    Wind tunnel tests on a tail-less swept wing span-distributed cargo aircraft configuration

    The configuration consisted of a 30 deg -swept, untapered, untwisted wing utilizing a low-moment cambered airfoil of 20 percent streamwise thickness designed for low wave drag at M = 0.6, C sub L = 0.4. The tests covered a range of Mach numbers 0.3 to 0.725 and chord Reynolds number 1,100,000 to 2,040,000, angles of attack up to model buffet and sideslip angles + or - 4 deg. Configuration build up, wing pod filleting, airfoil modification and trailing edge control deflection effects were briefly investigated. Three wing tip vertical tail designs were also tested. Wing body filleting and a simple airfoil modification both produced increments to maximum lift/drag ratio. Addition of pods eliminated pitch instability of the basic wing. While the magnitude of these benefits probably was Reynolds number sensitive, they underline the potential for improving the aerodynamics of the present configuration. The cruise parameter (product of Mach number and lift/drag ratio) attained a maximum close to the airfoil design point. The configuration was found to be positively stable with normal control effectiveness about all three axes in the Mach number and C sub L range of interest

    Transport in Luttinger Liquids

    We give a brief introduction to Luttinger liquids and to the phenomena of electronic transport or conductance in quantum wires. We explain why the subject of transport in Luttinger liquids is relevant and fascinating and review some important results on tunneling through barriers in a one-dimensional quantum wire and the phenomena of persistent currents in mesoscopic rings. We give a brief description of our own work on transport through doubly-crossed Luttinger liquids and transport in the Schulz-Shastry exactly solvable Luttinger-like model.Comment: Latex file, 15 pages, four eps figure

    Dynamic Response of Ising System to a Pulsed Field

    The dynamical response to a pulsed magnetic field has been studied here both using Monte Carlo simulation and by solving numerically the meanfield dynamical equation of motion for the Ising model. The ratio R_p of the response magnetisation half-width to the width of the external field pulse has been observed to diverge and pulse susceptibility \chi_p (ratio of the response magnetisation peak height and the pulse height) gives a peak near the order-disorder transition temperature T_c (for the unperturbed system). The Monte Carlo results for Ising system on square lattice show that R_p diverges at T_c, with the exponent νz2.0\nu z \cong 2.0, while \chi_p shows a peak at TceT_c^e, which is a function of the field pulse width δt\delta t. A finite size (in time) scaling analysis shows that Tce=Tc+C(δt)1/xT_c^e = T_c + C (\delta t)^{-1/x}, with x=νz2.0x = \nu z \cong 2.0. The meanfield results show that both the divergence of R and the peak in \chi_p occur at the meanfield transition temperature, while the peak height in χp(δt)y\chi_p \sim (\delta t)^y, y1y \cong 1 for small values of δt\delta t.     Structural organization of the meiotic prophase chromatin in the rat testis

    Pachytene nuclei were isolated from rat testes by the unit gravity sedimentation technique and contained histone variants H1a, H1t, TH2A, TH2B, and X2 in addition to the somatic histones H1bde, H1c, H2A, H2B, H3, and H4. The basic organization of the pachytene chromatin namely the nucleosome repeat length and the accessibility to micrococcal nuclease, was similar to that of rat liver interphase chromatin. However, when digested by DNase I, the susceptibility of pachytene chromatin was 25% more than liver chromatin under identical conditions. Nucleosome core particles were isolated from both liver and pachytene nuclei and were characterized for their DNA length and integrity of the nucleoprotein on low ionic strength nucleoprotein gels. While liver core particles contained all the somatic histones H2A, H2B, H3, and H4, in the pachytene core particles, histone variants TH2A, X2, and TH2B had replaced nearly 60% of the respective somatic histones. A comparison of the circular dichroism spectra obtained for pachytene and liver core particles indicated that the pachytene core particles were less compact than the liver core particles. Studies on the thermal denaturation properties of the two types of core particles revealed that the fraction of the pachytene core DNA melting at the premelting temperature region of 55-60 degrees C was significantly higher than that of the liver core DNA

    Search for optical bursts from the gamma ray burst source GBS 0526-66

    Attempts were made to detect optical bursts from the gamma-ray burst source GBS 0526-66 during Dec. 31, 1984 to Jan. 2, 1985 and Feb. 23 to Feb. 24, 1985, using the one meter reflector of the Kavalur Observatory. Jan. 1, 1985 coincided with the zero phase of the predicted 164 day period of burst activity from the source (Rothschild and Lingenfelter, 1984). A new optical burst photon counting system with adjustable trigger threshold was used in parallel with a high speed photometer for the observations. The best time resolution was 1 ms and maximum count rate capability was 255,000 counts s(-1). Details of the instrumentation and observational results are presented
