    Sweet potato is the sixth food crop in the world, containing high amounts of carbohydrates with a low glycemic index value. Sweet potatoes are easily damaged during storage, so their shelf life is short. Sweet potato processing into flour is an alternative to sweet potato preservation. Blanching and drying are two processing steps that have an impact on the quality of sweet potato flour. The study aimed to examine the effect of the blanching method and drying temperature on the quality of sweet potato flour. The study used a two-factor Completely Randomized Design. The first factor was the blanching method, which had two levels: steamed blanching and blanching by boiling. The second factor was the drying temperature of 50°, 60°, and 70°C. The results showed that sweet potatoes blanched using boiling and dried at 60°C produced good-quality sweet potato flour based on a yield value of 36.12%, carbohydrates of 70.44%, bulk density of 0.52 g/mL, moisture content of 0.34% and ash content of 3.3%. The assessment results of the color and aroma of sweet potato flour using the scoring method produced a yellowish-white flour color (score of 3.53) and a slightly distinctive aroma of flour (score of 3.46)

    Das dieser Dokumentation zugrundeliegende Projekt ist in mehrfacher Hinsicht un­gewöhnlich. So ist die videografische Begleitung einer sechsten Gymnasialklasse ĂŒber eine Woche in elf ihrer UnterrichtsfĂ€cher und in einer Klassenleiterinnenstunde allein von der praktischen DurchfĂŒhrung her ein ambitioniertes Vorhaben. Es ist zudem bemerkenswert, dass die Eltern der Kinder dem zugestimmt haben und auch nahezu alle LehrkrĂ€fte fĂŒr dieses Vorhaben gewonnen werden konnten. Und ist es nicht auch etwas Besonderes, dass sich ĂŒber 40 Kolleginnen und Kollegen aus den Bildungswis­senschaften und den verschiedenen Fachdidaktiken einer UniversitĂ€t bereit erklĂ€rt haben, sich an diesem Vorhaben zu beteiligen? Es ist ein gutes Zeichen dafĂŒr, dass sich die Lehrerbildner/innen an einer UniversitĂ€t mit Mut zu einer ungewöhnlichen, ge­meinsamen Forschung zusammengefunden haben

    Chemie im Kontext – a symbiotic implementation of a context-based teaching and learning approach

    Chemie im Kontext (ChiK) is a project which aims at the improvement of chemistry teaching at secondary school in Germany. Based on a framework, which was derived from theories and empirical data on the teaching and learning of science, science education researchers and teachers work together on learning communities to transform this framework into teaching and learning practice. Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and the participating federal states, such learning communities have developed and tried units for almost all topics for the upper and lower secondary education. The accompanying research studies show different effects on students' motivation: The ChiK units point out the relevance of chemistry, but the student-oriented learning approach can also lead to a feeling of getting lost in the context. One reason might be seen in the result that teachers have put more emphasis on the realisation of a good context than on the second important principle of ChiK: the development of basic concepts. However, data also showed that the learning communities have indeed inspired and supported the teachers to change their teaching towards a more context-based and student-oriented teaching. The continuing work will now especially focus on the improvement of facilitating the students with a better guideline, and on the development and assessment of different science competencies

    Investigation of European shot-hole borer, Xyleborus dispar (Coleoptera, Scolytidae), in apple orchards of Latvia

    European shot-hole borer is known to occur on a wide range of deciduous trees and frequently found on fruit trees in most of the Holarctic. During the last years increased activity of this beetle contributed necessity for investigation of it in apple orchards of Latvia. Because of the latent behavior it is difficult to control distribution of Xyleborus dispar. Often insecticides are not effective, especially if not used in an appropriate time and methods of integrated or biological plant protection are needed. In the current study, results of two year monitoring of X. dispar flying activity and effectiveness of two types of sticky traps, Rebell Rosso and Csalomon Palx, bitted with 50% alcohol are presented. Four traps of each type were placed in each orchard at the beginning of May in 2013 and at the middle of April in 2014. Differences among respective orchards were recorded: the highest number of beetles was found in the largest orchard surrounded by wide deciduous forests; the lowest number was recorded in the orchard surrounded by the agricultural lands. The first emerging X. dispar female was caught at the middle of April. During the vegetation season the highest flying activity of beetles was at the end of April - beginning of May (17th – 18th week). Afterwards number and flying activity of beetles decreased and at the middle of June (25th – 26th week) reached zero. In orchard with the highest number of European shot-hole borer, significantly higher number of beetles was recorded on Rebell Rosso traps; for the rest two orchards higher number of X. dispar was recorded on Csalomon Palx traps
