    Devil's staircase phase diagram of the fractional quantum Hall effect in the thin-torus limit

    After more than three decades the fractional quantum Hall effect still poses challenges to contemporary physics. Recent experiments point toward a fractal scenario for the Hall resistivity as a function of the magnetic field. Here, we consider the so-called thin-torus limit of the Hamiltonian describing interacting electrons in a strong magnetic field, restricted to the lowest Landau level, and we show that it can be mapped onto a one-dimensional lattice gas with repulsive interactions, with the magnetic field playing the role of a chemical potential. The statistical mechanics of such models leads to interpret the sequence of Hall plateaux as a fractal phase diagram, whose landscape shows a qualitative agreement with experiments.Comment: 5 pages main text, 11 pages supplementary, 2 figure

    A posteriori error estimates for the monodomain model in cardiac electrophysiology

    We consider the monodomain model, a system of a parabolic semilinear reaction-diffusion equation coupled with a nonlinear ordinary differential equation, arising from the (simplified) mathematical description of the electrical activity of the heart. We derive a posteriori error estimators accounting for different sources of error (space/time discretization and linearization). We prove reliability and efficiency (this latter under a suitable assumption) of the error indicators. Finally, numerical experiments assess the validity of the theoretical results

    Are there hadronic bound states above the QCD transition temperature?

    Recent lattice QCD calculations, at physical pion masses and small lattice spacings that approach the continuum limit, have revealed that non-diagonal quark correlators above the critical temperature are finite up to about 2 TcT_c. Since the transition from hadronic to free partonic degrees of freedom is merely an analytic cross-over, it is likely that, in the temperature regime between 1-2 TcT_c, quark and gluon quasiparticles and pre-hadronic bound states can coexist. The correlator values, in comparison to PNJL model calculations beyond mean-field, indicate that at least part of the mixed phase resides in color-neutral bound states. A similar effect was postulated for the in-medium fragmentation process, i.e. for partons which do not thermalize with the system and thus constitute the non-equilibrium component of the particle emission spectrum from a deconfined plasma phase. Here, for the first time we investigate the likelihood of forming bound states also in the equilibrated, parton dominated phase above TcT_c which is described by lattice QCD.Comment: 15 pages, 4 Figure

    Taxi-aware map: identifying and predicting vacant taxis in the city

    Knowing where vacant taxis are and will be at a given time and location helps the users in daily planning and scheduling, as well as the taxi service providers in dispatching. In this paper, we present a predictive model for the number of vacant taxis in a given area based on time of the day, day of the week, and weather condition. The history is used to build the prior probability distributions for our inference engine, which is based on the naĂŻve Bayesian classifier with developed error-based learning algorithm and method for detecting adequacy of historical data using mutual information. Based on 150 taxis in Lisbon, Portugal, we are able to predict for each hour with the overall error rate of 0.8 taxis per sq. km

    The comments by Spada et al. (which are similar in style and content to the ones already made by the authors on the Italian Ministry of Health Web site) are based on misunderstandings and manipulations. The essence of systematic reviews is to sum up available knowledge and minimize bias. The latter is done by a priori stating study inclusion criteria both in the protocol and in the full HTA report (see Fig. 1, p. 299) and assessing methodological quality of included studies using an instrument which was specified in the protocol text and never changed (the Quality Assessment Diagnostic Accuracy Studies checklist or QUADAS). The purpose of inclusion criteria and bias minimization efforts is to ensure that what is included in a review is both relevant and contributes evidence weighted by its reliability to answer the study question (in our case the diagnostic performance of WCE in the small bowel). The high number of excluded studies is thus irrelevant, although it is a common feature of systematic reviews. What matters is what the included studies tell us

    Deep Neural Networks for Inverse Problems with Pseudodifferential Operators : An Application to Limited-Angle Tomography

