    Fluctuation relations for heat engines in time-periodic steady states

    A fluctuation relation for heat engines (FRHE) has been derived recently. In the beginning, the system is in contact with the cooler bath. The system is then coupled to the hotter bath and external parameters are changed cyclically, eventually bringing the system back to its initial state, once the coupling with the hot bath is switched off. In this work, we lift the condition of initial thermal equilibrium and derive a new fluctuation relation for the central system (heat engine) being in a time-periodic steady state (TPSS). Carnot's inequality for classical thermodynamics follows as a direct consequence of this fluctuation theorem even in TPSS. For the special cases of the absence of hot bath and no extraction of work, we obtain the integral fluctuation theorem for total entropy and the generalized exchange fluctuation theorem, respectively. Recently microsized heat engines have been realized experimentally in the TPSS. We numerically simulate the same model and verify our proposed theorems.Comment: 9 page

    Electron-Hole Generation and Recombination Rates for Coulomb Scattering in Graphene

    We calculate electron-hole generation and recombination rates for Coulomb scattering (Auger recombination and impact ionization) in Graphene. The conduction and valence band dispersion relation in Graphene together with energy and momentum conservation requirements restrict the phase space for Coulomb scattering so that electron-hole recombination times can be much longer than 1 ps for electron-hole densities smaller than 101210^{12} cm2^{-2}.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure

    High bat (Chiroptera) diversity in the Early Eocene of India

    The geographic origin of bats is still unknown, and fossils of earliest bats are rare and poorly diversified, with, maybe, the exception of Europe. The earliest bats are recorded from the Early Eocene of North America, Europe, North Africa and Australia where they seem to appear suddenly and simultaneously. Until now, the oldest record in Asia was from the Middle Eocene. In this paper, we report the discovery of the oldest bat fauna of Asia dating from the Early Eocene of the Cambay Formation at Vastan Lignite Mine in Western India. The fossil taxa are described on the basis of well-preserved fragments of dentaries and lower teeth. The fauna is highly diversified and is represented by seven species belonging to seven genera and at least four families. Two genera and five species are new. Three species exhibit very primitive dental characters, whereas four others indicate more advanced states. Unexpectedly, this fauna presents strong affinities with the European faunas from the French Paris Basin and the German Messel locality. This could result from the limited fossil record of bats in Asia, but could also suggest new palaeobiogeographic scenarios involving the relative position of India during the Early Eocene

    Reducible Correlations in Dicke States

    We apply a simple observation to show that the generalized Dicke states can be determined from their reduced subsystems. In this framework, it is sufficient to calculate the expression for only the diagonal elements of the reudced density matrices in terms of the state coefficients. We prove that the correlation in generalized Dicke states GDN()>|GD_N^{(\ell)}> can be reduced to 22\ell-partite level.     Ultrafast Optical-Pump Terahertz-Probe Spectroscopy of the Carrier Relaxation and Recombination Dynamics in Epitaxial Graphene

    The ultrafast relaxation and recombination dynamics of photogenerated electrons and holes in epitaxial graphene are studied using optical-pump Terahertz-probe spectroscopy. The conductivity in graphene at Terahertz frequencies depends on the carrier concentration as well as the carrier distribution in energy. Time-resolved studies of the conductivity can therefore be used to probe the dynamics associated with carrier intraband relaxation and interband recombination. We report the electron-hole recombination times in epitaxial graphene for the first time. Our results show that carrier cooling occurs on sub-picosecond time scales and that interband recombination times are carrier density dependent.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Cheilitis glandularis progressing to squamous cell carcinoma in an HIV-infected patient: case report

    Cheilitis glandularis (CG), is a rare inflammatory minor salivary gland disease affecting the lower lip.The hallmarks of which include progressive enlargement and eversion of the lower labial mucosa resulting in the obliteration of the mucosal vermillion interface. A case is presented of a 47-year-old HIV-infected woman who initially manifested clinical features of CG with a typical histopathology picture of a non-specific sialadenitis while a second biopsy performed six months later revealed well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). She is symptom free one year following excision and radiotherapy treatment

    Lithographically and electrically controlled strain effects on anisotropic magnetoresistance in (Ga,Mn)As

    It has been demonstrated that magnetocrystalline anisotropies in (Ga,Mn)As are sensitive to lattice strains as small as 10^-4 and that strain can be controlled by lattice parameter engineering during growth, through post growth lithography, and electrically by bonding the (Ga,Mn)As sample to a piezoelectric transducer. In this work we show that analogous effects are observed in crystalline components of the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR). Lithographically or electrically induced strain variations can produce crystalline AMR components which are larger than the crystalline AMR and a significant fraction of the total AMR of the unprocessed (Ga,Mn)As material. In these experiments we also observe new higher order terms in the phenomenological AMR expressions and find that strain variation effects can play important role in the micromagnetic and magnetotransport characteristics of (Ga,Mn)As lateral nanoconstrictions.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, references fixe
