    Chasing the white whale: Capturing the relation between parent educational involvement and student socioemotional difficulties over time

    Early childhood socioemotional difficulties are of increasing concern due to their impact on later functioning, particularly in the academic environment. A large body of research highlights the relation between parent educational involvement and student academic success, such that more involvement is associated with better grades, retention, and graduation. It is praised as a protective factor for those students at risk for poor outcomes. An under-researched area of the parent educational involvement literature is the construct’s relation to student socioemotional functioning, which also affects success in the academic environment and predicts long term functioning. This study seeks to longitudinally investigate these associations, evaluating parent educational involvement as a predictor of later child socioemotional difficulties, and socioemotional difficulties as a predictor of later parent educational involvement. Participants were low-income, predominantly Latinx preschoolers (n =69) and their primary caregivers. Regression analyses revealed a significant negative association between baseline home-school conferencing and later child difficulties (ß = -.20, p \u3c.05), after controlling for child age and gender, and initial socioemotional functioning. Additionally, child socioemotional difficulties predicted later home-based involvement (ß = .23, p \u3c.05), after controlling for initial levels of parent educational involvement and marital status. Results suggest promoting positive home-school communication may curb later socioemotional concerns. In addition, findings highlight child functioning influences parent educational involvement, and socioemotional problems may act as an invitation for parents to increase their educational involvement at home. Cultural considerations and the implications for research and policy are discussed

    The Need for Performance Standards in Preschools: Stealing Shamelessly from Comprehensive School Mental Health Literature

    Young children are at-risk for developing significant mental health difficulties just as their older, school-aged peers. Preschool settings have increasingly attempted to proactively address early childhood socioemotional needs by expanding their prevention and intervention activities. A number of emerging best practices in promoting early childhood mental health have been proposed. However, there are no comprehensive performance standards for preschool mental health and limited guidance on how preschools can align themselves with best practices. This expansion in service scope parallels the development of Comprehensive School Mental Health Systems in K-12 schools. Resources and tools developed for K-12 educational settings may serve as a useful example for preschool mental health systems interested in quality comprehensive mental health care. This conceptual article will describe the prevalence of mental health difficulties in young children, review the current guidance on supporting mental health in young children, and provide support for adapting widely used K-12 school mental health performance standards to establish comprehensive standards for organizing and implementing high quality care systems in preschool settings

    Hubble Space Telescope survey of the Perseus Cluster -III: The effect of local environment on dwarf galaxies

    We present the results of a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) study of dwarf galaxies in the outer regions of the nearby rich Perseus Cluster, down to M_V = -12, and compare these with the dwarf population in the cluster core from our previous HST imaging. In this paper we examine how properties such as the colour magnitude relation, structure and morphology are affected by environment for the lowest mass galaxies. Dwarf galaxies are excellent tracers of the effects of environment due to their low masses, allowing us to derive their environmentally based evolution, which is more subtle in more massive galaxies. We identify 11 dwarf elliptical (dE) and dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies in the outer regions of Perseus, all of which are previously unstudied. We measure the (V-I)_0 colours of our newly discovered dEs, and find that these dwarfs lie on the same red sequence as those in the cluster core. The morphologies of these dwarfs are examined by quantifying their light distributions using CAS parameters, and we find that dEs in the cluster outskirts are on average more disturbed than those in the core, with =0.13\pm0.09 and =0.18\pm0.08, compared to =0.02\pm0.04, =0.01\pm0.07 for those in the core. Based on these results, we infer that these objects are ``transition dwarfs'', likely in the process of transforming from late-type to early type galaxies as they infall into the cluster, with their colours transforming before their structures. When we compare the number counts for both the core and outer regions of the cluster, we find that below M_V = -12, the counts in the outer regions of the cluster exceed those in the core. This is evidence that in the very dense region of the cluster, dwarfs are unable to survive unless they are sufficiently massive to prevent their disruption by the cluster potential and interactions with other galaxies.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures.
