Monte Carlo Simulations of Ultrathin Magnetic Dots

In this work we study the thermodynamic properties of ultrathin ferromagnetic dots using Monte Carlo simulations. We investigate the vortex density as a function of the temperature and the vortex structure in monolayer dots with perpendicular anisotropy and long-range dipole interaction. The interplay between these two terms in the hamiltonian leads to an interesting behavior of the thermodynamic quantities as well as the vortex density.Comment: 10 figure

“BATTLES OVER ISSUES” IN NETWORKED PUBLICS: INVESTIGATING THE DISCURSIVE MOBILIZATION OF THE ANTIFASCIST FRAME ON TWITTER

In this article we explore the discursive mobilization of movement frames within networked publics—a form of unorganized digital activism through which movement organizations, activists, and citizens politicize ordinary conversations by engaging in adversarial meaningmaking dynamics online. Leaning on large-scale semantic network analysis and content analysis, we investigate the mobilization of the frame of antifascism within the conversation that sparked on Twitter after the brutal shooting of a group of African citizens by an Italian neofascist militant in 2018. We pay particular attention to how the discursive mobilization of the frame of antifascism occurs immediately after the shooting and how it evolves particularly in connection with offline protests. Our results shed light on the fluid nature of discursive mobilization patterns which underpin both the identification with the antifascist tradition and attempts to delegitimize this instance of collective action

A changing role for universities in the periphery

An international research on interactions between universities and firms is an opportunity to investigate this subject beyond the developed countries. This project involves 12 countries from three continents: Africa (South Africa, Nigeria and Uganda), Asia (South Korea, China, India, Thailand and Malaysia) and Latin America (Mexico, Costa Rica, Argentina and Brazil). This paper introduces a theoretical framework to deal with this broad set of countries, their different levels of NSI formation and their different levels of development. This framework may help public policies to understand the role of universities for a country search for an “active insertion in the international division of labor”.interactions between firms and universities, National Innovation Systems, catch up processes.

This working paper is an initial effort to analyze theoretical contributions from New Institutional Economics (NEI), specially the Transaction Costs framework, for understanding financial mechanisms to innovation. Transaction Costs economy is one hand from firm’s contractual theories that allows investigating how resources are allocated inside the firms. For the purpose of the paper, it will be analyze resource’s allocation for innovative activities that embraces uncertainly, asymmetric information and high risk.

Phase transition in ultrathin magnetic films with long-range interactions: Monte Carlo simulation of the anisotropic Heisenberg model

Ultrathin magnetic films can be modeled as an anisotropic Heisenberg model with long-range dipolar interactions. It is believed that the phase diagram presents three phases: An ordered ferromagnetic phase I, a phase characterized by a change from out-of-plane to in-plane in the magnetization II, and a high-temperature paramagnetic phase III. It is claimed that the border lines from phase I to III and II to III are of second order and from I to II is first order. In the present work we have performed a very careful Monte Carlo simulation of the model. Our results strongly support that the line separating phases II and III is of the BKT type.Comment: 7 page

Technological change and innovation is now playing an important role in economic growth. In this framework, investigations towards financial system role in financing technological change and innovation are important contributions to comprehend sources of economic growth. Financing innovation activities is still a gap to be treated specially in National Innovation System literature. This paper is a contribution in this direction being a reflection about financial system and innovation, showing the Brazilian case.Technological change, financial systems, Brazil

The development of globalization has led the younger generation to enter the world of investment. The rapid development of the increasing number of young investors is due to the role of the Indonesian Stock Exchange (IDX) in socializing investment programs. The program collaborates with the academic community at tertiary institutions by establishing an Investment Gallery which aims to invite the younger generation to increase their interest in investing. This study aims to examine the effect of financial knowledge, financial behavior, overconfidence, and income on investment decisions at the Muhammadiyah University Ponorogo Investment Gallery. The population in this study were investors from the Muhammadiyah Ponorogo University Investment Gallery with as many as 95 respondents. The research method and data analysis used is multiple regression analysis. The results of this study indicate that financial knowledge has an effect on investment decisions, financial behavior has an effect on investment decisions, overconfidence has an effect on investment decisions, while income has no effect on investment decisions
