    Ibn Al-Muqaffa’s Proposal for Taqnīn and its Synchronization with Islamic Law Codification in Indonesia

    The research problems addressed in the article are the background story behind Ibn al-Muqaffa’s proposal for taqnīn, the historical background of the creation of the Islamic law codification in Indonesia, and the synchronization of ibn al-Muqaffa’s idea for taqnīn with the codification of Islamic law in Indonesia. The current study aims to unravel the view of Ibn Al-Muqaffa, an Islamic figure, about taqnīn. A biographical study was conducted by doing library research, especially on Ibn Al-Muqaffa’s proposal for taqnīn. The data collection procedure was divided into three parts i.e., orientation, exploration, focus-oriented research. Biographical research is part of a qualitative study that uses data analysis techniques and literature study as the qualitative data analysis as well as content analysis through the historical and textual approach. The results of the study reveal the method of law implementation before and during the lifetime of Ibn Al-Muqaffa which could be described as chaotic, with one of the reasons was because, at the time, the court had not possessed the statute that governed the legal activities other than the Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) which was used by the judges in accepting, examining, and deciding on cases addressed to them. Therefore, every judge took a decision based on their own ijtihad (an Islamic legal term referring to independent reasoning or the thorough exertion of a jurist's mental faculty in finding a solution to a legal question). Ibn Al-Muqaffa advised the Khalifa Abu Jakfar Al-Manshur to compile the correlated legal reasonings in Islamic jurisprudence in which to be implemented and to be applied as the binding legal force in the form of statutory law which was regulated nationally and to be used as guidance by all the judges without no exception. The codification of Islamic law in Indonesia has received a constitutional status based on philosophical, sociological, and juridical reasons. The researchers closely examine three types of Islamic legal laws i.e., Act number 7 of 1989, Act number 3 of 2006, and Act number 50 of 2009 concerning Religious Courts, Act number 41 of 2004 concerning Waqf (Endowment), and Act number 21 of 2008 concerning Sharia (Islamic) Banking. Taqnīn (the codification of Islamic law) must be adjusted to demands of the present time in which it is implemented and in accordance with the specific fields of law, for example, taqnīn for Civil Law, Criminal Law, Family Law, Judicial Law, State Administrative Procedure Law, State Administrative Law, And State Finances

    Subject matter knowledge of student teachers: how does it affect their ability to teach entrepreneurship

    This study investigated 64 UPM student teachers' academic performance and their perception of their ability to teach commerce and entrepreneurship topics in the living skills syllabus. The findings show that (1) there is a significant difference between academic programmes and academic performance of the respondents, (2) entry qualifications influence academic performance of the respondents, and (3) high academic performance results in high ability to teach accounting components. This study suggests that proper selection of vocational teacher trainees should be made to ensure better living skills teachers. Selection should be based on experience in teaching living skills and satisfactory academic achievement. To produce professional teachers, teachers' subject matter knowledge should be increased by enrolling in several related courses

    An assessment of workplace skills acquired by students of vocational and technical education institutions.

    This study was performed to identify the employability skills of technical students from the Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) and Indigenous People’s Trust Council (MARA) Skills Training Institutes (IKM) in Malaysia. The study sample consisted of 850 final year trainees of IKM and ITI. The sample was chosen by a random sampling procedure from a population of 2520 students from both institutions. Trainees’ employability skills were measured using a 40 item questionnaire adapted from the Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) report. In general, the majority of the trainees possessed a moderate level of employability skills (Mean= 3.88, S.D= .49). Their basic skills were at the moderate level (Mean= 3.83, S.D= .9); thinking skills (Mean= 3.73, S.D= .56); source skills (Mean= 3.83, S.D= .57); informational (Mean= 3.61, S.D= .76); interpersonal (Mean= 3.92, S.D= .57); technical and system skills (Mean= 3.81, S.D= .67); and self-qualities (Mean= 4.14, S.D= .55). There were no significant differences of employability skills between trainees from IKM and ITI in term of gender, work experience, and between courses

    Employability skills among the students of technical and vocational training centers in Malaysia

