    Accuracy of the activation energy calculated from a thermoluminescence glow‐peak using a method that uses three points on the peak

    The utility of thermoluminescence (TL) in detecting changes in defect concentration in insulators is well established [1–3]. The underlying premise leading to the emission of TL is that exposure of a material to ionizing radiation causes a redistribution of charge in defect centres within the material. When the material is heated at a controlled linear rate, the thermoluminescence is emitted as a temperature-dependent set of peaks collectively known as a glow-curve. The shape and intensity of each of the glow-peaks may be characterized by a set of parameters consisting of the activation energy E, the frequency factors, the number of electrons n0 trapped in defect centres at the start of the heating, and the order of kinetics b. The order of kinetics b is an indication of the retrapping probability i.e. the probability that a free electron from the conduction band will be retrapped rather than recombine with a hole at a recombination centre to produce thermoluminescence. Retrapping of electrons reduces the TL intensity at any particular temperature during the heating process. The physical mechanisms of TL associated with a given glow curve are unique and may be characterized by analysis of the glow-curve for the said kinetic parameters

    BIOAVAILABILITY STUDY OF ONDANSETRON GEL IN RABBITS AND HUMAN VOLUNTEERS APPLING UPLC AS ANALYTICAL TOOL AND EVALUATION OF THE ANTIEMETIC EFFECT OF ONDANSETRON GEL IN CISPLATIN-INDUCED EMESIS IN RATS

    Objective: This study was undertaken to determine the bioavailability of ondansetron gel in experimental animals and humans applying UPLC as an analytical tool and evaluation of the antiemetic effect of ondansetron gel in cisplatin-induced emesis in rats. Methods: Ondansetron gel (F13: sodium alginate 7% w/w) was used, marketed I. V. ondansetron (Zofran) ® was chosen as reference. The bioavailability study in rabbits was selected as a parallel design using nine healthy rabbits divided into three groups whereas, bioavailability study in humans was an open-label, wherein 6 healthy subjects administered ondansetron gel. The potential effect of ondansetron gel was evaluated for the prevention of different phases of emesis motivated by exposure to antineoplastic drugs (cisplatin) by determination of body weight loss, water and food intake applying kaolin-pica model in rats using seventy-two rats divided into six groups. Results: Ondansetron gel (0.5%) showed detectable plasma concentration 22.833±2.17 ng/m1 after ¼ h and 419.55±2.17 ng/ml after 1-h post-treatment in rabbits and human respectively and concentration was maintained above-reported minimum effective concentration for more than 2.5 h for rabbits and 7 h for humans compared to 1.75 h after I. V. administration. The ondansetron gel significantly reduces all phases of cisplatin-induced emesis and a decrease in body weight, water, and food consumption was significantly attenuated. Conclusion: Based on the high efficacy of gel on emesis induced by cisplatin, and its high bioavailability, transdermal ondansetron gel could be a promising convenient system to prevent nausea and vomiting following administration of antineoplastic drugs

    The Differential Efficiency of Chlorella vulgaris and Oscillatoria sp. to Treat the Municipal Wastewater

    The utilization of microalgae to treat wastewater becomes an alternative biological wastewater treatment technique worldwide because of its low cost and environmental clean. Chlorella vulgaris and Oscillatoria sp. were cultured in municipal wastewater under controlled laboratory conditions with continuous light illumination and aeration. Physical properties (pH, TDS and Salinity), and nutrient contents (ammonia, nitrite and total phosphorus)were measured in the raw wastewater. Growth rates of the cultured species in terms of optical densities and cell counts, nutrient salts removal efficiencies were measured during the experimental durations after; 24, 48, 72, 96 , 120 and 144hrs. Lipids, proteins and carbohydrates contents were also evaluated after 144hrs. The recorded optical density of Chlorella vulgaris was 0.188±0.01 at 680 nm and 0.17±0.01 at 750 nm after 24hrs then increased to 1.45±0.002 at 680nm and 1.43±0.01 at 750nm at the end of 120hrs, meanwhile the optical density of Oscillatoria sp. was increased from 0.132±0.01 at 680 nm and 0.102±0.01 at 750 nm after 24hrs to 1.054±0.004 at 680 nm and 0.99±0.002 at 750 nm at the end of 120hrs of the experiment. On the other hand, the cell count of Chlorella vulgaris was enriched from 6.8±2.2 cell/ml after 24hrs to 720±120 cell/ml at the end of 120h of the culturing. Overall, efficiencies of nutrients removal were 99.426%, 100% and 82.211% for ammonia, nitrite and total phosphorus respectively at the end of 120hrs of Chlorella vulgaris culturing, while Oscillatoria sp nutrient removal efficiencies recorded 98.125%, 100% and 84.718% for ammonia, Nitrite and total phosphorus respectively. Chlorella vulgaris biomass was estimated 26.66±7.5% lipid 35.1±1.6% protein and 29.34±3.25% carbohydrate, however Oscillatoria sp. biomass was estimated 11.76±0.79% lipids, 32.9±1.92% protein and 27.36±3.78% carbohydrates.     Carbetocin versus Oxytocin and Misoprostol in prevention of atonic post-partum hemorrhage in high risk patients planed for cesarean delivery

