Maquila y sindicatos en Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila

In this article, I discuss the preference of the border cities to establish maquiladoras on the Northern border of Mexico. In spite of the option to locate anywhere in the country. Through an analysis of ciudad Acuña, in the State of Coahuila, I outline how the local government and entrerpreneurs have made maquiladora industry the main economy activity of the city. I emphasize how the geographical location of the city and the weakeness of unions have been important factors behind maquilador expansion. On the other hand, although there are excellent expectatives for this industry in ciudad Acuña, according to managers, I argue that some characteristics of this industry and local labor that question the future maquiladora development.Este artículo muestra la continuidad en la preferencia de las ciudades fronterizas, a pesar de poder establecerse en cualquier país, para la instalación de maquiladoras. A través del análisis de Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, el trabajo muestra cómo el gobierno y el empresariado locales han convertido a la actividad maquiladora en el eje central de la economía acuñense en un tiempo relativamente corto. El estudio también enfatiza cómo la posición geográfica de la localidad, así como la debilitación sindical han constituido algunos de los principales componentes de este crecimiento maquilador. A pesar de éste y de las promisorias expectativas que vislumbran los empresarios en torno al futuro maquilador, el trabajo enuncia algunas características industriales y del mercado laboral local que parecen cuestionar dicho optimismo empresarial

Relaciones laborales en la maquiladora: balance y perspectivas

Este artículo analiza el tipo de relaciones laborales que ha persistido en la industria maquiladora mexicana. A través de un análisis histórico-sociológico, el trabajo distingue dos trayectorias fundamentales en las relaciones laborales de la maquila: una mediada por los sindicatos y otra sin ellos. Especialmente, se enfatiza los cambios y continuidades, avances y retrocesos en cada una de estas alternativas y postula algunas de las características que distinguirán a las relaciones laborales futuras en esta industria

Sindicatos en Ciudad Juárez: Historia y debilidad sindical

This work analyzes the evolution of the labor unions in Ciudad Juárez for three decades of the maquiladora industry. Postulates as a main idea, the existence of a weakening of the labor unions in the rnaquiladoras as a consequence of two central factors: the absence of a labor union trajectory in the region, and the persistence of economical activities in Ciudad Juárez that depend on the American economy, and the existence of a factionalism inter and intralabor union in the main workers associations in the city, that has permitted the defeal of not onIy the official movements, but the independent ones too. The weakening ol the labor union. has also conducted to a policy ol apathy, conformity, and ol high colaboration with the investors, that has tumed the labor unions in Ciudad Juárez into an expression of subordinated labor unions, that legitimates their perrnanency in the rnaquiladoras are mostly to their link with investors than with their members. This article allows us to see two future sceneries in the city ol Ciudad Juárez: the accentuation of this kind of behavior in labor unions, or the disappearance ol labor unions in the maquiladoras.</p

Flexibilidad y sindicalismo

The relationship between unionism and labor flexibility is analyzed in this article. In particular, some of the modifications made in Mexican unions, as a result of the introduction of flexible schemes in the manufacturing industry, are shown. This work attempts to be a methodological exercise in the way the impact of flexibility on unions has been approached in different texts, and, taking these texts as a starting point, to summarize the most important aspects in order to understand the connection between flexibility and unionism.
