Radiative capture of polarized neutrons by polarized protons
A model-independent irreducible tensor approach to p(n,gamma)d is presented
and an explicit form for the spin-structure of the matrix for the reaction is
obtained in terms of the Pauli spin-matrices for the neutron and the proton.
Expressing the multipole amplitudes in terms of the triplet --> triplet and
singlet --> triplet transitions, we point out how the initial singlet and
triplet contributions to the differential cross section can be determined
empirically.Comment: Revised version; typeset using RevTeX4; 6 pages, no figure
Phase ambiguity of the threshold amplitude in pp -> pp\pi^0
Measurements of spin observables in pp -> {\vec p}{\vec p}\pi^0 are suggested
to remove the phase ambiguity of the threshold amplitude. The suggested
measurements complement the IUCF data on {\vec p}{\vec p} -> pp\pi^0 to
completely determine all the twelve partial wave amplitudes, taken into
consideration by Mayer et.al. [15] and Deepak, Haidenbauer and Hanhart [20].Comment: 4 pages, 1 table
Rare occurrence of Japanese bigeye Pristigenys niphonia (Cuvier 1829), off Malabar Coast
The family Priacanthidae commonly inhabit rocky
areas and reefs, although a few are known to inhabit
open waters. Priacanthas are typically colored bright
red, but some have patterns in silver, dusky brown,
or black. They have unusually large eyes, suited to
their habitat in deeper waters. Pristigenys is one
of the genera of Priacanthidae and comprises of 3
species
Project PEACH at UCLH: Student Projects in Healthcare Computing
A collaboration between clinicians at UCLH and the Dept of Computer Science at UCL is giving students of computer science the opportunity to undertake real healthcare computing projects as part of their education. This is enabling the creation of a significant research computing platform within the Trust, based on open source components and hosted in the cloud, while providing a large group of students with experience of the specific challenges of health IT

Relationship between post-awakening salivary cortisol and melatonin secretion in healthy participants
We report the relationship between patterns of post-awakening salivary melatonin and cortisol secretion in healthy participants (n=51; mean age 21.6 ±5.0 years). Saliva samples were collected within the domestic setting, at 0-, 15-, 30-, and 45-min post-awakening on 2 consecutive typical weekdays. Analyses were undertaken on data with electronically verified sample timing accuracy (55-min delay between awakening and the start of saliva sampling). Melatonin secretion declined linearly by an average of 29% within the first 45-min post-awakening. In contrast, there was a marked 112% surge in cortisol, characteristic of the cortisol awakening response. No day differences in melatonin or cortisol secretion were observed but melatonin concentrations were lower with later awakening. Despite contrasting post-awakening changes in these hormones, there was a lack of relationship between overall levels or patterns of melatonin and cortisol during this period
Production and growth of cultchless oyster spat of Crassostrea madrasensis (Preston) for single oyster culture
In India, edible oyster (Crassostrea madrasensis)
farming is being practised by several farmers in
central Kerala employing the rack and ren method
in the estuaries and backwaters. However, farmed
oysters do not find ready marketability due to the
high labour costs involved in handling and shucking.
The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute,
Cochin, Kerala, has developed the hatchery
technology for edible oyster spat production, both
cultched and cultchless. Nevertheless, these have
not been commercialised due to the fact that spat
collection from wild is still the most feasible option in
oyster farming. The aim of the present study was to
produce cultchless spat in the farm site itself and
rear it to commercial size for harvesting uniform sized
regular, rounded single oysters
Mathematical model for predicting solidification and cooling of steel inside mould and in air
A two-dimensional mathematical model has been developed to describe the solidification and cooling of steel inside the mould after teeming and in the air after stripping. Partial differential equations describing the processes have been discretized using control volume approach. The discretization equations obtained are of Tri-diagonal
matrix form, which have been solved using well known Tri-diagonal matrix algorithm (TDMA) and Alternate direction implicit (ADI) solver. The model has been validated by measuring surface temperatures of mould and ingot using Infrared thermo-vision scanner. This is then used to compute charging temperature and solidification status of
ingot as function of track time and type of ingot
