Review of Sanumá Memories: Yanomami Ethnography in a Time of Crisis. Alcida Rita Ramos. Madison: University of Wisconsin Press, 1995. xx, 346 pp. (paper).

As I have done considerable research among the Yanomamö,1 it was with anticipation that I received notice of Alcida Ramos\u27 publication of Sanumá Memories. This work is a useful contribution to the large and still expanding research on the Yanomamö, an Amazonian people who have become a classic case study for anthropology and the social sciences. They are probably the most widely read about tribal people in the world, largely a consequence of Napoleon Chagnon\u27s immensely popular ethnography Yanomamö: The Fierce People (first published in 1968 and the most recent edition in 1992). The Yanomamö have become a focal point for theoretical debates concerning the causes of warfare among tribal people, the promise of evolutionary biological theory in the behavioral sciences, and most recently, and lamentably, they are internationally known as victims of grave human rights violations. Ramos\u27 Sanumá Memories was first published in Portuguese in 1990 as an update of her 1972 doctoral dissertation (The Social System of the Sanumá of Northern Brazil, University of Wisconsin) supplemented by several return visits to the Sanumá (as recently as 1992) yielding additional chapters. A number of the chapters have been published as journal articles in both Portuguese and English. Based on the work of Ernesto Migliazza, the Yanomamö are divided into four ethnolinguistic groups: the Sanumá or Sanema with 3,200 speakers in about 100 villages, threequarters of which are in Venezuela; the Yanomamö with 11,700 speakers in 171 villages, with about 80 percent in Venezuela; Yanomam with 5,300 speakers in 64 villages, nearly all of which are in Brazil; and the Ninam (or Yanam), with perhaps as many as 850 speakers equally divided in Brazil and Venezuela. The work under review here is the most systematic account of we have on Sanumá social organization. Other major works on the Sanumá by Kent Taylor and Marcus Colchester focus on ethnobiology, ecology, and economics

Volatility of primary commodity prices: some evidence from agricultural exports in Sub-Saharan Africa.

This paper utilizes three univariate ARCH-type models to empirically examine persistence and asymmetry in volatility of prices of primary agricultural commodities produced in Sub-Sahara Africa. Maximum likelihood estimation results of the three models ranked the GARCH version as the best statistical fit, lending support for hypotheses of persistence, symmetry and variability in volatility. This pattern of volatility could effectively jeopardize the success of traditional commodity price risk management policies used in this region. Policymakers should appreciate potential benefits associated with market-based strategies for managing commodity exposure of these countries.GARCH; TGARCH; EGARCH; price volatility; agricultural commodities; Sub-Saharan Africa.

Extraction of vocal-tract system characteristics from speechsignals

We propose methods to track natural variations in the characteristics of the vocal-tract system from speech signals. We are especially interested in the cases where these characteristics vary over time, as happens in dynamic sounds such as consonant-vowel transitions. We show that the selection of appropriate analysis segments is crucial in these methods, and we propose a selection based on estimated instants of significant excitation. These instants are obtained by a method based on the average group-delay property of minimum-phase signals. In voiced speech, they correspond to the instants of glottal closure. The vocal-tract system is characterized by its formant parameters, which are extracted from the analysis segments. Because the segments are always at the same relative position in each pitch period, in voiced speech the extracted formants are consistent across successive pitch periods. We demonstrate the results of the analysis for several difficult cases of speech signals

On some properties of the water-vapor spectrum and their relations to atmospheric radiation

In the present paper we investigate the physical consequences of the fact that the water vapor spectrum in the far infrared consists of a large number of narrow lines. It will be shown that the average width of these lines is much smaller than the intervals which could be resolved with the spectrographs used hitherto. For thick layer of vapor complete absorption is nevertheless reached in most parts of the spectrum. It can be shown that under such circumstances the total absorption is approximately proportional to the air pressure in the absorbing layers and is inversely proportional to the square root of the absolute temperature. There is an additional variation with temperature of a more complex type which cannot yet be quantitatively evaluated from the available measurements, but it is probably not very large

Low energy spin fluctuations in the heavy fermion compound Ce0.925_{0.925}La0.075_{0.075}Ru2_{2}Si2_{2}

We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements performed on a single crystal of the heavy fermion compound Ce$_{0.925}$La$_{0.075}$Ru$_{2}$Si$_{2}$, which is at the borderline between an antiferromagnetically ordered and a paramagnetic ground state. Intensity maps as a function of wavevector and energy ($0.1<E<1.2$ meV) were obtained at temperatures $T=0.1$ and 2 K, using the time-of-flight spectrometer IRIS. An unexpected saturation of the relaxation rate and static susceptibility of the spin fluctuations is found at low temperatures.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures, SCES'04 Proceeding

Taylorism, targets, technology and teams - compatible concepts? Evidence from a US call centre

Taylorism, targets and technology form a potent mix in call centres where groups of individuals are asked to perform as “teams”. In this paper we explore how ‘task’ oriented concepts interact with the ‘interpersonal relationship’ realm in an environment where group life dominates the notional foundation of a call centre’s organisational structure. Tuckman’s four stage model of sequential group development serves as the theoretical lens through which the role ‘teams’ play in the working environment of a large call centre is examined.Our analysis of structured interviews conducted in an outbound, financial services call centre in the southern United States reveals the mechanisms by which agents have interpreted their ‘team charter’ to focus on individual achievement of increased remuneration levels. The interplay between these variables indicate that reward mechanisms associated with simple Taylorist targets, imposed on the entry level call centre agents, mitigate against meaningful group development. The advancement through promotion based on individual performance to more challenging, less target based work, is in sharp contrast to their initial training period where ‘team building’ is an essential ingredient of skills acquisition
