Effect of Irrigation and Potash Levels on Keeping Quality of Potato
Irrigation and fertilizer are the most dominating factors, in deciding the keeping quality of potato. It is, therefore, essential to formulate the efficient, reliable and economically viable irrigation management strategy with the use of potassium nutrient in order to produce better keeping quality. The investigation comprising four levels of irrigation (25, 30, 35 and 40 mm CPE (Cumulative pan evaporation) and four levels of potash (0, 100, 125 and 150 kg/ha) was carried out at Research Farm of the Department of Vegetable Science, CCS Haryana Agricultural University, (Haryana) Hisar, India during two years to find out the optimum level of irrigation and potash for obtaining higher yield of potatoes with better keeping quality at ambient room temperature. The potato variety used for the investigation was Kufri Bahar. The treatments were laid out in a split plot design with three replications. The increasing levels of irrigation and potash showed significant improvement in keeping quality parameters of potato. Likewise, the values for physiological loss in weight and decay loss of potato tubers (%) at 15, 30, 45 and 60 days after harvest were the lowest with irrigation level 40 mm CPE and application of potash @ 150 kg/ha. The two years results suggest that the irrigation level 40 mm CPE along with potash @ 150 kg/ha has shown the best treatment combination for the storage of potato at ambient room temperature under semiarid conditions of Hisar (Haryana)
Formin-dependent TGF-β signaling for epithelial to mesenchymal transition.
The role of distinct actin filament architectures in epithelial plasticity remains incompletely understood. We therefore determined roles for formins and the Arp2/3 complex, which are actin nucleators generating unbranched and branched actin filaments, respectively, in the process of epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT). In clonal lung, mammary, and renal epithelial cells, the formin activity inhibitor SMIFH2 but not the Arp2/3 complex activity inhibitor CK666 blocked EMT induced by TGF-β. SMIFH2 prevented the proximal signal of increased Smad2 phosphorylation and hence also blocked downstream EMT markers, including actin filament remodeling, decreased expression of the adherens junction protein E-cadherin, and increased expression of the matrix protein fibronectin and the transcription factor Snail. The short hairpin RNA silencing of formins DIAPH1 and DIAPH3 but not other formins phenocopied SMIFH2 effects and inhibited Smad2 phosphorylation and changes in Snail and cadherin expression. Formin activity was not necessary for the cell surface expression or dimerization of TGF-β receptors, or for nuclear translocation of TAZ, a transcription cofactor in Hippo signaling also regulated by TGF-β. Our findings reveal a previously unrecognized role for formin-dependent actin architectures in proximal TGF-β signaling that is necessary for Smad2 phosphorylation but not for cross-talk to TAZ
Electrical transport across Au/Nb:SrTiO3 Schottky interface with different Nb doping
We have investigated electron transport in Nb doped SrTiO single crystals
for two doping densities. We find that the resistivity and mobility are
temperature dependent in both whereas the carrier concentration is almost
temperature invariant. We rationalize this using the hydrogenic theory for
shallow donors. Further, we probe electrical transport across Schottky
interfaces of Au on TiO terminated n-type SrTiO. Quantitative analysis
of macroscopic I-V measurements reveal thermionic emission dominated transport
for the low doped substrate whereas it deviates from such behavior for the high
doped substrate. This work is relevant for designing devices to study
electronic transport using oxide-semiconductors.Comment: 10 Pages, 3 Figure
A NuSTAR observation of the fast symbiotic nova V745 Sco in outburst
The fast recurrent nova V745 Sco was observed in the 3-79 keV X-rays band
with NuSTAR 10 days after the optical discovery. The measured X-ray emission is
consistent with a collisionally ionized optically thin plasma at temperature of
about 2.7 keV. A prominent iron line observed at 6.7 keV does not require
enhanced iron in the ejecta. We attribute the X-ray flux to shocked
circumstellar material. No X-ray emission was observed at energies above 20
keV, and the flux in the 3-20 keV range was about 1.6 10 erg
cm s. The emission measure indicates an average electron density
of order of 10 cm.
The X-ray flux in the 0.3-10 keV band almost simultaneously measured with
Swift was about 40 times larger, mainly due to the luminous central supersoft
source emitting at energy below 1 keV. The fact that the NuSTAR spectrum cannot
be fitted with a power law, and the lack of hard X-ray emission, allow us to
rule out Comptonized gamma rays, and to place an upper limit of the order of
10 erg cm s on the gamma-ray flux of the nova on the

Effect of different potato varieties and tuber sizes on physiological changes under ambient storage performance
The storability and sprouting behavior of three grades (small, medium and large tubers) from four Indian potato cultivars was studied under ambient conditions to assess the quality changes due to physiological losses and sprouting bhaviour of potato tubers. It was found that physiological loss in weight (%), decay loss on number and weight basis (%), sprout loss on number and weight basis (%), total loss (%), general appearance, presence of black or hollow heart were affected significantly by the different varieties as well as by the size. The loss in weight of tubers due to physiological activities, decaying and sprouting increased with the increased in storage period and the loss was more in larger than smaller and medium tubers. Kufri Badshah showed the best control over sprouting, whereas, 100% sprouting was observed in Kufri Bahar with all possible combinations during storage. The maximum value for cumulative physiological loss in weight was observed in variety Kufri Bahar (12.07%), whereas, minimum was in Kufri Pushkar (7.44%). The maximum decay loss was observed in variety Kufri Pushkar (7.89 and 8.72%) and minimum in Kufri Bahar (0.00 and 4.58%) on 80th and 90th day of storage period. Black or hollow heart was absent completely in all the possible treatments. So far general appearance of the tubers was concerned, the larger tubers shrivelled more and earlier than the medium and small sized tubers. Different varieties behaved differently during the entire storage period
Determinants of student satisfaction in higher education: an empirical study in Dubai
We develop and empirically validate a student satisfaction modelling technology-enabled university environments. We use focus groups at a university in Dubai and an intensive literature review to propose a theoretical model that involves different types of student interactions; perceptions of infrastructure; and university branding as independent variables influencing student satisfaction as outcome variable. Using data collected from a random sample of 99 students, we empirically test the model using linear regression analysis. Two variables, branding and interactions of students with administrative staff are found to significantly influence student satisfaction, accounting for 61% of variance. Implications are discussed and suggestions for future research are given. With its specific context, the study requires replication in other countries to determine whether the findings are generalisable. This study is one of the rare occasions when a structural model of student satisfaction in technology-enabled environments in the Middle East has been subjected to empirical scrutiny. © 2012 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd
Geometric discord and Measurement-induced nonlocality for well known bound entangled states
We employ geometric discord and measurement induced nonlocality to quantify
non classical correlations of some well-known bipartite bound entangled states,
namely the two families of Horodecki's (, and
dimensional) bound entangled states and that of Bennett etal's in
dimension. In most of the cases our results are analytic and both
the measures attain relatively small value. The amount of quantumness in the
bound entangled state of Benatti etal and the state
having the same matrix representation (in computational basis) is same.
Coincidently, the Werner and isotropic states also exhibit the
