Homelessness and Vulnerable Young People: A social audit of KeyChange Charitys supported accommodation
Homelessness is still an ever-present problem in many towns and cities in the UK today. This paper is part of a more in-depth study of homelessness and social exclusion. It presents the results of a small-scale study, which illustrates the range of problems experienced by homeless young women and those running hostels for them. The study was carried out for KeyChange at their two hostels in Reigate and Exeter. It evaluates the quality of their women's hostel provision, the types of women they help, and the ways in which these women are helped by their time with KeyChange. It identifies a number of factors contributing to the quality of KeyChange's provision and points to areas for consideration where improvements could be made.Homelessness, young women, social exclusion
SESAR: The Past, Present, and Future of European Air Traffic Management Research
The Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) project is the technological pillar of the European Commissionâs Single European Sky Initiative to modernize air traffic management (ATM). Here, we describe the process of establishing SESAR and the main parts of the project: the research and development (R&D) part, which is led by the SESAR Joint Undertaking; the deployment part, which is managed by the SESAR Deployment Manager; and the European ATM Master Plan, which collects and lays out both the R&D and deployment needs. The latest European ATM Master Plan was adopted just prior to the current pandemic. The huge loss in air traffic due to the pandemic, and the speed of the recovery of the aviation industry will require reprioritization, but the main elements that have been establishedâparticularly those in support of the environmentâremain valid
Industrial competitiveness of the auto parts industries in four large Asian countries : the role of government policy in a challenging international environment
Rationalization and stabilization following the Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s combined with the expansion and liberalization of regional and global trade to create significant parts industries in China, Indonesia, and the Republic of Korea. Conventional policies of stabilization and liberalization, however, cannot fully explain growth patterns. Japan and Korea grewinto major players before liberalizing trade and investment, while even after extensive liberalization Indonesia has yet to move from extensive to intensive growth. These anomalies suggest that to explain success in the auto parts industry we need to move beyond liberalization to look at policies and institutions promoting economies of scale, skill formation, quality upgrading, supplier-linkage cooperation, and innovation. In Japan, the regional and global leader, innovative assemblers led industrial development and supported key suppliers, but the government also supported diffusion of quality control techniques and new technology to small and medium enterprises, and encouraged stable employment among core employees. Korea remains weaker on both small and medium enterprise and employment fronts, but government-encouraged consolidation around a small number of business groups, an extended period of protection, and support for export promotion led to economies of scale. Liberalization of foreign investment after the financial crisis helped ameliorate the excessive statism of earlier policies and strengthened the parts industry. In China, liberalization for WTO entry, rapid expansion in demand, and strong support by local governments encouraged a wave of foreign investment in both assembly and parts. Movement Literacy: Creating a Healing Encounter in Physical Education
Modern Physical Education (PE) administered systemic models of teaching crafts. It
atrophied the play element in human nature, and shaped a single-lens attitude to the
treatment of bodies. Framing minds, it veiled the conditions of learning processes and
thus âinstitutedâ the sovereignty of subjective concerns. It created many unexplained
âgapsâ between abstract concerns and pragmatic issues.
Following languageâs poststructural analysis, PEâs professional communication
practices were exposed to alternative methodological refocusing from conforming to
move to personalise the agentâs experience in moving to learn.
In the wake of poststructuralism came Whiteheadâs Physical Literacy (PL) which I adopt
as âleitmotifâ to reform PEâs teacher preparation and schooling practices. PL addresses
children up to 14 years. For older pupils, PLâs language needs to constitute versions of
human purposes voiced by the introduction of a new development called âMovement
Literacyâ (ML). ML acknowledges that language and movement are very different forms
of âself-expressionâ. By itself however, self-expression is inadequate when it comes to
learning how to learn. Critical dialogue needs to be brought in to facilitate meaningful
innovation in the PE world. By employing the philosophies of phenomenology and
hermeneutics I make a case that expression in languaging movement [subjecting the
agentâs account to hermeneutic treatment] is expression for others, and in exchange
with others the expression is redefined, and changes the way one sees and talks about
movement and about oneself.
