Virtual-crystal approximation that works: Locating a composition phase boundary in Pb(Zr_{1-x}Ti_3)O_3
We present a new method for modeling disordered solid solutions, based on the
virtual crystal approximation (VCA). The VCA is a tractable way of studying
configurationally disordered systems; traditionally, the potentials which
represent atoms of two or more elements are averaged into a composite atomic
potential. We have overcome significant shortcomings of the standard VCA by
developing a potential which yields averaged atomic properties. We perform the
VCA on a ferroelectric oxide, determining the energy differences between the
high-temperature rhombohedral, low-temperature rhombohedral and tetragonal
phases of Pb(Zr_{1-x}Ti_x)O_3 at x=0.5 and comparing these results to
superlattice calculations and experiment. We then use our new method to
determine the preferred structural phase at x=0.4. We find that the
low-temperature rhombohedral phase becomes the ground state at x=0.4, in

Influence of daily oral prophylactic selenium treatment on the dibutyltin dichloride (DBTC)-induced pancreatitis in rats
Dibutyltin dichloride (DBTC) is an organotin compound used as model for acute and chronic pancreatitis. Oxidative stress is one of the mechanisms of propagation of acinar cell injury in acute pancreatitis. Selenium is an essential cofactor in the antioxidant glutathione peroxidase pathway. Selenium levels are described to be subnormal in patients with acute and chronic pancreatitis. The aim of our studies was to determine the prophylactic effect of Na-selenite [5 mg kg-1 body weight (b.w.) per os (p.o.) 7 days] on the pathogenesis and course of DBTCinduced pancreatitis. Male inbred rats (LEW-1W Charles River) of 150 g body weight were used in this study.
Experimental pancreatitis was induced by intravenous administration of 6 mg kg-1 b.w. DBTC in rats. Na-selenite was administered as daily oral dose of 5 mg kg-1 b.w. 7 days before induction of DBTC-pancreatitis. Malondialdehyde (MDA) was measured for monitoring levels of oxidative stress. Elimination of DBTC was reflected as tin concentration in bile and urine. Organ changes were indicated by serum parameters as well as histology. A prophylactic Na-selenite application significantly diminished MDA- and bilirubin concentration in serum, activities of lipase and transaminases as well as organ injuries compared to DBTC- treated rats in the absence of Naselenite.
The prophylactic oral treatment with Na-selenite in the scope of DBTC-induced pancreatitis points to a
reduced oxidative stress characterized by diminished MDA serum levels and a milder course of pancreatitis
suggesting prophylactic substitution with Na-selenite to probably elicit beneficial effect on the clinical
outcome in patients with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
Variance Decomposition of the Continuous Assessment of Interpersonal Dynamics (CAID) system: Assessing sources of influence and reliability of observations of parent-teen interactions
The Continuous Assessment of Interpersonal Dynamics (CAID) is an observational tool that measures warmth and dominance dynamics in real time and is sensitive to individual, dyadic, and contextual influences. Parent-adolescent interpersonal dynamics, which conceptually map onto parenting styles, are an integral part of positive adolescent adjustment and protect against risky outcomes. The current study’s goal was to test the degree to which sources of influence on CAID data observed in a previous study of married couples generalize to a sample of parent-adolescent dyads. We examined data from ten raters who rated moment-to-moment warmth and dominance using CAID in a sample of 61 parent-adolescent dyads (N = 122) who were largely non-Hispanic White (62%) or African American (30%) based on parent report (adolescent M age = 14; 57% female). Dyads interacted in four different discussion segments (situations). We applied Generalizability Theory to delineate several sources of variance in CAID parameters and estimated within and between-person reliability. Results revealed a number of different influences, including the person, kinsperson (adolescent versus parent), dyad, rater, situation, and interactions among these factors, on ratings of parent-adolescent interpersonal behavior. These results largely replicate results from married couples, suggesting that the factors that influence ratings of interpersonal interactions largely generalize across sample types
Disseminated \u3ci\u3eLeishmania infantum\u3c/i\u3e infection in two sibling foxhounds due to possible vertical transmission
Two sibling foxhounds born to a Leishmania seropositive bitch were presented after testing seropositive for Leishmania. Leishmania infantum infection was detected via histopathology, culture, and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (q-PCR). This is the first report of natural infection with Leishmania infantum with the possibility for vertical transmission in North America.

Deux chiots Fox hound d’une même portée nés d’une mère séropositive à Leishmania ont été présentés après un contrôle sérologique positif. Une infection à Leishmania infantum a été détectée par histopathologie, culture et amplification en chaîne par polymérase quantitative (ACP-q). Il s’agit du premier rapport d’infection naturelle par Leishmania infantum possiblement relié à une transmission verticale en Amérique du Nord
A Geometric Formulation of Quantum Stress Fields
We present a derivation of the stress field for an interacting quantum system
within the framework of local density functional theory. The formulation is
geometric in nature and exploits the relationship between the strain tensor
field and Riemannian metric tensor field. Within this formulation, we
demonstrate that the stress field is unique up to a single ambiguous parameter.
The ambiguity is due to the non-unique dependence of the kinetic energy on the
metric tensor. To illustrate this formalism, we compute the pressure field for
two phases of solid molecular hydrogen. Furthermore, we demonstrate that
qualitative results obtained by interpreting the hydrogen pressure field are

