Experimental evaluation of an advanced Space Shuttle main engine hot-gas manifold design concept
This study, using an extensively modified, full-scale space shuttle main engine (SSME) hot-gas manifold (HGM), established a detailed aerodynamic data base to support development of an advanced, three-dimensional, fluid-dynamic analysis computer model. In addition, the advanced SSME hot-gas manifold design used in this study demonstrated improved flow environment (uniformity) in the fuel side turbine exit and transfer duct exit regions. Major modifications were incorporated in the full-scale HGM flow test article model using two large transfer ducts on the fuel turbine side of the HGM in place of the three small transfer ducts in the present design. Other model features included an increases in the flow areas downstream of the 180-degree turn and in the fishbowl regions

DETERMINANTS OF CHILD HEALTH IN RURAL SOUTH AFRICA
This study examines the correlation between household characteristics—namely household head education, sex of household head, assets, livestock ownership, and field usage—and children\u27s nutritional status, quantified by growth stunting, underweight status, and wasting, in rural South Africa. Children aged 1-5 years old in the Agincourt Health and Demographic Surveillance Site of South Africa were sampled in 2010 and 2011. The proportion of children who were growth stunted was 16% in 2010 and 26% in 2011. In 2010 and 2011, 3% and 6% of the children sampled were underweight, respectively. The percent of children considered to have wasting syndrome was 0.7% in 2010 and 2% in 2011. These data provide evidence supporting previous studies showing that childhood malnutrition is a continuing problem in rural South Africa. Further, childhood undernutrition was correlated with all five household characteristics, but most significantly with household head education, field usage, and assets. Results from this study suggest that investing in education may be an effective tool for reducing childhood undernutrition
Selected aspects of Alzheimer\u27s disease
Alzheimer\u27s disease consists of a progressive atrophy of the brain without a known cause or cure (Gruetzner, 1988; Jarvik, 1987, in Karlicki, 1987; u. s. Congress, Office of Technology Assessment, 1987; Pajk, 1984). This disease affects 50% of the 2-6 million Americans suffering from dementing illnesses (Rabins & Folstein, 1983; Mace & Rabins, 1981). The number of Americans suffering from dementing illnesses could rise to 7.4 million by the year 2000 (U.S. Congress, Office of Technology Assessment, 1987)

Computer Literacy: An Instructional Unit
This instructional unit on computer literacy is intended for use as a 9-week course meeting five days per week for 50-minute class periods. If tied to a 9-week course in keyboarding or combined with additional materials on programming or software applications; it could also be expanded into a semester course. The following topics are covered in the individual chapters: the role of computers in society; ways in which computers affect society (historical development of computers; their effects on quality of life; economic effects of computers; concerns arising from computer use; and rapid technological changes in business); the way in which computers work (system components; binary code; kinds of computers; and differences between hardware and software); procedures for using computers (operation of a computer system; techniques in analyzing and solving a problem through flowcharting; procedures for writing and executing simple programs coded in BASIC; introduction to other languages; and software applications); and career opportunities in areas using computer technology. Each chapter includes some or all of the following: objectives; an outline of the section\u27s general content; teacher and student learning activities; and resources. A list of print and nonprint references concludes the guide. (MN) -- Provided by publishe
Neutrophil extracellular trap-formation following Blastomyces dermatitidis yeast stimulation
Blastomycosis, a potentially fatal infection results from an infection developing from a thermo-dimorphic fungal pathogen Blastomyces dermatitidis. The pivotal points driving the pathogenesis associated with the varied clinical presentations are not understood. The invasive morphotype of Blastomyces dermatitidis, the yeast are large (up to 20μm diameter) making phagocytosis, an internal mechanism used by neutrophils difficult. Neutrophils, predominant immune response cells, also have an extracellular mechanism, Neutrophil Extracellular Trap (NET) formation. Blastomyces dermatitidis yeast express an essential virulence factor, Blastomyces ADhesin factor (BAD1). Neutrophils were stimulated with a wild type B. dermatitidis expressing the virulence factor BAD1+ or with knock out B. dermatitidis BAD- not expressing the virulence factor to determine if BAD1modulates NET-formation. Neutrophil elastase (NE) activity was measured to indirectly quantify NET-formation and a Colony Forming Unit (CFU) assay measured the percent surviving yeast allowing for assessment of the NET’s fungicidal/fungistatic ability. The level of NET-formation and the percent surviving yeast for each yeast strain were compared when neutrophils from different donors were stimulated. The ability of yeast to evade a powerful extracellular mechanism used by the host immune response would allow continued pathogenesis
Reading Achievement of Disabled Learners
This article compares the reading progress of learning disabled children receiving oralographic reading instruction with the progress of disabled learners in current special reading programs in five school districts. The experiment was conducted to measure the validity of the Oralographic Reading Program as an approach that meets distinctive needs of learning disabled children in reading. The results of standardized survey and diagnostic tests, using analysis of covariance procedures, revealed significantly higher performance in reading by the oralographic reading group at the end of the experimental period. Program elements considered to provide the treatment effects include careful provision for general principles of learning as well as planned guidance in the integration and application of developing skills. </jats:p
