    Effect of ammonium concentration on alcoholic fermentation kinetics by wine yeasts for high sugar content

    Kinetics of alcoholic fermentation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae wine strains in a synthetic medium with high sugar content were established for different nitrogen initial content and are presented for 4 strains. The composition of the medium was close to grape must except that the nitrogen source consisted mainly in ammonium and was varied from 120 to 290 mg N/L assimilable nitrogen. The overall nitrogen consumed was also estimated in order to determine nitrogen requirement variability. The effect of assimilable nitrogen was in general greater on sugar consumption rates than on growth and 3 kinds of effect on sugar consumption rates were observed: i) existence of an optimal initial nitrogen level for a maximal sugar consumption rate (inhibition if excess), ii) no effect of nitrogen beyond the intermediary level (saturation), iii) sugar consumption rate proportional to the initial nitrogen level (activation). In all cases, the amount of consumed nitrogen increased with its initial concentration and so did the fructophilic capacity of the strains. The optimal requirement varied from 0.62 to 0.91 mg N per g of sugars according to the different strains. There was no general correlation between the sugar assimilation rates and the nitrogen requirement

    An LP-Based Approach for Goal Recognition as Planning

    Goal recognition aims to recognize the set of candidate goals that are compatible with the observed behavior of an agent. In this paper, we develop a method based on the operator-counting framework that efficiently computes solutions that satisfy the observations and uses the information generated to solve goal recognition tasks. Our method reasons explicitly about both partial and noisy observations: estimating uncertainty for the former, and satisfying observations given the unreliability of the sensor for the latter. We evaluate our approach empirically over a large data set, analyzing its components on how each can impact the quality of the solutions. In general, our approach is superior to previous methods in terms of agreement ratio, accuracy, and spread.     Iterative Depth-First Search for Fully Observable Non-Deterministic Planning

    Fully Observable Non-Deterministic (FOND) planning models uncertainty through actions with non-deterministic effects. Existing FOND planning algorithms are effective and employ a wide range of techniques. However, most of the existing algorithms are not robust for dealing with both non-determinism and task size. In this paper, we develop a novel iterative depth-first search algorithm that solves FOND planning tasks and produces strong cyclic policies. Our algorithm is explicitly designed for FOND planning, addressing more directly the non-deterministic aspect of FOND planning, and it also exploits the benefits of heuristic functions to make the algorithm more effective during the iterative searching process. We compare our proposed algorithm to well-known FOND planners, and show that it has robust performance over several distinct types of FOND domains considering different metrics

    Ground penetrating radar at work: A realistic perspective on utility surveying in the Netherlands through a comprehensive ground-truth dataset

    This dataset provides a comprehensive compilation of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) surveys across 125 utility surveying activities in the Netherlands. The dataset details the specific use of GPR in each authentic real-life utility surveying activity, whether employed independently or as a complementary tool alongside existing surveying methods, with or without post-processing. The dataset includes 959 radargrams, ground-truth information obtained from trial trenches, and an inventory of construction, geophysical, infrastructural, and technical features. The GPR utilised in all activities is an air-coupled radar with a 500 MHz frequency antenna, a GNSS RTK positioning system, and a measuring wheel encoder. This ground-truth dataset provides researchers with a valuable resource to further assess the practical efficacy of GPR as a utility surveying method, refine radargram processing algorithms and techniques, and explore the possibilities of predictive modelling

    GekkoFS: A temporary distributed file system for HPC applications

    We present GekkoFS, a temporary, highly-scalable burst buffer file system which has been specifically optimized for new access patterns of data-intensive High-Performance Computing (HPC) applications. The file system provides relaxed POSIX semantics, only offering features which are actually required by most (not all) applications. It is able to provide scalable I/O performance and reaches millions of metadata operations already for a small number of nodes, significantly outperforming the capabilities of general-purpose parallel file systems.The work has been funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) through the ADA-FS project as part of the Priority Programme 1648.
