Recent CMS results in top and Higgs physics

After the Higgs boson discovery in 2012, the investigation of its properties and compatibility with the standard model predictions is central to the physics program of the LHC experiments. Likewise, the study of the top quark is still relevant at the LHC, more than two decades after its discovery at the Tevatron. Top quarks and Higgs bosons are produced at the LHC on a large scale and share a deep connection based on the large mass of the top quark. Both particles provide an excellent laboratory in which to search for new physics: the measurement of their properties tests the foundations of the standard model; and they feature prominently in a variety of exotic signals. The coupling of the Higgs boson to the top quark, a fundamental standard model parameter, can only be measured directly in processes where the two particles are produced together. The production of a Higgs boson together with one or two top quarks is also sensitive to several exciting new physics effects. A brief overview of the current experimental status of top quark and Higgs boson physics is presented using results from the CMS Collaboration.Comment: Updated version of the Wine & Cheese: Joint Experimental-Theoretical Physics Seminar 'Recent CMS results in top and Higgs physics' given at Fermilab, 20 November 2015. Single top Production at sqrt(s) =7 TeV

The production of single top quarks occurs via three processes: t-channel, s-channel and tW associated production. The LHC experiments have observed single top production via t-channel at 7 TeV and measured its cross section, providing a measurement of |Vtb| with an uncertainty at the 10% level. Studies are in place to observe tW associated production with a sensitivity close to 3sigma and the first limits on the production cross section for s-channel are set. Other studies based on single top topologies, like flavor changing neutral currents (FCNC) are also being performed.Comment: Proceedings from the talk "Single top Production at sqrt(s)=7 TeV presented during the QCD session of the Rencontres de Moriond 2012, 4 page

Discovery Potential for the SM Higgs Boson in the H -> WW* -> 2l2nu channel at LHC

A prospective analysis for the search of the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson with the CMS detector is presented in the context of the early LHC data. The aim is to establish an analysis strategy for inclusive production of the Higgs boson decaying in WW* pairs in the context of the early LHC data. Higgs mass region between 120-200 GeV, in which this signature was proposed as highly sensitive, has been studied. The W decays into lnu are considered, where l stands for e or mu. The final states are characterized by two, opposite-sign, high transverse momentum leptons, missing energy, carried out by the undetected neutrinos, and little jet activity. This study uses Monte Carlo (MC) events with full detector simulation, including limited calibration and alignment precision as expected at the LHC startup. Sets of sequential cuts are applied to each of the three topologies, in order to isolate a signal which exceeds the tt and continuum WW backgrounds. Alternatively, an artificial neural network multi-variate analysis technique is used.Comment: Poster at ICHEP08, Philadelphia, USA, July 2008. 3 pages, 3 eps figure

Soil has been utilized in criminal investigations for some time because of its prevalence and transferability. It is usually the physical characteristics that are studied, however the research carried out here aims to make use of the chemical profile of soil samples. The research we are presenting in this work used sieved (2mm) soil samples taken from the top soil layer (about 10cm) that were then analysed using mid infrared spectroscopy. The spectra obtained were pre-treated and then input into two chemometric classification tools: Nonlinear iterative partial least squares followed by linear discriminant analysis (NIPALS-LDA) and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). The models produced show that it is possible to discriminate between soil samples from different land use types and both approaches are comparable in performance. NIPALS-LDA performs much better than PLS-DA in classifying samples to locatio

    Through the labyrinth

After many turns, I made my way through. Making connections between different paths, paths I thought I had forgotten, abandoned, discarded. My goal is to understand how the environment around us affects our emotional state, our behaviour, our mental health. I seek a destigmatized idea of mental health, a way to show that it is a factor of everybody’s health meant to be prioritized as much as physical health, to expose the burden of frivolousness that it carries. I seek ways to burst the bubble that mental health lives in the world of design, to show that mental health should be as integrated in all designs as much as ergonomics and sustainability. I seek to integrate areas of design and psychology. Through product experience and cognitive behavioural sciences, I explore areas of play, nostalgia, aesthetics, functionality, human-centered design and everyday objects as well as neuroscience, depression, anxiety, stress, frustration and overwhelm. I take different twists and turns both in research and design which lead me to the Labyrinth. The Labyrinth proposes to be a new typology of everyday products meant to fit our everyday activities and emotional states. As every object, it serves multiple functions, some obvious and some not. It serves as a way to externalize and objectify our personal Overwhelms. It becomes our companion and a helping hand as we try to balance our time. It concretizes our everyday accomplishments. It shows us we are not alone and we are all just trying to make our way through the labyrinth

The forensic analysis of soil by FTIR with multivariate analysis

Over the past few years more and more studies have been carried out in an attempt to utilize chemical profiles of soil using a wide variety of analytical methods. The value of soil as evidence rests with its prevalence at crime scenes and its transferability between the scene and the criminal. This can be of value for comparison if the scene of crime is known, but could also be so in the identification of a scene. The main basis for the comparison of sites to determine provenance is that soils vary from one place to another. The aim of this work is to find simple methods to identify soil provenance based on FTIR and multivariate analysi

Design of a virtual sensor data array for the analysis of RDX, HMX and DMNB using metal-doped screen printed electrodes and chemometric analysis

The detection of explosive substances is a subject of high importance in several areas including environmental health, de-mining efforts (land and sea) and security and defence against terrorist activity. The use of electrochemical methods for the detection of these substances has increased in recent years but still is quite restricted to the most common explosives. The electrochemical detection of explosive nitroamines and taggant substances in solution using a virtual sensor array of metal-doped screen printed electrodes and differential pulse voltammetry was achieved. The multiple sets of voltammetric data from the different electrodic systems using Differential Pulse Voltammetry (DPV) were integrated using multivariate analysis (PCA, NIPALS and LDA) and matched with known substances present in explosives. These combinations created a mathematical array which separated the explosives, even if the electrochemical information is buried or mixed with the background noise. Two explosive substances: octogen (HMX- 1,3,5-Trinitroperhydro-1,3,5-triazine) and cyclonite (RDX- Hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine) and a taggant agent 2,3-dimethyl-2,3-dinitrobutane (DMNB) were subjected to electrochemical analysis using a solid carbon- based screen printed electrode modified with silver, gold and platinum in aqueous solutions.