In its reflective practice, reverentially, ML will also unpack pedagogyâs hidden protocol,
hoping to reclaim PEâs authentic purpose. It connects secular matters with sacred
implications by reconciling the polemic differences between âtechneâ [purpose] and
âphronesis â [prudence]. With limited reference to Eastern âselflessnessâ ML advances
teaching, through pedagogy and andragogy as a life-time mission. Not providing
answers, the thesis offers a manifesto attempting to facilitate new questions such as:
how can language and movement communicate? and how can movement educators
âministerâ to their learnerâs sense of well-being
Fighting Irrelevance: An economic community 'with ASEAN characteristics'
Contrary to expectations at the time, the financial crises of 1997-98 may have strengthened ASEAN. The backlash against a perceived unsympathetic Western response put ASEAN at center stage in new regional cooperative arrangements. Moreover, the rivalry between China and Japan for regional leadership has led them both to seek to negotiate regional partnerships with ASEAN as a whole. ASEAN, however, faces new challenges - particularly from rapid economic growth in China and India, and from the proliferation of preferential trade agreements (PTAs). ASEAN has made only slow progress in economic cooperation, which has fallen further behind schedule. The private sector makes little use of ASEAN's preferential arrangements because they afford little advantage over most-favored-nation tariffs. ASEAN has failed to address 'deeper integration' issues - the removal of 'beyond border' barriers to trade. Some of the bilateral PTAs that ASEAN countries have negotiated with extra-regional partners go further in removing barriers than ASEAN's own arrangements. ASEAN members continue to eschew binding commitments. Liberalization under ASEAN's auspices has not been sufficiently significant to encourage business groups to invest substantial resources in lobbying for deeper integration
"It takes a man to put me on the bottom": gay men's experiences of masculinity and anal intercourse
In anal intercourse between gay men, men who are typically insertive (âtopsâ) are often perceived as, and may identify as, more masculine than those who are typically receptive (âbottomsâ). âVersatileâ men, who may adopt either position, may be perceived as more gender-balanced and may transcend the gender-role stereotypes associated with self-labelling as top or bottom. The aim of this study was to explore how gay menâs beliefs about masculinity were associated with their beliefs about the gendered nature of sexual self-labels, and their behavior in anal intercourse. Individual semi-structured interviews were undertaken with 17, UK-based gay men. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis identified that perceptions of tops and bottoms as gendered social identities varied depending on the extent to which gay men subscribed to the mandates of âhegemonic masculinityâ, the dominant masculinity in Western society. The findings also suggested that some gay men differentiated between top and bottom as social identities and topping and bottoming as gendered behaviors. This had implications for gay menâs behaviors in anal intercourse. It is suggested that future efforts to engage with gay men about their sexual behavior should account for their beliefs regarding the gender role stereotypes associated with gay sexual self-labels
'Thereâs too many gay categories now': discursive constructions of gay masculinity
âMasculine capitalâ refers to the social power afforded by the display of traits and behaviors that are associated with orthodox, stereotypical masculinity. Men who are concerned with their masculine identity may utilize these traits and behaviors to increase their overall masculine capital, and to mitigate âfailuresâ in other domains of masculinity. However, their success at accruing and trading masculine capital may be limited, because different traits and behaviors are not equal in the capital they convey, and their value may vary depending on the social context in which they are deployed. Research suggests that heterosexuality contributes more to masculine capital than other stereotypically masculine characteristics: The possibilities for gay men to accrue and trade masculine capital may therefore be particularly limited, especially in heteronormative contexts. Focus groups were undertaken with gay men, straight women and straight men living in a coastal city in the south of England to explore discursive constructions of gay masculinity, and to examine gay menâs possibilities for accruing and trading masculine capital. Discourse analysis identified constructions of gay masculinity in reference to hegemonic masculinity, where gay men may acquire masculine capital in similar ways to straight men. However, the meaning and value of this capital may also vary, because certain characteristics and behaviors may have different value for and between gay men than they do for straight men, and in heteronormative contexts. The analysis also identified discourses of gay masculinity where it was not constructed as a singular entity, but rather as complex, multiple and diverse
"I don't want to be seen as a screaming queen": an interpretative phenomenological analysis of gay men's masculine identities
It has been argued that gay men who live in Western societies must negotiate masculine identities against a cultural backdrop where the most desirable and locally hegemonic masculinity is heterosexual. However, contemporary masculinity theories conceptualize masculinities as increasingly inclusive of gay men. The purpose of this study was to use a discourse-dynamic approach to studying masculine subjectivity to identify how gay men in England and Wales negotiated masculinity discourses to construct their masculine identities. One-to-one, semi-structured interviews were undertaken with six younger gay men aged 20 to 24, and 11 older gay men aged 30 to 42. Participants were asked to describe their subjective experiences of masculinity. The results of an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis indicated that discourses of hegemonic and alternative masculinities had implications for lived experiences of masculinity. Older participants in particular emphasized their attributes they associated with masculine dominance, including anti-effeminacy attitudes. The majority of younger participants did not feel masculine. Irrespective of age, many participants resisted hegemonic masculinity by highlighting the value of âgaynessâ at times. The findings suggested that hegemonic masculinity was the most readily available discourse for conceptualizing masculinity, but that lived experiences of masculinity were not necessarily located within this discourse
