    Adaptive Techniques to Detect White Spaces Using Spectrum Sensing In Cognitive Radio

    Spectrum sensing is one of the key technologies to realize dynamic spectrum access in cognitive radio systems. Cognitive radios have been proposed as a possible solution to improve spectrum utilization by enabling opportunistic spectrum sharing. The main requirement for allowing CR�s to use proper exploitation of white spaces in the radio spectrum requires fast, robust, and accurate methods for their detection. Spectrum sensing allows cognitive users to autonomously identify unused portions of the radio spectrum. In this work, energy detection technique is considered for spectrum sensing and uses the cost-function that depends upon a single parameter which gives the aggregate information about the present or absent of licensed users. The process of threshold selection for energy detection is addressed by the constant false alarm method and selection is carried out considering present conditions of noise levels. In this paper, simulation results shown that if we dynamically adjust the detection threshold based on noise level present during the detection process. The detection of white spaces will be higher at lower sampling time as compared with probability of detection and false alarm rate

    A Special Extract of Bacopa monnieri

    Fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP) is a neuronal translational repressor and has been implicated in learning, memory, and cognition. However, the role of Bacopa monnieri extract (CDRI-08) in enhancing cognitive abilities in hypoxia-induced memory impairment via Fmr-1 gene expression is not known. Here, we have studied effects of CDRI-08 on the expression of Fmr-1 gene in the hippocampus of well validated cobalt chloride (CoCl2)-induced hypoxia mimetic mice and analyzed the data with alterations in spatial memory. Results obtained from Morris water maze test suggest that CoCl2 treatment causes severe loss of spatial memory and CDRI-08 is capable of reversing it towards that in the normal control mice. Our semiquantitative RT-PCR, Western blot, and immunofluorescence microscopic data reveal that CoCl2-induced hypoxia significantly upregulates the expression of Hif-1α and downregulates the Fmr-1 expression in the hippocampus, respectively. Further, CDRI-08 administration reverses the memory loss and this is correlated with significant downregulation of Hif-1α and upregulation of Fmr-1 expression. Our data are novel and may provide mechanisms of hypoxia-induced impairments in the spatial memory and action of CDRI-08 in the recovery of hypoxia led memory impairment involving Fmr-1 gene encoded protein called FMRP

    COMPARISON OF SAFETY OF LATANOPROST WITH PRESERVATIVE BENZALKONIUM CHLORIDE (BAK) VERSUS BAK-FREE TRAVOPROST IN PRIMARY OPEN-ANGLE GLAUCOMA

    Objective: The objective of this study was to compare the safety of BAK-preserved latanoprost versus travoprost BAK-free ophthalmic solution in the primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). Methods: Prospective, open-labeled, and randomized comparative study conducted in tertiary care hospital. Forty patients were enrolled and divided into 20 patients in each group: Group A topical latanoprost (0.005%) with BAK and Group B topical BAK-free travoprost (0.004%). Safety assessment was done by following parameters – Schrimer test (ST), tear break-up time (TBUT), and ocular surface disease index (OSDI). Results: ST and TBUT were calculated at baseline, 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, and 4 months and OSDI scores were calculated at baseline, 2 months and 4 months. Group A and B were compared using ST, TBUT, and OSDI scores. Group B showed statistically significant results (p<0.05). Conclusion: Topical BAK-free travoprost is more tolerable than BAK-preserved latanoprostin POAG

    Comparison of vaginal and oral misoprostol, for the induction of labour in women with intra-uterine foetal death

