    The Quest to End Modern Slavery: Metaphors in corporate modern slavery statements

    This paper focuses on the modern slavery statements of three major UK high street retailers who are known for their relatively pro-active approach to the debate on corporate responsibility for ethical trading. Drawing on our earlier research in relation to metaphors in British newspaper reporting of modern slavery and human trafficking since 2000, we explore the metaphors that recur across the statements these companies have published in 2016, 2017 and 2018. These statements were published in accordance with the UK Modern Slavery Act 2015, which requires all commercial organisations operating in the UK, with a turnover greater than GBP 36 million, to publish an annual statement outlining the work done to assess and address (the risk of) modern slavery in their supply chains. We find that the metaphors used in these statements generally fail to acknowledge the agency of those workers affected by modern slavery and labour exploitation in a broader sense, the potential complicity of the retailers in sustaining an exploitative industry, and the underlying socio-economic factors that leave workers vulnerable to exploitation. We conclude that more needs to be done to account for the causes of modern slavery so that retailers can prevent rather than react to it

    A comparative life cycle assessment of process water treatment technologies at the Secunda industrial complex, South Africa

    The increasingly poor quality of South Africafs natural water sources requires industries and power stations to treat raw water extensively prior to industrial use in, for example, boilers. Two different raw water desalination technologies, an existing ion exchange plant and a proposed reverse osmosis intervention, are compared by life cycle assessment for the production of 1 M. of boiler feed water, in the context of the Secunda industrial complex situated in Mpumalanga, South Africa. The proposed reverse osmosis option would perform 22% worse for global warming potential, which relates to the use of coal-derived electricity, but would reduce burdens of the ion exchange option on human toxicity and freshwater aquatic ecotoxicity due to the use of an aluminium sulphate coagulant. Significantly, the assessment predicts the reverse osmosis option to effect a 78% overall reduction in storage of problematic salts, from 599 kg/M. to 133 kg/M.. Notwithstanding the fact that the power generated within the complex and used by the RO process is associated with a high salts burden (mine water is desalinated at the power station), it was found that the reverse osmosis intervention would incur a lower salts footprint than the IX/S technology and would not shift salts burdens

    Barriers and facilitators to the implementation of interventions for medically unexplained symptoms in primary care:A modified Delphi study

    Objective: Medically Unexplained Symptoms (MUS) are physical symptoms that last for longer than several weeks and for which no (sufficient) somatic explanation can be found. Interventions for treating MUS in primary care are available, but their implementation in daily practice appears difficult. In the current study we aim to explore key barriers and facilitators to the implementation of MUS-interventions in primary care. Methods: A three-round modified Delphi study was performed, using the input of 58 experts that are (in)directly involved in the care for patients with MUS (e.g. general practitioners (GPs), GP mental health workers, policy advisors). In the first online questionnaire, we generated ideas about relevant barriers and facilitators on different implementation levels. These ideas were independently coded by two researchers, and reformulated into unique barriers and facilitators. In round two, participants selected the ten most relevant barriers and facilitators from round one, which were ranked on importance in round three. Results: We identified 42 unique barriers and 57 unique facilitators to the implementation of MUS-interventions. The three highest ranked barriers were all related to time, i.e. too little time for treating complex MUS-patients. The most important facilitator was a positive attitude towards MUS-patients. Results varied somewhat per profession. Conclusion: Key barriers and facilitators to the implementation of MUS-interventions seem to exist on the level of the patient, intervention, professional, organization, and external context. All of these levels should be taken into account in order to increase implementation success of MUS-interventions in primary care

    FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF SIMVASTATIN GASTRORETENTIVE DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM

    Objective: The aim of this study was to formulate and evaluate gastro retentive drug delivery system (GRRDS) using an effervescent approach for simvastatin.Methods: Floating tablets were prepared using directly compressible polymers hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) K100M, HPMC K4M and carboxymethylcellulose sodium (NaCMC). The prepared tablets were subjected to pre-formulation studies like Compressibility index, Hausner ratio and post compression parameters like buoyancy/floating test and In vitro dissolution study.Results: Drug-excipient compatibility studies performed with the help of FTIR instrument indicated that there were no interactions. The DSC thermogram of the formulations revealed that crystalline form of simvastatin existed in the formulation which was confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction. Dissolution studies indicated that there was a decrease in the drug release with an increase in the polymer viscosity. The tablets prepared with low-viscosity grade HPMC K4M exhibited short Buoyancy Lag Time and floated for a longer duration as compared with formulations containing high viscosity grade HPMC K100M. The ‘n' value for dissolution studies for all the formulations was found to be in the range of 0.647 to 0.975 indicating non-Fickian or anomalous drug transport. Conclusion: The drug release rate and floating duration of tablets depended on the nature of the polymer and other added excipients. The release rate of the drug can be optimized by using different ratios of polymers and other excipients. The formulation F8 achieved the optimized batch and complied with all the properties of the tablets

    Electrostatic potentials at Cu In,Ga Se2 grain boundaries Experiment and simulations

    In the present Letter, we report on a combined ab initio density functional theory calculation, multislice simulation, and electron holography study, performed on a amp; 931;9 grain boundary GB in a CuGaSe2 bicrystal, which exhibits a lower symmetry compared with highly symmetric amp; 931; 3 GBs. We find an electrostatic potential well at the amp; 931;9 GB of 0.8 V in depth and 1.3 nm in width, which in comparison with results from amp; 931;3 and random GBs exhibits the trend of increasing potential well depths with lower symmetry. The presence of this potential well at the amp; 931; 9 GB can be explained conclusively by a reduced density of atoms at the GB.     Quenching correction for in vivo chlorophyll fluorescence acquired by autonomous platforms: A case study with instrumented elephant seals in the Kerguelen region (Southern Ocean)

    As the proxy for Chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration, thousands of fluorescence profiles were measured by instrumented elephant seals in the Kerguelen region (Southern Ocean). For accurate retrieval of Chl a concentrations acquired by in vivo fluorometer, a two-step procedure is applied: 1) A predeployment intercalibration with accurate determination by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis, which not only calibrates fluorescence in appropriate Chl a concentration units, but also strongly reduces variability between fluorometers, and 2) a profile-by-profile quenching correction analysis, which effectively eliminates the fluorescence quenching issue at surface around noon, and results in consistent profiles between day and night. The quenching correction is conducted through an extrapolation of the deep fluorescence value toward surface. Asproved by a validation procedure in the Western Mediterranean Sea, the correction method is practical and relatively reliable when there is no credible reference, especially for deep mixed waters, as in the Southern Ocean. Even in the shallow mixed waters, the method is also effective in reducing the influence of quenching
