Effect of oxidizing concentration on the corrosion resistance of the cerium conversion coating on galvanized steel

Ce-based conversion films have been assessed as alternatives for replacement of Cr6+-based films,which have been forbidden for their toxicity and carcinogenic properties. However, corrosion protection associated with chromate films is difficult to achieve by other surface treatments. Experimental results have revealed that to obtain the highly satisfactory results provided by chromate-based conversion coatings, it is necessary to improve the anticorrosive properties of the new chromium-free coatings. The present work deals with the effect of the oxidant concentration in the cerium-based conversion baths on the corrosion resistance of the films deposited on galvanized steel. Electrogalvanized steel sheets were exposed to cerium chloride-based baths with different concentrations of oxidant for a minute. The surface of the treated samples was analyzed by XPS and SEM-EDXS, while its corrosion resistance was investigated using electrochemical tests (EIS) conducted in a 0.05 M NaCl solution and the impedance spectra evolution analyzed as a function of the exposure time. The results showed a direct relationship between oxidant concentration and corrosion resistance. When the oxidant concentration rose from2mL.L-1 to 12mL.L-1, the corrosion resistance increased about 5 times, and this was attributed to the decrease in the Ce3+/Ce4+ relationship of the conversion film.Fil: Culcasi, José Daniel. Using modern technologies in educational counselling in high schools in Spain: web application e-portfolio

No doubt, the students’ diversity in each compulsory educational stage requires specific measures to be implemented. Due to the dissemination of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and the Virtual Learning Environments (VLE) worldwide, teachers and counsellors can use these technological resources to help students’ learning disabilities. Technological achievements may be useful in psychological counselling. Training coordinators, who carry out counselling, can make use of these technological resources to offer students support in their life-long learning process. In this article the authors try to examine how ICT & VLE can help when developing counselling in Secondary Education in Spain. This paper shows the results obtained through a multiple case study conducted in 10 High Schools, assuming quantitative and qualitative methodology. The results indicate the e-portfolio has proof to be an effective tool allowing the assessment of the students’ teaching-learning processes, helping in the process of guidance and school counselling

A case study for the design and development of pedagogical awareness in the Teacher Training Master's Degree: didactic strategies and methodology

Roughly speaking, the European Higher Education Area introduced substantial changes in the structure and development of new curricula. Particularly, when assuming the teaching-learning processes in the Master’s Degree, special attention needs to be carried out to the students’ achievements. Since 2010, the Faculty of Education in the University of Zaragoza implemented the Master in Teacher Training for High School Teachers. One of the main aims is to provide students with the necessary pedagogical knowledge, strategies and procedures to be able to develop professionally. We want to accompany in students’ development, the acquisition of teaching techniques and methodologies, including methodology specific for age of youth, the teachers will be working with. This issue was showed in presented text. The authors pictured, among others, the methods, activities and objectives designed to help students achieve the learning outcomes in the Master’s compulsory Module entitled “Context of the Teaching Task”

Role of quorum sensing in UVA-induced biofilm formation in Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a versatile bacterium present in terrestrial and aquatic environments and a relevant opportunistic human pathogen, is largely known for the production of robust biofilms. The unique properties of these structures complicate biofilm eradication, because they make the biofilms very resistant to diverse antibacterial agents. Biofilm development and establishment is a complex process regulated by multiple regulatory genetic systems, among them is quorum sensing (QS), a mechanism employed by bacteria to regulate gene transcription in response to population density. In addition, environmental factors such as UVA radiation (400–315 nm) have been linked to biofilm formation. In this work, we further investigate the mechanism underlying the induction of biofilm formation by UVA, analysing the role of QS in this phenomenon. We demonstrate that UVA induces key genes of the Las and Rhl QS systems at the transcriptional level. We also report that pelA and pslA genes, which are essential for biofilm formation and whose transcription depends in part on QS, are significantly induced under UVA exposure. Finally, the results demonstrate that in a relA strain (impaired for ppGpp production), the UVA treatment does not induce biofilm formation or QS genes, suggesting that the increase of biofilm formation due to exposure to UVA in P. aeruginosa could rely on a ppGpp-dependent QS induction.Fil: Pezzoni, Magdalena.
