Radiotelemetric Evaluation of the Effect of Horticultural Practices on Pine and Meadow Voles in Apple Orchards: I. Rotary Mowing

Pine voles (Microtus pinetorum) and meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) were studied in three apple orchard plots in the Hudson Valley of New York during June and July 1980. Selected voles from each plot were given miniature radiotransmitters and then tracked before, during, and after rotary mowing. A total of 11 pine voles and 6 meadow voles were tracked. Home range size was much larger for meadow voles than pine voles. During mowing, meadow voles were noticeably affected by the mower; pine voles were not. No change occurred in the area utilized before and after mowing for either species, nor did any significant mortality result from the treatment. Voles of both species showed a slight but significant tendency to remain closer to the tree rows after mowing. We conclude that rotary mowing has a negligible effect on vole movement and survival under the conditions of this study

As such, it forms a useful model for creating a cohesive urban fabric. The warehouses reflect the rules of a concise architectural language. Thus, while each building was designed separately for different clients over the span of fifty years. all work together to form an urban environment which is intense. coherent and humane. Functionally, this fabric has undergone continuous change. Some of the warehouses now accommodate small printing houses and workshops; professional offices. shops, museums, studios and loft apartments. Thus. this tightly ordered 'family' of buildings has proven to be inherently inhabitable. The model represented by the warehouse fabric embodies my own goals and strategies for redeveloping and expanding the Fort Point Channel District as a living and working neighbourhood. My thesis proposes strategies for infrastructure and building typologies which will support high density, lowrise development as an extension to the existing fabric. The new development should be flexible, yet · harmonious: specific enough to suggest a distinct, overall character but open-ended enough to allow innovation in individual buildings and changing uses over time. The method tested through this investigation is therefore a process of layering. Rather than develop highly particularized solutions for each property, strategies are applied to the site as a whole. Once such overall strategies are agreed upon, specific solutions can be developed incrementally, but 'thematically', adjusting to changing circumstances as the need arises but contributing to a coherent whole.by John Randall Dale.M.S

Increasingly, the answer lies not just in strong academic skills but also in a sense of self and the individual’s role in supporting and building a vibrant community

Tamil auxiliary verbs.

The immediate subject of this work is the semantics of a syntactically- defined set of Tamil verbs, all but one of which are used as main verbs as well as auxiliaries. Those which are discussed in most detail are kiTu. viTu. kiTTiru, iru, vai and vecciru. Mentioned in somewhat less detail are kiTTuvaa, kiTTupoo, vaa, poo (in two meanings), aaku and tole. In setting out to investigate these forms, certain limitations of the traditional methods of linguistic investigation became apparent. With the hope of obtaining more reliable information than was available from regular informants, a series of questionnaires was devised and administered to a total of 117 people from 27 villages in the Chidambaram Taluk of Tamilnadu. It is hoped that the account given here of the use of an interrelated series of questionnaires for the detailed investigation of a specified area of a language will contribute to the methodological basis on which linguistic investigation is founded. From the results of this investigation, it was found that a study of Tamil auxiliary verbs is relevant to certain general points of interest within current linguistic theory. Evidence is presented in favour of the separation of syntax and semantics, on the close relationship between auxiliary and main verbs, and on the need within a linguistic theory for devices to handle gradation