    We propose a novel convolutional neural network (CNN), called Psi DONet, designed for learning pseudodifferential operators (Psi DOs) in the context of linear inverse problems. Our starting point is the iterative soft thresholding algorithm (ISTA), a well-known algorithm to solve sparsity-promoting minimization problems. We show that, under rather general assumptions on the forward operator, the unfolded iterations of ISTA can be interpreted as the successive layers of a CNN, which in turn provides fairly general network architectures that, for a specific choice of the parameters involved, allow us to reproduce ISTA, or a perturbation of ISTA for which we can bound the coefficients of the filters. Our case study is the limited-angle X-ray transform and its application to limited-angle computed tomography (LA-CT). In particular, we prove that, in the case of LA-CT, the operations of upscaling, downscaling, and convolution, which characterize our Psi DONet and most deep learning schemes, can be exactly determined by combining the convolutional nature of the limited-angle X-ray transform and basic properties defining an orthogonal wavelet system. We test two different implementations of Psi DONet on simulated data from limited-angle geometry, generated from the ellipse data set. Both implementations provide equally good and noteworthy preliminary results, showing the potential of the approach we propose and paving the way to applying the same idea to other convolutional operators which are Psi DOs or Fourier integral operators.Peer reviewe

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>CDK5R1 </it>plays a central role in neuronal migration and differentiation during central nervous system development. <it>CDK5R1 </it>has been implicated in neurodegenerative disorders and proposed as a candidate gene for mental retardation. The remarkable size of <it>CDK5R1 </it>3'-untranslated region (3'-UTR) suggests a role in post-transcriptional regulation of <it>CDK5R1 </it>expression.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The bioinformatic study shows a high conservation degree in mammals and predicts several AU-Rich Elements (AREs). The insertion of <it>CDK5R1 </it>3'-UTR into luciferase 3'-UTR causes a decreased luciferase activity in four transfected cell lines. We identified 3'-UTR subregions which tend to reduce the reporter gene expression, sometimes in a cell line-dependent manner. In most cases the quantitative analysis of luciferase mRNA suggests that CDK5R1 3'-UTR affects mRNA stability. A region, leading to a very strong mRNA destabilization, showed a significantly low half-life, indicating an accelerated mRNA degradation. The 3' end of the transcript, containing a class I ARE, specifically displays a stabilizing effect in neuroblastoma cell lines. We also observed the interaction of the stabilizing neuronal RNA-binding proteins ELAV with the CDK5R1 transcript in SH-SY5Y cells and identified three 3'-UTR sub-regions showing affinity for ELAV proteins.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our findings evince the presence of both destabilizing and stabilizing regulatory elements in <it>CDK5R1 </it>3'-UTR and support the hypothesis that <it>CDK5R1 </it>gene expression is post-transcriptionally controlled in neurons by ELAV-mediated mechanisms. This is the first evidence of the involvement of 3'-UTR in the modulation of <it>CDK5R1 </it>expression. The fine tuning of <it>CDK5R1 </it>expression by 3'-UTR may have a role in central nervous system development and functioning, with potential implications in neurodegenerative and cognitive disorders.</p

    Quantificazione del calcio coronarico (calcium score) attraverso l'utilizzo di nuove tecniche di imaging e suo ruolo prognostico in vari sottogruppi di pazienti

    Coronary artery disease is the first cause of mortality in industrialized countries notwithstanding the diagnostic and therapeutic progresses. Electron beam computed tomography and multislice computed tomography with calcium score software seem to have an important role in the early diagnosis of coronary artery disease. Coronary calcium is associated with a high probability of subclinical atherosclerosis. In particular the area of calcification has a positive correlation with the histologically analyzed area of the atheromatous burden plaque. The pathophysiological mechanism may be that the calcium adherent to the plaque makes unstable the plaque with possible rupture. Several studies have analyzed the predictive value of calcium score in various subgroups of patients (asymptomatic, with chest pain, with diabetes) and they have confirmed the presence of large calcific deposits in subjects with a high cardiovascular risk. The correlation of the other risk factors with calcium score is unclear and whether this is due to genetic predisposition requires further investigation. © 2003 CEPI Srl
