Effects of urbanisation and landscape heterogeneity mediated by feeding guild and body size in a community of coprophilous beetles
Although the impacts of urbanisation on biodiversity are well studied, the precise response of some invertebrate groups remains poorly known. Dung-associated beetles are little studied in an urban context, especially in temperate regions. We considered how landscape heterogeneity, assessed at three spatial scales (250, 500 and 1000 metre radius), mediates the community composition of coprophilous beetles on a broad urban gradient. Beetles were sampled using simple dung-baited traps, placed at 48 sites stratified across three distance bands around a large urban centre in England. The most urban sites hosted the lowest abundance of saprophagous beetles, with a lower mean body length relative to the least urban sites. Predicted overall species richness and the richness of saprophagous species were also lowest at the most urban sites. Ordination analyses followed by variation partitioning revealed that landscape heterogeneity across the urban gradient explained a small but significant proportion of community composition. Heterogeneity data for a 500-metre radius around each site provided the best fit with beetle community data. Larger saprophagous species were associated with lower amounts of manmade surface and improved grassland. Some individual species, particularly predators, appeared to be positively associated with urban or urban fringe sites. This study is probably the first to examine the response of the whole coprophilous beetle community to urbanisation. Our results suggest that the response of this community to urbanisation matches expectations based on other taxonomic groups, whilst emphasising the complex nature of this response, with some smaller-bodied species potentially benefitting from urbanisation
Experimental and Analytical Investigation of the Transonic and Supersonic Divergence Characteristics of a Delta-Plan-Form All- Movable Control
The static aeroelastic divergence characteristics of a delta-planform model of the canard control surface of a proposed air-to-ground missile have been studied both analytically and experimentally in the Mach number range from 0.6 to 3.0. The experiments indicated that divergence occurred at a nearly constant value of dynamic pressure at Mach numbers up to 1.2. At higher Mach numbers somewhat higher values of dynamic pressure were required to produce divergence. The analysis and the experiment indicate that the camber stiffness of the control surface and the stiffness of the control actuator are both important in divergence of surfaces of this type
A shuttle development flight test vehicle study
A study is presented that identifies the potential performance capability of the production shuttle orbiter for powered flight tests using several propulsion systems following vertical takeoff and using J-2 rocket engines following air launch. Of the approaches considered, the air-launched orbiter equipped with J-2 rocket engines appeared to have the highest potential for early shuttle development flights. With this approach, mach 4 appeared attainable using 45.5K kg (100K lb) of internal propellant. Several issues were identified that require resolution to prove feasibility

CO J = 3-2 and J = 2-1 spectroscopy and mapping of ten high velocity molecular outflow sources
The authors have mapped high velocity outflows associated with the sources K3-50, CRL 2591, W3, S88, NGC 2264, NGC 2024, S140, G 35.2-0.74, NGC 1333 (HH 7-11), and NGC 1333 (IRAS 1) in the J = 2-1 and J = 3-2 transitions of CO. The line core and wing excitation properties are discussed in detail, and an approximate relation dv/dr ≅ 2.5×10-4n (H2)3/2km s-1 pc-1 determined, whereby most of the nebulae appear to depart considerably from the régime of free-fall collapse, or thermal, turbulent, and rotational stability
Anderson Localization, Non-linearity and Stable Genetic Diversity
In many models of genotypic evolution, the vector of genotype populations
satisfies a system of linear ordinary differential equations. This system of
equations models a competition between differential replication rates (fitness)
and mutation. Mutation operates as a generalized diffusion process on genotype
space. In the large time asymptotics, the replication term tends to produce a
single dominant quasispecies, unless the mutation rate is too high, in which
case the populations of different genotypes becomes de-localized. We introduce
a more macroscopic picture of genotypic evolution wherein a random replication
term in the linear model displays features analogous to Anderson localization.
When coupled with non-linearities that limit the population of any given
genotype, we obtain a model whose large time asymptotics display stable

Evaluation Research and Institutional Pressures: Challenges in Public-Nonprofit Contracting
This article examines the connection between program evaluation research and decision-making by public managers. Drawing on neo-institutional theory, a framework is presented for diagnosing the pressures and conditions that lead alternatively toward or away the rational use of evaluation research. Three cases of public-nonprofit contracting for the delivery of major programs are presented to clarify the way coercive, mimetic, and normative pressures interfere with a sound connection being made between research and implementation. The article concludes by considering how public managers can respond to the isomorphic pressures in their environment that make it hard to act on data relating to program performance.This publication is Hauser Center Working Paper No. 23. Extracolonic features of familial adenomatous polyposis in patients with sporadic colorectal cancer.
We have investigated the occurrence of attenuated extracolonic manifestations (AEMs) of familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) in patients with non-polyposis colorectal cancer. In a prospective case-control study, we observed that significantly more colorectal cancer patients exhibited AEM than did age and sex-matched controls (19.5% vs 7.5%, P < 0.004). However patients with AEMs do not have occult FAP, as we found no heterozygous adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene mutations despite extensive analysis of constitutional DNA. Genome-wide DNA replication errors (RERs) occur in a proportion of colorectal cancers, particularly right-sided lesions and in almost all tumours from hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) patients. As AEMs have been reported in familial colon cancer cases, we investigated the relationship of AEMs to tumour RER phenotype. There was indeed an excess of AEMs in patients with right-sided tumours (30.2% of 53 patients vs 14.7% of 116 patients, P < 0.03) and in those with RER tumours (3 out of 12 patients with RER tumours vs none out of 21 patients with non-RER tumours, P < 0.05). Two patients with AEM were from HNPCC families compared with none of those without AEM (P < 0.05). The association of AEMs with colorectal cancer is intriguing, and we speculate that it may be a manifestation of mutational mosaicism of the APC gene, perhaps associated with a constitutional defect in DNA mismatch pair
