Search for, and study of, paleozoic impact ejecta: Progress made during the past year
Nodule-like objects which the author believes to be impact bombs had been found in Middle Ordovician rocks of southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. In northern Illinois, rock fragments containing oolith-like spherules, which the author believes to be solidified impact droplets, and numerous large bubble-holes, had been found at the same stratigraphic level. The discovery of bomb-like nodules in Lower Ordovician rocks of southeastern Wisconsin was reported. Bomb-type nodules associated with droplet-type spherules have been found in Lower Ordovician rocks of central Pennsylvania. These discoveries, in the authors opinion, suffice to show that impact ejecta are widespread in marine sediments of Ordovician age and are likely to be widespread also in marine sediments of other ages. Unfortunately, according to the author, there is little indication so far that this evidence has been accepted as valid by the concerned scientific community
Physical Properities of Ellis County Adobe
Houses made of soil have been built for centuries, but until recently the trend had been away from soil to some other building material . Now, however, adobe is again beginning to be recognized as a satisfactory, reliable building material for our time . Recently, especially in the southwestern part of the United States, a surprising number of dwellers have turned again to earth for their building material. They are following in the footsteps of the early settlers, who constructed many missions and other buildings from sun-dried earth. Many of these buildings, although aged, are still in use or may be viewed as historical landmarks . The adobe building s constructed today range from small houses to impressive theological structures, one of the largest being the Cristo Rey Church in Santa Fe, New Mexico . Thus it is adobe, the oldest of building materials, that is becoming an active candidate for wide use in the house of tomorrow. Since little work has been carried out in this part of the country on the use of modern adobe for building construction and since it is desirable to know the strength of any material used for constructional purposes, the following problem was thought worthy of investigation: To determine the physical properties of Ellis County, Kansas, adobe

Some factors influencing the germination of corn : a thesis
Presented for the degree of Master of Science in AgricultureTypescriptM.S. University of Missouri 1908One line of agricultural investigation that has been much neglected is that of determining what factors may influence the germination of corn. There has been in fact no direct work done along this line that is available in published form. It is, nevertheless, a very important problem and deserves more attention than it has received. With this view in mind some experiments were undertaken during the fall and winter of 1907-08 for the purpose of getting more definite information on the subject

Experimental investigations into high-altitude relight of a gas turbine
This thesis describes experiments to investigate high-altitude relight of a lean direct injection (LDI) combustor. The features that make LDI technology less polluting in terms of NOx compared to conventional combustors are expected to impede relight performance. Therefore an improved understanding of ignition behaviour is required to ensure that stringent relight requirements can be satisfied. Realistic operating conditions are simulated in a ground-based test facility. The application of laser diagnostics presents particular difficulties due to the large quantities of
liquid fuel that impinge on the combustor walls during relight. Advances are made in the application of planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) to monitor fuel placement in a combustor under these conditions. A novel apparatus is developed to deliver a laser sheet to the combustion chamber while protecting all optical surfaces from contamination. The PLIF images are compared with the cold flow field obtained from CFD modelling. These results indicate that fuel becomes trapped inside the central recirculation zone in high
concentrations. High-speed flame imaging performed simultaneously with the PLIF measurements provides important insights into the motion and breakup of flame during relight. An algorithm developed to track the flame activity reveals that the initial spark kernel is convected downstream, before breaking apart and moving upstream towards a recovery origin close to the fuel injector. Analysis of many ignition events has revealed several distinct modes of ignition failure

Criminal Lawyer. By Arthur Lewis Wood
In Criminal Lawyer, Professor Wood, a sociologist, examines the characteristics and attitudes of criminal lawyers in the perspective of the social system in which they function (p. 15), and his finding show the extent to which criminal lawyers are themselves victims rather than the artificers of the maladministration of criminal justice. His method is to compare an ideal type, i.e., how criminal justice is supposed to function, with a picture of reality which emerges when lawyers speak for themselves
Respecting Boundaries: Theoretical Equivalence and Structure Beyond Dynamics
A standard line in the contemporary philosophical literature has it that
physical theories are equivalent only when they agree on their empirical
content, where this empirical content is often understood as being encoded in
the equations of motion of those theories. In this article, we question whether
it is indeed the case that the empirical content of a theory is exhausted by
its equations of motion, showing that (for example) considerations of boundary
conditions play a key role in the empirical equivalence (or otherwise) of
theories. Having argued for this, we show that philosophical claims made by
Knox (2011) that general relativity is equivalent to teleparallel gravity, and
by Weatherall (2016) that electromagnetism in the Faraday tensor formalism is
equivalent to electromagnetism in the vector potential formalism, can both be
called into question. We then show that properly considering the role of
boundary conditions in theory structure can potentially restore these claims of
equivalence and close with some remarks on the pragmatics of adjudications on
theory identity.Comment: preprint. fixed typo
The Non-Relativistic Geometric Trinity of Gravity
We complete a non-relativistic geometric trinity of gravity, by (a) taking
the non-relativistic limit of the well-known geometric trinity of gravity, and
(b) converting the curvature degrees of freedom of Newton-Cartan theory to
purely non-metric degrees of freedom.Comment: v2 minor formatting/typo correction
