (Grosholz et al. 2011). Between the two major El Niños, recruitment of young green crabs has been sporadic, with many years of recruitment failures. But after the 2015-2016 El Niño recruitment has been good every year. The Davidson Current transporting larvae from California during the winter no longer appears to be the only source of larvae for our coastal estuaries (Behrens Yamada, Fisher and Kosro 2021). Now that the populations in Oregon, Washington and British Columbia have built up, we have evidence for local larval production and seeding from a genetically distinct population on Vancouver Island (Alan Shanks and Carolyn Tepolt, pers. com.).
This report is a compilation of trapping data for Carcinus maenas from various sources and estuaries. These include the following:
1) Catches of adult crabs in Yaquina Bay using Fukui traps set in the intertidal and in the shallow subtidal. The latter were set at 22 sites along a salinity gradient from South Beach Marina to the Port of Toledo by Mitch Vance of Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
2) Catches of adult crabs at 3 sites in the Salmon estuary using Fukui traps set in intertidal areas by volunteers and by Rebecca Flitcroft from the United Stated Department of Agriculture.
3) Summary of catches of crabs trapped in Coos Bay by Shon Schooler, interns and technicians of South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve. For detailed data on various sites in Coos Bay see Schooler et al. (2022).
4) Catches of adult crabs in Siuslaw and Umpqua estuaries by Shon Schooler and interns.
5) Average catches of Young-Of-The-Year (YOTY, or Age-0) crabs at the end of their first growing season, from 4 Oregon estuaries and Willapa Bay, Washington. This 25-year data set allows us to compare catches of YOTY crabs between years and between estuaries

Complex interactive effects of water mold, herbicide, and the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis on Pacific treefrog Hyliola regilla hosts
Infectious diseases pose a serious threat to global biodiversity. However, their ecological impacts are not independent of environmental conditions. For example, the pathogenic fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), which has contributed to population declines and extinctions in many amphibian species, interacts with several environmental factors to influence its hosts, but potential interactions with other pathogens and environmental contaminants are understudied. We examined the combined effects of Bd, a water mold (Achlya sp.), and the herbicide Roundup® Regular (hereafter, Roundup®) on larval Pacific treefrog Hyliola regilla hosts. We employed a 2 wk, fully factorial laboratory experiment with 3 ecologically realistic levels (0, 1, and 2 mg l-1 of active ingredient) of field-formulated Roundup®, 2 Achlya treatments (present and absent), and 2 Bd treatments (present and absent). Our results were consistent with sublethal interactive effects involving all 3 experimental factors. When Roundup® was absent, the proportion of Bd-exposed larvae infected with Bd was elevated in the presence of Achlya, consistent with Achlya acting as a synergistic cofactor that facilitated the establishment of Bd infection. However, this Achlya effect became nonsignificant at 1 mg l-1 of the active ingredient of Roundup® and disappeared at the highest Roundup® concentration. In addition, Roundup® decreased Bd loads among Bd-exposed larvae. Our study suggests complex interactive effects of a water mold and a contaminant on Bd infection in amphibian hosts. Achlya and Roundup® were both correlated with altered patterns of Bd infection, but in different ways, and Roundup® appeared to remove the influence of Achlya on Bd
