    Proton NMR measurements of the local magnetic field in the paramagnetic metal and antiferromagnetic insulator phases of Ī»\lambda-(BETS)2_{2}FeCl4_{4}

    Measurements of the 1^{1}H-NMR spectrum of a small (āˆ¼\sim 4 Ī¼\mug) single crystal of the organic conductor Ī»\lambda-(BETS)2_{2}FeCl4_{4} are reported with an applied magnetic field B\bf{B}0_{0} = 9 T parallel to the a-axis in the acac-plane over a temperature (T)(T) range 2.0 āˆ’- 180 K. They provide the distribution of the static local magnetic field at the proton sites in the paramagnetic metal (PM) and antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI) phases, along with the changes that occur at the PMāˆ’-AFI phase transition. The spectra have six main peaks that are significantly broadened and shifted at low TT. The origin of these features is attributed to the large dipolar field from the 3d Fe3+^{3+} ion moments (spin SdS_{\rm{d}} = 5/2). Their amplitude and Tāˆ’T-dependence are modeled using a modified Brillouin function that includes a mean field approximation for the total exchange interaction (J0J_{0}) between one Fe3+^{3+} ion and its two nearest neighbors. A good fit is obtained using J0J_{0} = āˆ’- 1.7 K. At temperatures below the PMāˆ’-AFI transition temperature TMIT_{MI} = 3.5 K, an extra peak appears on the high frequency side of the spectrum and the details of the spectrum become smeared. Also, the rms linewidth and the frequency shift of the spectral distribution are discontinuous, consistent with the transition being first-order. These measurements verify that the dominant local magnetic field contribution is from the Fe3+^{3+} ions and indicate that there is a significant change in the static local magnetic field distribution at the proton sites on traversing the PM to AFI phase transition.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures. Preporuke se odnosena najznačajnije bioloÅ”ke opasnosti po zdravlje ljudi koje se mogu naći u mesu.Pored Salmonella spp., Toxoplasma gondii i Trichinella spp., kao bioloÅ”ka opasnostnavodi se i Yersinia enterocolitica. Yersinia enterocolitica, kao i druge bakterije iz familijeEnterobacteriaceae, ima sposobnost opstanka u spoljaÅ”njoj sredini, u koju dospevapreko inficiranih životinja. U Evropi, svinje su najčeŔći asimptomatski nosiocipatogenih sojeva Y. enterocolitica za ljude, posebno soja biotipa 4 (serotipa O:3) i netako učestalog biotipa 2 (serotip O:9 i O:27). Uzročnici su najčeŔće lokalizovani uoralnoj duplji, posebno u tonzilama, submaksilarnim limfnim čvorovima, crevima ifecesu svinja. Pravilan postupak sa trupovima svinja, nakon klanja, može znatno dasmanji nivo kontaminacije mesa svinja. Učestalost Y. enterocolitica kod svinja, kaorezervoara ovog patogena, veoma varira. Slučajevi jersinioze kod ljudi zabeleženi su,kako u Evropi, tako i u Japanu, SAD, Nigeriji i Brazilu

    GM-CSF-Producing Th Cells in Rats Sensitive and Resistant to Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis

    Given that granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is identified as the key factor to endow auto-reactive Th cells with the potential to induce neuroinflammation in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) models, the frequency and phenotype of GM-CSF-producing (GM-CSF+) Th cells in draining lymph nodes (dLNs) and spinal cord (SC) of Albino Oxford (AO) and Dark Agouti (DA) rats immunized for EAE were examined. The generation of neuroantigen-specific GM-CSF+ Th lymphocytes was impaired in dLNs of AO rats (relatively resistant to EAE induction) compared with their DA counterparts (susceptible to EAE) reflecting impaired CD4+ lymphocyte proliferation and less supportive of GM-CSF+ Th cell differentiation dLN cytokine microenvironment. Immunophenotyping of GM-CSF+ Th cells showed their phenotypic heterogeneity in both strains and revealed lower frequency of IL-17+ IFN-gamma+, IL-17+ IFN-gamma-, and IL-17-IFN-gamma+ cells accompanied by higher frequency of IL-17-IFN-gamma- cells among them in AO than in DA rats. Compared with DA, in AO rats was also found (i) slightly lower surface density of CCR2 (drives accumulation of highly pathogenic GM-CSF+ IFN-gamma+ Th17 cells in SC) on GM-CSF+ IFN-gamma+ Th17 lymphocytes from dLNs, and (ii) diminished CCL2 mRNA expression in SC tissue, suggesting their impaired migration into the SC. Moreover, dLN and SC cytokine environments in AO rats were shown to be less supportive of GM-CSF+ IFN-gamma+ Th17 cell differentiation (judging by lower expression of mRNAs for IL-1 beta, IL-6 and IL-23/p19). In accordance with the (i) lower frequency of GM-CSF+ Th cells in dLNs and SC of AO rats and their lower GM-CSF production, and (ii) impaired CCL2 expression in the SC tissue, the proportion of proinflammatory monocytes among peripheral blood cells and their progeny (CD45(hi) cells) among the SC CD11b+ cells were reduced in AO compared with DA rats. Collectively, the results indicate that the strain specificities in efficacy of several mechanisms controlling (auto) reactive CD4+ lymphocyte expansion/differentiation into the cells with pathogenic phenotype and migration of the latter to the SC contribute to AO rat resistance to EAE