    Background: Misoprostol is a prostaglandin E1 analogue, a methyl-ester of prostaglandin E1 additionally methylated at C-16. Misoprostol is an effective myometrial stimulant of pregnant uterus, selectively binding to prostanoid receptors. The objective of the study was to compare the efficacy of vaginal and oral misoprostol for the induction of labour in women with intra-uterine foetal death (IUFD).Methods: A prospective randomised clinical trial, comparing 50µg oral and 50µg vaginal misoprostol, six hourlies for a maximum of four doses for the induction of labour in women with IUFD. All patients with IUFD after 28 weeks without previous uterine surgeries, without contraindications for prostaglandins are included in the study. The study was conducted in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology MVJ Medical College and Research Hospital, Hoskote. Bangalore from June 2012 to June 2015. It is a tertiary institution serving predominantly rural population. The primary outcome measure was the induction to delivery time, secondary all complications were noted.Results: Twenty-five women were randomised to the vaginal route and twenty-five to the oral route. The induction to delivery time was longer with vaginal misoprostol 10.5±4.03 compared to oral misoprostol (9.58±4.9). There was no significant difference in the amount of misoprostol needed to achieve successful induction in the two groups. 3 patients needed oxytocin augmentation to complete the induction of labour. There were no cases of failed induction. The systemic side effects (shivering, diarrhoea, vomiting and pyrexia) were more common with oral misoprostol (44.5%) compared to vaginal misoprostol (20%).Conclusions: Oral misoprostol achieved successful induction of labour in women with IUFD in a shorter time than vaginal misoprostol. Both routes are equally effective in termination of pregnancy. Sublingual route is easy to administer, patient compliant, no need for internal examination, less chance of labour dysfunction, less chance of post-partum sepsis

    GBJOF: Gradient Boosting Integrated with Jaya Algorithm to Optimize the Features in Malware Analysis

    Malware analysis is used to identify suspicious file transferring in the network. It can be identified efficiently by using the reverse engineering hybrid approach. Implementing a hybrid approach depends on the feature selection because the dataset contains static and dynamic parameters. The given dataset contains 85 attributes with 10 different class labels. Since it has high dimensional and multi-classification data, existing approaches of ML could be more efficient in reducing the features. The model combines the enhanced JAYA genetic algorithm with a gradient boosting technique to identify the efficiency and a smaller number of features. Many existing approaches for feature selection either implement correlation analysis or wrapper techniques. The major disadvantages of these issues are that they are facing fitting problems with a very small number of features. With the Usage of the genetic approach, this paper has achieved 95% accuracy with 12 features, approximately 7% greater than ML approaches

Discovered approximately 20 years ago, this channel is normally absent in the CNS but is transcriptionally upregulated after CNS injury. A comprehensive review on the pathophysiology and role of SUR1 in the CNS was published in 2012. Since then, the breadth and depth of understanding of the involvement of this channel in secondary injury has undergone exponential growth: SUR1-TRPM4 inhibition has been shown to decrease cerebral edema and hemorrhage progression in multiple preclinical models as well as in early clinical studies across a range of CNS diseases including ischemic stroke, traumatic brain injury, cardiac arrest, subarachnoid hemorrhage, spinal cord injury, intracerebral hemorrhage, multiple sclerosis, encephalitis, neuromalignancies, pain, liver failure, status epilepticus, retinopathies and HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder. Given these substantial developments, combined with the timeliness of ongoing clinical trials of SUR1 inhibition, now, another decade later, we review advances pertaining to SUR1-TRPM4 pathobiology in this spectrum of CNS disease—providing an overview of the journey from patch-clamp experiments to phase III trials.No funding directly supported the writing of this review.     Rapid optical variability of TeV blazars

