Demanding followers, empowered leaders : dance as an “embodied metaphor” for leader-follower-ship

    Get PDF
In this paper, we explore how leadership and followership are relational, mutually constructed and mutually enabled. Using dancesport as metaphor and medium, we focus on the embodied, corporeal aspects and dynamics of leading and following, relating them to lead/follow roles and tasks of people in organizations. In a mainly autoethnographic exploration of the lived experiences of people in leader-follower-relationships, we use the concept of embodied cognition as a basis and argue that dance can provide a vehicle for immediate, implicit “insights” and even “aha effects” through sensory, bodily experiences

Parental Perceptions of the Diagnostic Process for Autism Spectrum Disorder in British Columbia

    Get PDF
In 2014, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the incidence of autism had reached a prevalence rate of 1 out of every 68 children. This increase means that more families have experienced the difficult Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnostic process. Although research on parental perspectives of the ASD diagnostic process is almost 2 decades old, to date, there have been no studies conducted in Canada comparing parental experiences between the private and government-funded assessment routes. Research in general has shown that parents are generally dissatisfied with the ASD diagnosis process. The theoretical foundation for this study is Hochbaum\u27s health belief model that states that variations in a family\u27s health-related decisions are based upon their perceptions of acceptance of the diagnosis, impact of the disorder, benefits and barriers of treatment, and their self-efficacy. The purpose of this correlational study was to examine critically the relationship between parental satisfaction prior to, during, and after the assessment with the type of diagnostic process (government funded or private) that parents chose, as measured by the Parent Perceptions Survey. The study sample consisted of 63 British Columbia parents with children under the age of 6 who were diagnosed with autism. The results of this study indicated that the 3 hypotheses were not supported. The only factor that mattered regarding parental satisfaction of an ASD assessment was the wait time. The implications for social change include practitioner and policy-level recommendations to provide parents a more positive experience when receiving a diagnosis of ASD and to decrease the lengthy ASD assessment waitlists to improve equal access for all families

Feeling your way forward : questions about autoethnography, embodiment and sensemaking

    Get PDF
This paper tells the story of a journey of inquiry, which has turned into a journey of research, through the lens of collaborative autoethnographic work, connecting work lives, private lives, dance lives, a journey in time (nearly two decades) but also in spaces (dancefloors, universities, other organisations). It connects dance competitions with organisational life, dance performance with organisational performance, leader-follower-ship on the dancefloor with leader-follower-ship in organisations (Matzdorf 2005, Matzdorf & Sen 2005, Matzdorf & Sen 2014), but also reflection on dance with reflection on work and reflection on relationships in general (and how to make them work). The authors describe and reflect upon layers of mutual influence between work, life in organizations and dance

A generic multi-flex-body dynamics, controls simulation tool for space station

    Get PDF
An order (n) multiflex body Space Station simulation tool is introduced. The flex multibody modeling is generic enough to model all phases of Space Station from build up through to Assembly Complete configuration and beyond. Multibody subsystems such as the Mobile Servicing System (MSS) undergoing a prescribed translation and rotation are also allowed. The software includes aerodynamic, gravity gradient, and magnetic field models. User defined controllers can be discrete or continuous. Extensive preprocessing of 'body by body' NASTRAN flex data is built in. A significant aspect, too, is the integrated controls design capability which includes model reduction and analytic linearization

    Dance, leadership and space

    Get PDF
This paper aims to ‘unpick’ the spatial elements of leadership and followership in competitive ballroom dancing and to explore how they relate to organizational life. To explain and underpin this relational field, the authors use examples from their own learning journeys, both as amateur dancers and in their professional roles

    Get PDF
In Indonesia, the problems of pregnant women and newborns have not been resolved. The reason is that there is no monitoring system for pregnant women and newborns. This study aims to build a monitoring system for pregnant women and newborns. The monitoring system that will be made is mobile-based that can monitor and provide information about the health of pregnant women and children. The model used to create an information system uses the waterfall model. Meanwhile, to test the system built using the Blackbox test model. The plan that was created was tested directly to the user. As a result, the sequence in the waterfall model is proven to build a monitoring system for pregnant women and newborns. The black box model also showed if the built system did not have errors and was ready to be used. Combining the waterfall and BlackBox models results in a monitoring system for pregnant women and newborns whose entire menu can be used properly. The test was carried out on 25 pregnant women users, and it was found that the accumulated ratings were 89, 87, 88, and 89%. In this case, it is classified as Very Eligible. In Indonesia, the problems of pregnant women and newborns have not been resolved. The transdermal drug delivery system is widely accepted due to its numerous advantages as it is a non-invasive drug administration process with prolonged therapeutic effect, reduced side effects, improved bioavailability, better patient compliance, and easy termination of drug therapy. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Diclofenac sodium, Lornoxicam, Aceclofenac, Ibuprofen, antihypertensive drugs, for example, Repaglinide, Atenolol, and Antiviral agents such as Stavudine, zidovudine represents the most commonly used medications for the treatment of pain and inflammatory reaction but various side effects can limit their use. Therefore, transdermal delivery of these drugs has advantages of avoiding hepatic first-pass effect, gastric irritation and delivering the drug for an extended period of time at a sustained level. The present article mainly focuses on the work been done on these drugs by formulated and delivered as transdermal patches to decrease the side effects related to the oral delivery
