    GEOLOGIA DA ILHA DE SANTA CATARINA, SANTA CATARINA, BRASIL

    Do ponto de vista geológico, a ilha de Santa Catarina é constituída por maciços rochosos formados por migmatitos do Complexo Águas Mornas, por granitos São Pedro de Alcântara e Ilha e por rochas plutono-vulcânicas ácidas que compõem a Suíte Plutono-Vulcânica Cambirela, seccionados por diques básicos, ácidos e intermediários que compõem o Enxame de Diques Florianópolis, de idade cretácica e também por rochas cataclásticas, além de por falhas/fraturas diversas. Esses maciços tiveram uma evolução tectônica condicionada principalmente pelo rifteamento cretáceo que moldou seu relevo, formando cristas e elevações alongadas preferencialmente segundo direção NNE. Interligando esses maciços, ocorrem depósitos quaternários inconsolidados, que constituem a planície costeira, acumulados sob condições e ambientes deposicionais variados.     Dielectric and conductivity relaxation in mixtures of glycerol with LiCl

    We report a thorough dielectric characterization of the alpha relaxation of glass forming glycerol with varying additions of LiCl. Nine salt concentrations from 0.1 - 20 mol% are investigated in a frequency range of 20 Hz - 3 GHz and analyzed in the dielectric loss and modulus representation. Information on the dc conductivity, the dielectric relaxation time (from the loss) and the conductivity relaxation time (from the modulus) is provided. Overall, with increasing ion concentration, a transition from reorientationally to translationally dominated behavior is observed and the translational ion dynamics and the dipolar reorientational dynamics become successively coupled. This gives rise to the prospect that by adding ions to dipolar glass formers, dielectric spectroscopy may directly couple to the translational degrees of freedom determining the glass transition, even in frequency regimes where usually strong decoupling is observed.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

    Percepções maternas sobre o cuidado com o recém-nascido prematuro / Maternal perceptions about the care of the premature newborn

    Objetivos: Buscou-se compreender as percepções maternas sobre os cuidados com o recém-nascido prematuro. Método: Foi realizada uma pesquisa de abordagem qualitativa, utilizando entrevistas semi-estruturadas junto a nove mães de recém-nascidos prematuros assitidos em uma Maternidade pública de Rio Branco, Acre, Brasil, em 2017. As participantes apresentaram idades entre 18 a 49 anos completos e foram entrevistadas em ambiente hospitalar e doméstico, após a alta. As entrevistas foram submetidas à análise de conteúdo, seguindo-se às etapas de categorização, inferência, descrição e interpretação, segundo o referencial teórico de autonomia relacional. Resultados: Foram gerados cinco temas: “Percepções sobre o parto prematuro”; “Percepções sobre o nascimento e internação”; “O bebê na cama de vidro”; “Dificuldades com o cuidado”; e “Chegando em casa: e agora?”. Conclusões e implicações para a prática: As participantes relataram medo e ansiedade relacionados à atenção em saúde recebida. Necessita-se maior acolhimento por parte dos provedores de cuidados às mães de recém-nascidos prematuros. A educação em saúde, abordando todos os aspectos da atenção, destacou-se como elemento essencial na promoção da autonomia da mãe nesse contexto. 

    Biofilm formation by multidrug resistant Enterobacteriaceae strains isolated from solid organ transplant recipients

    Solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients are especially at risk of developing infections by multidrug resistant bacteria (MDR). In this study, the biofilm-forming capability of 209 MDR strains (Escherichia coli n = 106, Klebsiella pneumoniae n = 78, and Enterobacter spp. n = 25) isolated from rectal swabs in the first 48 hours before or after kidney (93 patients), liver (60 patients) or kidney/pancreas transplants (5 patients) were evaluated by using a microplate assay. Thirty-nine strains were isolated before transplant and 170 strains were isolated post-transplant. Overall, 16% of E. coli strains, 73% of K. pneumoniae strains and 4% Enterobacter strains showed moderate or strong biofilm production. Nine strains isolated from infection sites after transplantation were responsible of infections in the first month. Of these, 4 K. pneumoniae, 1 E. coli and 1 Enterobacter spp. strains isolated pre-transplant or post-transplant as colonizers caused infections in the post-transplant period. Our results suggest that in vitro biofilm formation could be an important factor for adhesion to intestine and colonization in MDR K. pneumoniae strains in SOT recipients, but this factor appears to be less important for MDR E. coli and Enterobacter spp.Acknowledgements: The authors thank Dr. Fidel Madrazo (Electron Microscopy Unit, Technology Support Services, IDIVAL) for helping with confocal microscopy.     Pattern and determinants of HIV research productivity in sub-Saharan Africa: bibliometric analysis of 1981 to 2009 PubMed papers