    Background: Post-partum hemorrhage prevention (PPH) is considered a major issue due to its effect on maternal morbidity and mortality. The objective of this study was to compare efficacy of Carbetocin in prevention of atonic post-partum hemorrhage in high risk patients undergoing elective caesarean section in comparison to Oxytocin and Misoprostol.Methods: 150 pregnant women prepared for elective caesarean section were classified into 3 groups; Group I (50 patients received Carbetocin 100 mg I.V infusion), Group II (50 patients received 20 IU of Oxytocin infusion on 1000 ml of normal saline solution) and Group III (50 cases received Misoprostol 400 µg per rectum immediately before induction of anaesthesia). Assessment of PPH and its degree was determined according to amount of blood loss during and for first 24 hours of caesarean delivery, also further need for haemostatic measures were also assessed.Results: There was a statistically significant difference in PPH among the three groups 6, 14 and 12% for group I, II and III respectively (P <0.001), major PPH was 0, 4 and 6% for the same groups respectively (P <0.001). The need for additional uterotonic agents was significantly lesser in Group I compared to Group II and III (2% versus 8 and 12% respectively P = 0.02) also the need for additional surgical measures was significantly lesser among the three groups (P= 0.00). The drop in Hb level and haematocrit value was significantly lesser in group I compared to group II& III (P <0.05). The need for blood transfusion was significantly lesser in Group I compared to group II and III (0% versus 12% p <0.0001)Conclusions: Carbetocin was superior to Oxytocin and Misoprostol in prevention of atonic PPH in high risk patients underwent elective caesarean delivery. Carbetocin should be administered for all cases undergoing elective CS and carry a risk factor for postpartum hemorrhage.

    Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate level and knee osteoarthritis in older adults: preliminary data for the possible link

    ABSTRACT Background: Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is believed to be protective against articular cartilage injury and it is widely used as one of the natural remedies for inflammatory and degenerative arthritis. Yet, information about the association between DHEA level and knee OA is lacking. Objectives: To explore the link between serum dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAs) levels and knee OA among elderly patients. Methods: A case control study was conducted on 80 elderly subjects (40 males, 40 females) aged 60 years and older attending the outpatient clinics in Ain Shams University Hospital. Participants underwent a standard clinical examination of the knee, assessment of physical difficulty and pain severity using WOMAC OA index. Weight-bearing anteroposterior radiographs of the knees in the semi-flexed position were performed. Serum levels of DHEAs were examined. Results: The serum level of DHEAs in males with knee OA was 0.29 ± 0.17 μg/mL compared to those without knee OA 0.59 ± 0.51 μg/mL (p=0.006), small but significant difference existed between the serum level of DHEAs in females with knee OA 0.25 ± 0.11 μg/mL compared to those without knee OA 0.39 ± 0.26 μg/mL (p=0.044*). Additionally, the serum DHEAs level negatively correlated with the severity of knee OA in both sexes. Conclusions: There was a sex difference in serum DHEAs level and occurrence of knee OA. Lower levels of DHEAs were reported in elderly with knee OA and the serum DHEAs level negatively correlated with the severity of knee OA