    In this first systematic attempt to characterise the intranight optical variability (INOV) of TeV detected blazars, we have monitored a well defined set of 9 TeV blazars on total 26 nights during 2004-2010. In this R (or V)-band monitoring programme only one blazar was monitored per night for a minimum duration of 4 hours. Using the CCD, an INOV detection threshold of ~ 1-2 % was achieved in the densely sampled DLCs. We have further expanded the sample by including another 13 TeV blazars from literature. This enlarged sample of 22 TeV blazars, monitored on a total of 116 nights (including 55 nights newly reported here), has enabled us to arrive at the first estimate of the INOV duty cycle of TeV detected blazars. Applying the C-test, the INOV DC is found to be 59 %, which decreases to 47 % if only INOV fractional amplitudes above 3 % are considered. These observations also permit, for the first time, a comparison of the INOV characteristics of the two major subclasses of TeV detected BL Lacs, namely LBLs and HBLs, for which we find the INOV DCs to be ~ 63 % and ~ 38 %, respectively. This demonstrates that the INOV differential between LBLs and HBLs persists even when only their TeV detected subsets are considered. Despite dense sampling, the intranight light curves of the 22 TeV blazars have not revealed even a single feature on time scale substantially shorter than 1 hour, even though the inner jets of TeV blazars are believed to have exceptionally large bulk Lorentz factors (and correspondingly stronger time compression). An intriguing feature, clearly detected in the light curve of the HBL J1555+1111, is a 4 per cent `dip' on a 1 hour timescale. This unique feature could have arisen from absorption in a dusty gas cloud, occulting a superluminally moving optical knot in the parsec scale jet of this relatively luminous BL Lacs object.Comment: 39 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Excessive Biologic Response to IFNβ Is Associated with Poor Treatment Response in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis

    Interferon-beta (IFNβ) is used to inhibit disease activity in multiple sclerosis (MS), but its mechanisms of action are incompletely understood, individual treatment response varies, and biological markers predicting response to treatment have yet to be identified.he relationship between the molecular response to IFNβ and treatment response was determined in 85 patients using a longitudinal design in which treatment effect was categorized by brain magnetic resonance imaging as good (n = 70) or poor response (n = 15). Molecular response was quantified using a customized cDNA macroarray assay for 166 IFN-regulated genes (IRGs).The molecular response to IFNβ differed significantly between patients in the pattern and number of regulated genes. The molecular response was strikingly stable for individuals for as long as 24 months, however, suggesting an individual ‘IFN response fingerprint’. Unexpectedly, patients with poor response showed an exaggerated molecular response. IRG induction ratios demonstrated an exaggerated molecular response at both the first and 6-month IFNβ injections.MS patients exhibit individually unique but temporally stable biological responses to IFNβ. Poor treatment response is not explained by the duration of biological effects or the specific genes induced. Rather, individuals with poor treatment response have a generally exaggerated biological response to type 1 IFN injections. We hypothesize that the molecular response to type I IFN identifies a pathogenetically distinct subset of MS patients whose disease is driven in part by innate immunity. The findings suggest a strategy for biologically based, rational use of IFNβ for individual MS patients

    CoCl2-induced biochemical hypoxia down regulates activities and expression of super oxide dismutase and catalase in cerebral cortex of mice

    Hypoxia-induced oxidative stress is one of the major hallmark reasons underlying brain dysfunction. In the present manuscript, we have used CoCl2-induced hypoxic mice to investigate alterations in the activities of chief antioxidative stress enzymes- superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) and expression of their genes Sod1 and Cat in the cerebral cortex as this model has not been routinely used for carrying out such study. Hypoxia mimetic mice model was accordingly developed by oral CoCl2 administration to mice and validated by analyzing alterations in the expression of the hypoxia inducible factor gene Hif-1α and its immediate responsive genes. Our Western blot data demonstrated that a dose of 40 mg/kg BW of CoCl2 was able to generate hypoxia like condition in mice in which Hif-1α and its immediate responsive genes-glutamate transporter-1 (Slc2a1) and erythropoietin (Epo) expression were up regulated. Our in-gel assay data indicated that SOD and CAT activities significantly declined and it was associated with significant down regulation of Sod1 and Epo expression as evident from our semi quantitative RT-PCR and Western blot data, which might be correlated with up regulation of Hif-1α expression in the cerebral cortex of the CoCl2-treated hypoxic mice. Our findings suggest that CoCl2-induced hypoxic mouse model is useful for studying alterations in the anti oxidative enzymes and biochemical/molecular/neurobiological analysis of hypoxia-induced alterations in brain function