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Several bibliometric studies have been published on AIDS. The findings obtained from these studies have provided a general picture of the history and growth of AIDS literature. However, factors related to variation in HIV research productivity in sub-Saharan Africa have not been examined. Therefore, this study aims to fill some of the gap in existing research to provide insights into factors associated with HIV research productivity in sub-Saharan Africa.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A bibliometric analysis regarding sub-Saharan Africa HIV/AIDS research was conducted in the PubMed database for the period of 1981 to 2009. The numbers of HIV research articles indexed in PubMed was used as surrogate for total HIV research productivity. Series of univariable and multivariable negative binomial regression models were used to explore factors associated with variation in HIV research productivity in sub-Saharan Africa.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>First authors from South Africa, Uganda and Kenya contributed almost half of the total number of HIV articles indexed in PubMed between 1981 and 2009. Uganda, Zimbabwe and Malawi had better records when the total production was adjusted for gross domestic product (GDP). Comoros, the Gambia and Guinea-Bissau were the most productive countries when the total products were normalized by number of people with HIV. There were strong positive and statistically significant correlation between countries number of indexed journal (Pearson correlation r = 0.77, p = .001), number of higher institutions (r = 0.60, p = .001), number of physicians (r = 0.83, p = .001) and absolute numbers of HIV articles.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>HIV research productivity in Africa is highly skewed. To increase HIV research output, total expenditure on health (% of GDP), private expenditure on health, and adult literacy rate may be important factors to address.</p

    Critical Exponents of the N-vector model

    Recently the series for two RG functions (corresponding to the anomalous dimensions of the fields phi and phi^2) of the 3D phi^4 field theory have been extended to next order (seven loops) by Murray and Nickel. We examine here the influence of these additional terms on the estimates of critical exponents of the N-vector model, using some new ideas in the context of the Borel summation techniques. The estimates have slightly changed, but remain within errors of the previous evaluation. Exponents like eta (related to the field anomalous dimension), which were poorly determined in the previous evaluation of Le Guillou--Zinn-Justin, have seen their apparent errors significantly decrease. More importantly, perhaps, summation errors are better determined. The change in exponents affects the recently determined ratios of amplitudes and we report the corresponding new values. Finally, because an error has been discovered in the last order of the published epsilon=4-d expansions (order epsilon^5), we have also reanalyzed the determination of exponents from the epsilon-expansion. The conclusion is that the general agreement between epsilon-expansion and 3D series has improved with respect to Le Guillou--Zinn-Justin.Comment: TeX Files, 27 pages +2 figures; Some values are changed; references update

    Nonlinear electrophoresis of dielectric and metal spheres in a nematic liquid crystal

    Electrophoresis is a motion of charged dispersed particles relative to a fluid in a uniform electric field. The effect is widely used to separate macromolecules, to assemble colloidal structures, to transport particles in nano- and micro-fluidic devices and displays. Typically, the fluid is isotropic (for example, water) and the electrophoretic velocity is linearly proportional to the electric field. In linear electrophoresis, only a direct current (DC) field can drive the particles. An alternate current (AC) field is more desirable because it allows one to overcome problems such as electrolysis and absence of steady flows. Here we show that when the electrophoresis is performed in a nematic fluid, the effect becomes strongly non-linear with a velocity component that is quadratic in the applied voltage and has a direction that generally differs from the direction of linear velocity. The new phenomenon is caused by distortions of the LC orientation around the particle that break the fore-aft (or left-right) symmetry. The effect allows one to transport both charged and neutral particles, even when the particles themselves are perfectly symmetric (spherical), thus enabling new approaches in display technologies, colloidal assembly, separation, microfluidic and micromotor applications.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure

    The pedagogic beliefs of Indonesian teachers in inclusive schools

    This research explores, for the first time, the pedagogical orientations of Indonesian teachers in the context of inclusive education. A mixed-method approach was used for an analysis of questionnaire data from 140 teachers and qualitative interviews from 20 teachers in four inclusive schools. The findings suggest that, in general, the implicit orientation of teachers is social constructivist. This orientation is also reflected in their reported classroom practices. Although less common, more directive pedagogical approaches appear to have an impact upon the flexibility of roles within two teacher inclusive classrooms. Whilst the number of disabled pupils within each class was a significant issue for interviewees, no pupils were deemed unteachable in their classrooms. Furthermore, what is described by the teachers as a “special pedagogy” typically entailed additional teaching time and modified assessments, and consequently could be framed as “good teaching for all”. The questionnaires also contained responses from student and special school teachers and support the view that teachers’ beliefs about inclusive pedagogy are mediated by experience and occupation