Random data wave equations
Nowadays we have many methods allowing to exploit the regularising properties
of the linear part of a nonlinear dispersive equation (such as the KdV
equation, the nonlinear wave or the nonlinear Schroedinger equations) in order
to prove well-posedness in low regularity Sobolev spaces. By well-posedness in
low regularity Sobolev spaces we mean that less regularity than the one imposed
by the energy methods is required (the energy methods do not exploit the
dispersive properties of the linear part of the equation). In many cases these
methods to prove well-posedness in low regularity Sobolev spaces lead to
optimal results in terms of the regularity of the initial data. By optimal we
mean that if one requires slightly less regularity then the corresponding
Cauchy problem becomes ill-posed in the Hadamard sense. We call the Sobolev
spaces in which these ill-posedness results hold spaces of supercritical
regularity.
More recently, methods to prove probabilistic well-posedness in Sobolev
spaces of supercritical regularity were developed. More precisely, by
probabilistic well-posedness we mean that one endows the corresponding Sobolev
space of supercritical regularity with a non degenerate probability measure and
then one shows that almost surely with respect to this measure one can define a
(unique) global flow. However, in most of the cases when the methods to prove
probabilistic well-posedness apply, there is no information about the measure
transported by the flow. Very recently, a method to prove that the transported
measure is absolutely continuous with respect to the initial measure was
developed. In such a situation, we have a measure which is quasi-invariant
under the corresponding flow.

Childhood neurodevelopment after prescription of maintenance methadone for opioid dependency in pregnancy:a systematic review and meta-analysis
Aim:
To systematically review and meta‐analyse studies of neurodevelopmental outcome of children born to mothers prescribed methadone in pregnancy.
Method:
MEDLINE, Embase, and PsycINFO were searched for studies published from 1975 to 2017 reporting neurodevelopmental outcomes in children with prenatal methadone exposure.
Results:
Forty‐one studies were identified (2283 participants). Eight studies were amenable to meta‐analysis: at 2 years the Mental Development Index weighted mean difference of children with prenatal methadone exposure compared with unexposed infants was −4.3 (95% confidence interval [CI] −7.24 to −1.63), and the Psychomotor Development Index weighted mean difference was −5.42 (95% CI −10.55 to −0.28). Seven studies reported behavioural scores and six found scores to be lower among methadone‐exposed children. Twelve studies reported visual outcomes: nystagmus and strabismus were common; five studies reported visual evoked potentials of which four described abnormalities. Factors that limited the quality of some studies, and introduced risk of bias, included absence of blinding, small sample size, high attrition, uncertainty about polydrug exposure, and lack of comparison group validity.
Interpretation:
Children born to mothers prescribed methadone in pregnancy are at risk of neurodevelopmental problems but risk of bias limits inference about harm. Research into management of opioid use disorder in pregnancy should include evaluation of childhood neurodevelopmental outcome
Prebiotic-Induced Anti-tumor Immunity Attenuates Tumor Growth
Growing evidence supports the importance of gut microbiota in the control of tumor growth and response to therapy. Here, we select prebiotics that can enrich bacterial taxa that promote anti-tu- mor immunity. Addition of the prebiotics inulin or mucin to the diet of C57BL/6 mice induces anti-tu- mor immune responses and inhibition of BRAF mutant melanoma growth in a subcutaneously implanted syngeneic mouse model. Mucin fails to inhibit tumor growth in germ-free mice, indicating that the gut microbiota is required for the activation of the anti-tumor immune response. Inulin and mucin drive distinct changes in the microbiota, as inulin, but not mucin, limits tumor growth in synge- neic mouse models of colon cancer and NRAS mutant melanoma and enhances the efficacy of a MEK inhibitor against melanoma while delaying the emergence of drug resistance. We highlight the importance of gut microbiota in anti-tumor immunity and the potential therapeutic role for prebiotics in this process
Measures on Banach Manifolds and Supersymmetric Quantum Field Theory
We show how to construct measures on Banach manifolds associated to
supersymmetric quantum field theories. These measures are mathematically
well-defined objects inspired by the formal path integrals appearing in the
physics literature on quantum field theory. We give three concrete examples of
our construction. The first example is a family of measures on a
space of functions on the two-torus, parametrized by a polynomial (the
Wess-Zumino-Landau-Ginzburg model). The second is a family \mu_\cG^{s,t} of
measures on a space \cG of maps from to a Lie group (the
Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten model). Finally we study a family
of measures on the product of a space of connection s on the trivial principal
bundle with structure group on a three-dimensional manifold with a
space of \fg-valued three-forms on
We show that these measures are positive, and that the measures
\mu_\cG^{s,t} are Borel probability measures. As an application we show that
formulas arising from expectations in the measures \mu_\cG^{s,1} reproduce
formulas discovered by Frenkel and Zhu in the theory of vertex operator
algebras. We conjecture that a similar computation for the measures

Co-transplantation of Human Embryonic Stem Cell-derived Neural Progenitors and Schwann Cells in a Rat Spinal Cord Contusion Injury Model Elicits a Distinct Neurogenesis and Functional Recovery
Co-transplantation of neural progenitors (NPs) with Schwann cells (SCs) might be a way to overcome low rate of neuronal differentiation of NPs following transplantation in spinal cord injury (SCI) and the improvement of locomotor recovery. In this study, we initially generated NPs from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) and investigated their potential for neuronal differentiation and functional recovery when co-cultured with SCs in vitro and co-transplanted in a rat acute model of contused SCI. Co-cultivation results revealed that the presence of SCs provided a consistent status for hESC-NPs and recharged their neural differentiation toward a predominantly neuronal fate. Following transplantation, a significant functional recovery was
observed in all engrafted groups (NPs, SCs, NPs+SCs) relative to the vehicle and control groups.
We also observed that animals receiving co-transplants established a better state as assessed with
the BBB functional test. Immunohistofluorescence evaluation five weeks after transplantation
showed invigorated neuronal differentiation and limited proliferation in the co-transplanted
group when compared to the individual hESC-NPs grafted group. These findings have
demonstrated that the co-transplantation of SCs with hESC-NPs could offer a synergistic effect,
promoting neuronal differentiation and functional recovery