    The purpose of this research is to investigate the level of employability skills among the students of a technical and vocational training institutions. There are about 436 final year students from the institution were chosen as a sample of this research. The data was collected by questionnaires which was adapted from Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS). Descriptive analysis and inferences such as ANOVA, and t-test were used to analyzed the data. This finding showed that the majority of the respondents are male. Most of them pursuing education in Certificate of Skills in one of these five area of specializations: art and building, electric, electronics, automotive and mechanical. The finding indicated that the employability skills among students were average. The findings also shown that there was a significant difference between employability skills and area of specializations. There were significant difference between employability skills for basic skills and informational skills and gender. The study suggests that Technical and Vocational Educational Department should provide a curriculum which includes employment element skills which are needed by the employers. The institutions and the industry should also create a compact joint-venture for students need in order to produce higher quality workers

    Validity and reliability of clothing fashion design (CFaDC) competency instrument

    This research intends to determine the validity and reliability of Clothing Fashion Design (CFaDC) Skills instrument among instructors (ITR) in Skills Training Institutes (STI). This instrument was administered on 330 instructors in STI that teaches in the field of fashion and clothing. Rasch Measurement Model and Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used to evaluate the construct validity of this instrument. The CFaDC have reached the Cronbach alpha > 0.7 for the reliability of six sub constructs of skills competency. This instrument also obtained consistent and good internal validity which were convergent and discriminant validity. The goodness-of-fit measure of CFI, IFI, TLI > 0.90 and RMSEA < 0.08 further proved the construct validity. In summary, the research findings showed that the CFaDC instrument achieved sound psychometric properties and can be used to measure the competency level of instructors in STI

    Meta-cognitive strategies and nursing students' achievement

    In the information era in which there is an increasing and rapid information change, education system needs to enable students to solve the problems of real world with their acquired skills. Meta-cognition is essential for successful learning and students can learn and use it to improve their performance. This paper was an attempt to investigate the reliability of meta-cognitive awareness inventory that is generated by Schraw and Dennison (1994) and its correlation with nursing students’ achievement in Iran. The design adopted for this study was a descriptive correlation design. To this end, 40 female university students majoring in nursing were selected as the sample. Pediatric nursing performance was measured using a test which included higher and lower order questions. The results indicated that (a) the questionnaire has acceptable internal consistency, with a Cronbach alpha coefficient of .74, (b) there was a strong, positive correlation between the two variables, r = .729, n = 40, p<0.01, with high levels of meta-cognitive awareness associated with higher levels of performance in course of pediatric nursing. In conclusion, meta-cognitive strategies may have impact on nursing performance among university students

    Kajian ini bertujuan meninjau keperluan kompetensi Rekaan Fesyen Pakaian (ReFP) agar graduan dapat menempatkan diri dalam industri fesyen. Kajian kualitatif ini menggunakan kaedah temu bual kumpulan berfokus ke atas dua kumpulan tenaga pengajar seramai 16 orang. Kesemua responden mengajar dalam bidang ReFP di Institut Latihan Kemahiran Awam (ILK) di Malaysia. Majoriti responden berpendapat kompetensi yang paling penting adalah kemahiran perdagangan/ keusahawanan, pengetahuan rekaan dan pengetahuan penilaian tekstil. Responden juga mengemukakan perubahan program yang sering berlaku menghalang mereka untuk mengaplikasikan sebahagian kompetensi yang sangat diperlukan dalam bidang fesyen. Kebanyakan kompetensi pengetahuan ini diaplikasikan secara tidak formal semasa pengajaran dan pembelajaran bergantung pada kesesuaian masa mereka. Oleh yang demikian, sewajarnya pihak yang terlibat dalam penggubalan dasar mahupun pembentukan kurikulum perlulah menjalankan kajian menyeluruh ke atas sesuatu program yang telah dijalankan sebelum membuat sebarang perubahan. Ini bertujuan agar dapat meninjau dan mengenal pasti permasalahan yang berlaku sepanjang pelaksanaan sesuatu program. Ini bertujuan menghasilkan graduan Technical Vocational Education Training (TVET) yang berkualiti, mempunyai nilai keboleh pasaran, seiring dengan perubahan teknologi dan boleti menjadi usahawan yang berjaya. Tambahan pula, mereka adalah bakal tenaga kerja yang akan menjadi tulang belakang kepada pembangunan ekonomi berpendapatan tinggi negara
