Field application of anabolic steroids in carp seed production. II. Rearing of spawn to fry stage.

Two synthetic androgenic steroids, Ethylestrenol (17 β - Hydroxy - 17 α ethyl - estr - 4 - en - 3 - one) and Stanozolal (17 β - Hydroxy- 17 α - methyl - 5 a - androstano - 3, 2 - C - pyrazole) were fed via diet at 3 ppm to the spawn of Rohu and Mrigal which were reared up to fry stage over a period of 15 days in earthen carp nurseries. Both hormones enhanced growth of spawn. A maximum of 25.78% increase in length and 25.69% increase in weight as compared to the controls has been recorded. Growth rate was recorded to be 0.8 mm & 2.48 mg/day (control), and 1.13 mm & 2.67 mg/day (Stanozolol treated) in case of Mrigal spawn; and 0.91 mm & 2.39 mg/day (control), 1.12 mm & 2.90 mg/day (Ethylestrenol treated), and 1.10 mm & 2.57 mg/day (Stanozolol treated) in case of Rohu spawn. A decrease in the values of Relative Condition Factor upon hormone administration was also noticed

The effect of increase in the number of fishing trips on the economic efficiency of 9.82 m and 11 m fishing trawlers along Kerala coast

Cost-benefit analysis of a 9.82 m and 11 m fishing trawlers based on the number of fishing trips is presented. The number of fishing trips per year determines the profit and loss of the trawler. With the increase in the number of fishing trips, the profit also increase for both the sizes of trawlers. The minimum quantity of prawn and fish to be landed for 0-20% profit for varying number of fishing trips are worked out. The break-even for 9.82 and 11m trawlers was observed to be 185 and 210 fishing trips respectively during 1980-81

THE REPERTORY GRID INTERVIEW OF A DEPRESSED PATIENT

The construct system of a patient of Depression is investigated with the Rank Order Repertory Grid Technique, using principal component analysis to analyse the grid matrix. The investigation helps test clinical judgments and hypotheses concerning the patient and also suggests new directions for further clinical enquiry. This case study demonstrates how the grid technique can make possible a more comprehensive understanding of the cognitive processes of the patient

Severity of rotavirus gastroenteritis in an Indian population: Report from a 3 year surveillance study

AbstractThis study investigated the severity of rotavirus gastroenteritis (RVGE) in hospitalized children less than 60 months of age and compared severity in the first five months of life to severity in children 6 to 23 months of age. Results from a 3 year surveillance study show an early peak of rotavirus disease, with 117 (31%) RVGE hospitalizations in children <6 months old. Higher incidence of severe dehydration, acidemia and acidosis at admission and prolonged hospitalization >7 days were seen in infants 0–5 months of age. The findings support the need for consideration of timely immunization or an accelerated immunization schedule with a birth dose to protect this vulnerable age

A REPERTORY GRID COMPARISON OF ENDOGENOUS AND NEUROTIC DEPRESSIONS

The Repertory Grid Technique was used to study the construct systems of patients diagnosed as Endogenous and Neurotic Depressions. Twenty-five patients of each category were administered a Rank Order Repertory Grid comprising ten elements and fifteen constructs. The completed matrices were subjected to principal component analysis. Inter-element distance was used as the psychological measure to compare the two groups on characteristics like sell-ideal congruence, self-esteem, self-criticalness, degree of identification with parents, and the degree of temperamental and/or personality differences between parents as perceived by them. No significant differences between the two categories emerged on any of the dimensions referred to above. One striking observation in many grids was a tendency to isolate the element ‘self’. Another observation was the difficulties some subjects had with a few elements and constructs probably due to cultural factors
