    En junio de 1902, tropas mexicanas atacaron un campamento de mujeres y niños yaquis en Sonora, México, matando a 124 yaquis. Tres semanas más tarde, el antropólogo físico norteamericano Aleš Hrdlička recogió los cráneos de 10 individuos, huesos humanos, sombreros, mantas, armas y una cuna del campo de batalla. Envió estos materiales al Museo Americano de Historia Natural en la ciudad de Nueva York. El proyecto binacional Cerro Mazatán colaboró con las tribus yaquis de Sonora y Arizona para repatriar los restos humanos y otros materiales que Hrdlička tomó del campo de batalla. La colaboración fue un éxito y en el otoño de 2009 el Museo Nacional de Historia Natural devolvió los restos al pueblo yaqui. Este proyecto es un ejemplo valioso de cómo la Arqueología indígena puede arreglar las cosas y expiar las transgresiones pasadas de la arqueología.In June 1902, Mexican troops attacked the camp of women and children and killed 124 Yaqui. Three weeks later, the North American physical anthropologist Aleš Hrdlička collected the skulls of 10 individuals, human bone, hats, blankets, weapons, and a cradleboard from the battlefield. He shipped these materials to the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. The bi-national Proyecto Cerro Mazatán project worked collaboratively with the Yaqui tribes of Sonora and Arizona to repatriate the human remains and other materials than Hrdlička took from the battlefield. The collaboration was a success and in the fall of 2009 the National Museum of Natural History returned the remains to the Yaqui people. This project is a valuable example of how indigenous Archaeology can set things right and atone for archaeology’s past transgressions.Fil: McGuire, Randall H.

    Action heritage: research, communities, social justice

    Societies are unequal and unjust to varying degrees and heritage practitioners unavoidably work with, perpetuate and have the potential to change these inequalities. This article proposes a new framework for undertaking heritage research that can be applied widely and purposefully to achieve social justice, and which we refer to as action heritage. Our primary sources are semi-structured conversations we held with some of the participants in three heritage projects in South Yorkshire, UK: members of a hostel for homeless young people, a primary school, and a local history group. We examine ‘disruptions’ in the projects to understand the repositioning of the participants as researchers. The disruptions include introducing a scrapbook for personal stories in the homeless youth project and giving the school children opportunities to excavate alongside professional archaeologists. These disruptions reveal material and social inequalities through perceptible changes in how the projects were oriented and how the participants thought about the research. We draw on this empirical research and theorisations of social justice to develop a new framework for undertaking co-produced research. Action heritage is ‘undisciplinary’ research that privileges process over outcomes, and which achieves parity of participation between academic and community-based researchers through sustained recognition and redistribution

    The Role of Early Life Experience and Species Differences in Alcohol Intake in Microtine Rodents

    Social relationships have important effects on alcohol drinking. There are conflicting reports, however, about whether early-life family structure plays an important role in moderating alcohol use in humans. We have previously modeled social facilitation of alcohol drinking in peers in socially monogamous prairie voles. We have also modeled the effects of family structure on the development of adult social and emotional behaviors. Here we assessed whether alcohol intake would differ in prairie voles reared by both parents compared to those reared by a single mother. We also assessed whether meadow voles, a closely related species that do not form lasting reproductive partnerships, would differ in alcohol drinking or in the effect of social influence on drinking. Prairie voles were reared either bi-parentally (BP) or by a single mother (SM). BP- and SM-reared adult prairie voles and BP-reared adult meadow voles were given limited access to a choice between alcohol (10%) and water over four days and assessed for drinking behavior in social and non-social drinking environments. While alcohol preference was not different between species, meadow voles drank significantly lower doses than prairie voles. Meadow voles also had significantly higher blood ethanol concentrations than prairie voles after receiving the same dose, suggesting differences in ethanol metabolism. Both species, regardless of rearing condition, consumed more alcohol in the social drinking condition than the non-social condition. Early life family structure did not significantly affect any measure. Greater drinking in the social condition indicates that alcohol intake is influenced similarly in both species by the presence of a peer. While the ability of prairie voles to model humans may be limited, the lack of differences in alcohol drinking in BP- and SM-reared prairie voles lends biological support to human studies demonstrating no effect of single-parenting on alcohol abuse
