    Aerodynamic measurements concerned with a turret model

    An experimental investigation was carried out in the 14 by 14 ft Ames transonic wind tunnel on a turret model. The aerodynamic parameters measured were steady and unsteady pressures (static and total fluid pressures), local mean velocities, and local mean densities at selected locations along the optical beam path for the azimuth look angles of 90, 120, and 150 degrees from the turret. The test stream Mach numbers considered are 0.55, 0.65 and 0.75, and the Reynolds number per meter is in the range of 10 million. The results indicate that severe optical degradation can be expected at aft look azimuth, angles, this degradation in optical performance increases as the azimuth angle is increased. The ratio of rms static pressure to the local mean static pressure peaks in the range of 0.07 to 0.12 and the ratio of rms total pressure to the local mean total pressure peaks in the range of 0.02 to 0.04. These values depend on the Mach number and the aft look azimuth angle. The scale lengths obtained from correlation considerations are also presented

    From exotic phases to microscopic Hamiltonians

    We report recent analytical progress in the quest for spin models realising exotic phases. We focus on the question of `reverse-engineering' a local, SU(2) invariant S=1/2 Hamiltonian to exhibit phases predicted on the basis of effective models, such as large-N or quantum dimer models. This aim is to provide a point-of-principle demonstration of the possibility of constructing such microscopic lattice Hamiltonians, as well as to complement and guide numerical (and experimental) approaches to the same question. In particular, we demonstrate how to utilise peturbed Klein Hamiltonians to generate effective quantum dimer models. These models use local multi-spin interactions and, to obtain a controlled theory, a decoration procedure involving the insertion of Majumdar-Ghosh chainlets on the bonds of the lattice. The phases we thus realise include deconfined resonating valence bond liquids, a devil's staircase of interleaved phases which exhibits Cantor deconfinement, as well as a three-dimensional U(1) liquid phase exhibiting photonic excitations.Comment: Invited talk at Peyresq Workshop on "Effective models for low-dimensional strongly correlated systems".     Pressure and temperature fields associated with aero-optics tests

    The experimental investigation carried out in a 6 x 6 ft wind tunnel on four model configurations in the aero-optics series of tests are described. The data obtained on the random pressures (static and total pressures) and total temperatures are presented. In addition, the data for static pressure fluctuations on the Coelostat turret model are presented. The measurements indicate that the random pressures and temperature are negligible compared to their own mean (or steady state) values for the four models considered, thus allowing considerable simplification in the calculations to obtain the statistical properties of the density field. In the case of the Coelostat model tests these simplifications cannot be assumed a priori and require further investigation

    Surface pressure fluctuations in hypersonic turbulent boundary layers

    The surface pressure fluctuations on a flat plate model at hypersonic Mach numbers of 5.2, 7.4 and 10.4 with an attached turbulent boundary layer were measured using flush mounted small piezoelectric sensors. A high frequency resolution of the pressure field was achieved using specially designed small piezoelectric sensors that had a good frequency response well above 300 KHz. The RMS pressures and non-dimensional energy spectra for all above Mach numbers are presented. The convective velocities, obtained from space time correlation considerations are equal to 0.7 U sub infinity. The results indicate the RMS pressures vary from 5 to 25 percent of the mean static pressures. The ratios of RMS pressure to dynamic pressure are less than the universally accepted subsonic value of 6 x 10/3. The ratio decreases in value as the Mach number or the dynamic pressure is increased. The ratio of RMS pressure to wall shear for Mach number 7.4 satisfies one smaller than or equal to p/tau sub w smaller than or equal to three

    MTHFR A1298C polymorphism and idiopathic male infertility

    Background: DNA methylation is an important epigenetic feature of DNA that plays a pivotal role in gene expression regulation during spermatogenesis. The enzyme methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) catalyses the formation of folate intermediates that are vital for DNA synthesis and methylation reactions. C677T and A1298C variants of MTHFR result in reduced plasma folate and increase the susceptibility to various multifactorial disorders. We have already shown that homozygosity for 677 (C ®T) mutation in the MTHFR gene, is a risk factor for idiopathic male infertility in an Indian population. Aim: Recently, we showed that homozygosity for the 677(C;T) mutation in the MTHFR gene is a risk factor for idiopathic male infertility and now we aim to assess whether the A1298C mutation in the same gene is an additional risk factor for idiopathic male infertility in an Indian population. Setting and Designs : In a case-control study 151 idiopathic male infertile patients and 140 healthy fertile control individuals were recruited from the University hospital and infertility clinics in Varanasi city, India. Materials and Methods: Genotyping for A1298C change of the MTHFR gene was done by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. Statistical Analysis : Allele frequencies were calculated using Fisher's exact test. Odds ratio was calculated as the measure of the association between the MTHFR genotype and idiopathic male infertility. Results : The homozygous (C/C) A1298C polymorphism of the MTHFR gene was present at a statistically high significance in idiopathic azoospermic infertile men (OR=3.4494, CI: 1.0092 to 11.7899, P<0.05). Conclusion : The MTHFR 1298CC genotype is an additional genetic risk factor for idiopathic male infertility in an Indian population

    Beliefs in Decision-Making Cascades

    This work explores a social learning problem with agents having nonidentical noise variances and mismatched beliefs. We consider an NN-agent binary hypothesis test in which each agent sequentially makes a decision based not only on a private observation, but also on preceding agents' decisions. In addition, the agents have their own beliefs instead of the true prior, and have nonidentical noise variances in the private signal. We focus on the Bayes risk of the last agent, where preceding agents are selfish. We first derive the optimal decision rule by recursive belief update and conclude, counterintuitively, that beliefs deviating from the true prior could be optimal in this setting. The effect of nonidentical noise levels in the two-agent case is also considered and analytical properties of the optimal belief curves are given. Next, we consider a predecessor selection problem wherein the subsequent agent of a certain belief chooses a predecessor from a set of candidates with varying beliefs. We characterize the decision region for choosing such a predecessor and argue that a subsequent agent with beliefs varying from the true prior often ends up selecting a suboptimal predecessor, indicating the need for a social planner. Lastly, we discuss an augmented intelligence design problem that uses a model of human behavior from cumulative prospect theory and investigate its near-optimality and suboptimality.Comment: final version, to appear in IEEE Transactions on Signal Processin