    Statistical learning (SL), the ability to pick up patterns in sensory input, serves as one of the building blocks of language acquisition. Although SL has been studied extensively in developmental dyslexia (DD), much less is known about the way SL evolves over time. The handful of studies examining this question were all limited to the acquisition of motor sequential knowledge or highly learned segmented linguistic units. Here we examined memory consolidation of statistical regularities in adults with DD and typically developed (TD) readers by using auditory SL requiring the segmentation of units from continuous input, which represents one of the earliest learning challenges in language acquisition. DD and TD groups were exposed to tones in a probabilistically determined sequential structure varying in difficulty and subsequently tested for recognition of novel short sequences that adhered to this statistical pattern in immediate and delayed recall sessions separated by a night of sleep. SL performance of the DD group at the easy and hard difficulty levels was poorer than that of the TD group in the immediate recall session. Importantly, DD participants showed a significant overnight deterioration in SL performance at the medium difficulty level compared to TD, who instead showed overnight stabilization of the learned information. These findings imply that SL difficulties in DD may arise not only from impaired initial learning but also due to a failure to consolidate statistically structured information into long-term memory.     Isoniazid-resistant Mycobacterium kansasii in an HIV-positive patient, and possible development of immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome after initiation of highly active antiretroviral therapy: case report

    Non-tuberculous mycobacteria are rare but important causes of infection in HIV-positive individuals. A 28-year-old HIV-positive male presented with a high fever, non-productive cough, right subcostal pain, splenomegaly, a very low CD4 count, elevated C-reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and a normal white blood cell count. The suspicion of tuberculosis (TB) was very high, and sputum samples were positive for acid-fast bacilli. Standard quadruple anti-TB therapy was initiated, but once culture of the sample revealed Mycobacterium kansasii, pyrazinamide was withdrawn. Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) was initiated soon after, consisting of abacavir/lamivudine and efavirenz. The patient's general condition deteriorated 2 weeks after HAART initiation, which could have been due to the development of immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS). The patient recovered and was discharged in good condition. However, the results of resistance testing of the isolated organism arrived after discharge, and showed isoniazid and streptomycin resistance. This is the first case report of M. kansasii infection from Serbia and shows the difficulties encountered during the course of treatment

    A Failure of Sleep-Dependent Consolidation of Visuo-perceptual Procedural Learning in Young Adults with ADHD

    ADHD has been associated with cortico-striatal dysfunction that may lead to procedural memory abnormalities. Sleep plays a critical role in consolidating procedural memories and sleep problems are an integral part of the psychopathology of ADHD. This raises the possibility that altered sleep processes characterizing those with ADHD could contribute to their skill learning impairments. On this basis, the present study tested the hypothesis that young adults with ADHD have altered sleep-dependent procedural memory consolidation. Participants with ADHD and neurotypicals were trained on a visual discrimination task that has been shown to benefit from sleep. Half of the participants were tested after a 12-hour break that included nocturnal sleep (sleep condition), whereas the other half were tested after a 12-h daytime break that did not include sleep (wakefulness condition) to assess the specific contribution of sleep to improvement in task performance. Despite having a similar degree of initial learning, participants with ADHD did not improve in the visual discrimination task following a sleep interval compared to neurotypicals, while they were on par with neurotypicals during the wakefulness condition. These findings represent the first demonstration of a failure in sleep-dependent consolidation of procedural learning in young adults with ADHD. Such a failure is likely to disrupt automatic control routines that are normally provided by the non-declarative memory system, thereby increasing the load on attentional resources of individuals with ADHD
