Towards a strong-coupling theory of QCD at finite density
We apply strong-coupling perturbation theory to the QCD lattice Hamiltonian.
We begin with naive, nearest-neighbor fermions and subsequently break the
doubling symmetry with next-nearest-neighbor terms. The effective Hamiltonian
is that of an antiferromagnet with an added kinetic term for baryonic
"impurities," reminiscent of the t-J model of high-T_c superconductivity. As a
first step, we fix the locations of the baryons and make them static. Following
analyses of the t-J model, we apply large-N methods to obtain a phase diagram
in the (N_c,N_f) plane at zero temperature and baryon density. Next we study a
simplified U(3) toy model, in which we add baryons to the vacuum. We use a
coherent state formalism to write a path integral which we analyze with mean
field theory, obtaining a phase diagram in the (n_B,T) plane.Comment: Lattice2002(nonzerot) - Parallel talk and poster presented at Lattice

The Northern Anchovy reduction fishery for the 1978-79 through 1981-82 seasons
Nearly 49,000 metric tons (MT) of anchovies were taken during the 1978-79 season, followed by 32,390 MT in 1979-80, 60,678 MT in 1980-81 and 45,150 MT in 1981-82. A total of 14,076 fish was sampled during the four seasons for age,
length and sex. The fishery during the four seasons consisted mainly of young-of-the-year and age groups I and II fish. The 1978 and 1979 yr classes comprised the major
share of the catch. Seasonal mean lengths varied from 112 mm standard length (SL) in the 1979-80 season to 122 mm SL for the 1981-82 season. Female to male sex ratios ranged from 1.17:l (1978-79 season) to 1.59:l (1979-80 season). (28pp.
Southern California fisheries monitoring summary for 1993 and 1994
The southern California Monitoring and Management Units collectively gathered 803 discrete samples of 7,329 marine finfishes and invertebrates from local commercial fish
markets or authorized fish transporters in 1993. Nineteen different species were sampled and biological information recorded for future summarization and use in formulating fisheries management strategies and decisions. Increased sampling efforts in 1994 resulted in 801 samples of 14,566 marine finfish and invertebrates representing 44 different species. Fisheries trends and threats to local fishing opportunities were identified. Results of Marine Recreational Fishery Statistics Survey interviews were also incorporated for a more complete overview of species targeted by both the sport and commercial industries. (26pp.
Quantum Spin Formulation of the Principal Chiral Model
We formulate the two-dimensional principal chiral model as a quantum spin
model, replacing the classical fields by quantum operators acting in a Hilbert
space, and introducing an additional, Euclidean time dimension. Using coherent
state path integral techniques, we show that in the limit in which a large
representation is chosen for the operators, the low energy excitations of the
model describe a principal chiral model in three dimensions. By dimensional
reduction, the two-dimensional principal chiral model of classical fields is
recovered.Comment: 3pages, LATTICE9
Understanding the fidelity effect when evaluating games with children
There have been a number of studies that have compared evaluation results from prototypes of different fidelities but very few of these are with children. This paper reports a comparative study of three prototypes ranging from low fidelity to high fidelity within the context of mobile games, using a between subject design with 37 participants aged 7 to 9. The children played a matching game on either an iPad, a paper prototype using screen shots of the actual game or a sketched version. Observational data was captured to establish the usability problems, and two tools from the Fun Toolkit were used to measure user experience. The results showed that there was little difference for user experience between the three prototypes and very few usability problems were unique to a specific prototype. The contribution of this paper is that children using low-fidelity prototypes can effectively evaluate games of this genre and style
Ground State Entropy of the Potts Antiferromagnet on Cyclic Strip Graphs
We present exact calculations of the zero-temperature partition function
(chromatic polynomial) and the (exponent of the) ground-state entropy for
the -state Potts antiferromagnet on families of cyclic and twisted cyclic
(M\"obius) strip graphs composed of -sided polygons. Our results suggest a
general rule concerning the maximal region in the complex plane to which
one can analytically continue from the physical interval where . The
chromatic zeros and their accumulation set exhibit the rather
unusual property of including support for and provide further
evidence for a relevant conjecture.Comment: 7 pages, Latex, 4 figs., J. Phys. A Lett., in pres
