    Arterial vascularization of the colon; a guide to surgical resection

    Background. Colorectal cancer is a commonly diagnosed neoplasia in men and women worldwide. This study aims to rigorously map the arterial distribution of the colon in order to assess the implications of vascular patterns in surgical resection. Methods. Cadaveric dissections were performed to explore the arterial distribution (including collateral blood flow) of the colon. The study used standard dissection tools and photographic documentation to detail the vascular architecture supporting the large intestine. Results. The dissection revealed important arterial branches and anastomoses in the area of the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries, which are able to ensure continuous local blood supply especially in cases of arterial ischemia. An important arterial anastomosis was identified between the right branch of the middle colic artery and the ascending branch of the right colic artery, as well as the specific distribution of the marginal artery of Drummond and Haller-Riolan anastomotic arch. Conclusions. The blood supply of the colon derived from both mesenteric arteries includes redundant arterial anastomoses, but which are critical in specific situations such as the approach and results of surgical resection. Understanding these vascular patterns and collateral pathways, as well as careful intraoperative surgical exploration, are essential for oncologic surgeons to ensure successful colic resections with minimal complications and morbidity

    Automated procedure for determination of friction grip and bearing joint strength used for space missions

    This paper presents an algorithm that calculates the nominal torque for friction grip joints, followed by its implementation in a Microsoft Excel worksheet that is automated by a macro written in Visual Basic. The algorithm outputs not only the optimum nominal torque (the value for which the margin of safety is maximum) but also the interval of acceptable values so that the user can easily choose the torque according to his preferences

The bone marrow fibrosis results from excessive proliferation of fibroblasts that are influenced by several cytokines in the microenvironment, of which transforming growth factor-ÎČ (TGF-ÎČ) is the most important. Micromechanics related to the niche has not yet been elucidated. In this study, we hypothesized that mechanical stress modulates TGF-ÎČ signalling leading to further activation and subsequent proliferation and invasion of bone marrow fibroblasts, thus showing the important role of micromechanics in the development and progression of PMF, both in the bone marrow and in extramedullary sites. Using three PMF-derived fibroblast cell lines and transforming growth factor-ÎČ receptor (TGFBR) 1 and 2 knock-down PMF-derived fibroblasts, we showed that mechanical stress does stimulate the collagen synthesis by the fibroblasts in patients with myelofibrosis, through the TGFBR1, which however seems to be activated through alternative pathways, other than TGFBR2. Patients diagnosed with AMkL have low overall survival and have poor outcome to treatment, thus novel therapies such as CAR T cell therapy could represent an alternative in treating AMkL. We investigated the effect of a new CAR T cell which targets CD41, a specific surface antigen for M7-AMkL, against an in vitro model for AMkL, DAMI Luc2 cell line. The performed flow cytometry evaluation highlighted a percentage of 93.8% CAR T cells eGFP-positive and a limited acute effect on lowering the target cell population. However, the interaction between effector and target (E:T) cells, at a low ratio, lowered the cell membrane integrity, and reduced the M7-AMkL cell population after 24 h of co-culture, while the cytotoxic effect was not significant in groups with higher E:T ratio. Our findings suggest that the anti-CD41 CAR T cells are efficient for a limited time spawn and the cytotoxic effect is visible in all experimental groups with low E:T ratio.Peer reviewe

    A narrative review of central nervous system involvement in acute leukemias.

However, in a subset of cases the overall survival (OS) is still exceptionally low due to the infiltration of leukemic cells in the central nervous system (CNS) and the subsequent formation of brain tumors. The CNS involvement is more common in acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), than in adult acute myeloid leukemia (AML), although the rates for the second case might be underestimated. The main reasons for CNS invasion are related to the expression of specific adhesion molecules (VLA-4, ICAM-1, VCAM, L-selectin, PECAM-1, CD18, LFA-1, CD58, CD44, CXCL12) by a subpopulation of leukemic cells, called "sticky cells" which have the ability to interact and adhere to endothelial cells. Moreover, the microenvironment becomes hypoxic and together with secretion of VEGF-A by ALL or AML cells the permeability of vasculature in the bone marrow increases, coupled with the disruption of blood brain barrier. There is a single subpopulation of leukemia cells, called leukemia stem cells (LSCs) that is able to resist in the new microenvironment due to its high adaptability. The LCSs enter into the arachnoid, migrate, and intensively proliferate in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and consequently infiltrate perivascular spaces and brain parenchyma. Moreover, the CNS is an immune privileged site that also protects leukemic cells from chemotherapy. CD56/NCAM is the most important surface molecule often overexpressed by leukemic stem cells that offers them the ability to infiltrate in the CNS. Although asymptomatic or with unspecific symptoms, CNS leukemia should be assessed in both AML/ALL patients, through a combination of flow cytometry and cytological analysis of CSF. Intrathecal therapy (ITT) is a preventive measure for CNS involvement in AML and ALL, still much research is needed in finding the appropriate target that would dramatically lower CNS involvement in acute leukemia.     The paper intends to deal with the manner in which a religious actor, the Romanian Orthodox Church, elaborates and reproduces its public discourse about „religious pluralism”. Building on Dominique Maingueneau’s notions of „generic scene” and „scenography” the analysis uses the public declarations of the Romanian Orthodox Church’s clergy during the period 1990-2004 in order to illustrate the motivations, the instruments and the effects of a particular discursive behavior. The main hypothesis of this study is that the discourse about „religious pluralism” is a construction based on different discourses placed in an interdependent relationship, the two most important among them being the discourse about the „self” („us”) and that about „the others” („them”) due to their complementary/symbiotic connection

    Visual versus Colorimetric Data Analysis for Color Determination in Resin Veneers

    The color of natural teeth depends on their capacity to modify the incident light (to change the wave length of incident light). Mainly two types of observation modes are used: diffuse illumination 0% and 45%; the angles represent incidence of illumination and observation on the surface of the object whose color is determined. The patients have been properly selected to receive direct resin veneers on their frontal maxillary incisors. Visually we observed and determined color directly using natural incident light between 10 am and 16 pm, the observer was positioned away from patient so the tooth to examine was at the level of observer’s eye (incidence angles were mainly similar). Vita Easy Shade colorimeter was used to establish the color of the restoration before and after it was performed. The Expanded Visual Rating Scale for Appearance Match (EVRSAM) supplied statistically comparable data as the literature; the comparison between visual and colorimetric data makes us suppose that visual color determination is a necessary but not sufficient tool for the esthetic success of any veneer restoration

We show that ATL with this semantics has an undecidable model-checking problem if the semantics is also synchronous and the agents have perfect recall
