    Disentangling age and metallicity in distant unresolved stellar systems

    We present some results of an observational and theoretical study on unresolved stellar systems based on the Surface Brightness Fluctuations (SBF) technique. It is shown that SBF magnitudes are a valuable tracer of stellar population properties, and a reliable distance indicator. SBF magnitudes, SBF-colors, and SBF-gradients can help to constrain within relatively narrow limits the metallicity and age of the dominant stellar component in distant stellar systems, especially if coupled with other spectro-photometric indicators.Comment: A contributed paper to the Cefalu' (Italy) "Probing Stellar Populations out to the Distant Universe", 4 pages.     Geometric phase and gauge theory structure in quantum computing

    Fatigue analysis of a post-buckled composite single-stringer specimen taking into account the local stress ratio

    The fatigue life prediction of post-buckled composite structures represents still an unresolved issue due to the complexity of the phenomenon and the high costs of experimental testing. In this paper, a novel numerical approach, called “Min-Max Load Approach”, is used to analyze the behavior of a composite single-stringer specimen with an initial skin-stringer delamination subjected to post-buckling fatigue compressive load. The proposed approach, based on cohesive zone model technique, is able to evaluate the local stress ratio during the delamination growth, performing, in a single Finite Element analysis, the simulation of the structure at the maximum and minimum load of the fatigue cycle. The knowledge of the actual value of the local stress ratio is crucial to correctly calculate the crack growth rate. At first, the specimen is analyzed under quasi-static loading conditions, then the fatigue simulation is performed. The results of the numerical analysis are compared with the data of an experimental campaign previously conducted, showing the capabilities of the proposed approach

    Monitoring the performance of residents during training in off-pump coronary surgery.

    OBJECTIVE: Control charts (eg, cumulative sum charts) plot changes in performance with time and can alert a surgeon to suboptimal performance. They were used to compare performance of off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery between a consultant and four resident surgeons and to compare performance of off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery and conventional coronary artery bypass grafting within surgeons. METHODS: Data were analyzed for consecutive patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting who were operated on by one consultant or one of four residents. Conversions were analyzed by intention to treat. Perioperative death or one or more of 10 adverse events constituted failure. Predicted risks of failure for individual patients were derived from the study population. Variable life-adjusted displays and risk-adjusted sequential probability ratio test charts were plotted. RESULTS: Data for 1372 patients were analyzed; 769 of the procedures were off-pump coronary artery bypass operations (56.0%). The consultant operated on 382 patients (293 off-pump, 76.7%), and the residents operated on 990 (474 off-pump, 47.9%). Patients operated on by residents tended to be older, more obese, more likely to require an urgent operation, and more likely to need a circumflex artery graft but less likely to have triple-vessel disease. There were 7 conversions (consultant 5, residents 2). The overall failure rate was 8.5% (9.2% for consultant's operations and 8.2% for residents' operations), including 10 deaths (0.7%). Predicted and observed risks of failure were similar for all five surgeons. After 100 off-pump coronary artery bypass operations, performance was the same or better for the residents as for the consultant. For all surgeons, performance was the same or better for off-pump as for conventional coronary artery bypass grafting. CONCLUSIONS: Off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery can be safely taught to cardiothoracic residents. Implementation of continuous performance monitoring for residents is practicable

    Detection of Surface Brightness Fluctuations in Elliptical Galaxies imaged with the Advanced Camera for Surveys. B- and I-band measurements

    Taking advantage of the exceptional capabilities of ACS on board of HST, we derive Surface Brightness Fluctuation (SBF) measurements in the B and I bands from images of six elliptical galaxies with 1500cz35001500 \leq cz \leq 3500. Given the low S/N ratio of the SBF signal in the blue band images, the reliability of the measurements is verified both with numerical simulations and experimental data tests. This paper presents the first published B- and I-band SBF measurements for distant (\geq 20 Mpc) galaxies, essential for the comparisons of the models to observations of normal ellipticals. By comparing I-band data with our new Simple Stellar Population (SSP) models we find an excellent agreement and we confirm that I-band SBF magnitudes are mainly sensitive to the metallicity of the dominant stellar component in the galaxy, and are not strongly affected by the contribution of possible secondary stellar components. As a consequence I-band fluctuations magnitudes are ideal for distance studies. On the other hand, we show that standard SSP models do not reproduce the B-band SBF magnitudes of red ((B-I)_0 \gsim 2.1) galaxies in our sample. We explore the capability of two non--canonical models in properly reproducing the high sensitivity of B SBF to the presence of even small fractions of bright, hot stars (metal poor stars, hot evolved stars, etc.). The disagreement is solved both by taking into account hot (Post--AGB) stars in SSP models and/or by adopting Composite Stellar Population models. Finally, we suggest a limit value of the S/N for the B-band SBF signal required to carry out a detailed study of stellar population properties based on this technique.Comment: ApJ accepte

    Numerical study of quasi-static and fatigue delamination growth in a post-buckled composite stiffened panel

    In this work, an approach based on the Virtual Crack Closure Technique, included in the commercial finite element code ABAQUS, is adopted to study the propagation of delamination in composite structures under quasi-static and fatigue loads. The methodology, originally capable of simulating only delamination under quasi-static loads, has recently been extended introducing the possibility to analyze damage progression under fatigue load condition. The approach is assessed on simple specimens, Double Cantilever Beam and Mixed Mode Bending test, comparing the results with literature data. Afterwards, the behavior of a single-stringer specimen with an initial delamination is numerically investigated considering compressive loading conditions. At first, the single-stringer specimen is analyzed under quasi-static compressive load showing a clear correlation between local buckling phenomena and delamination growth. Then, a cyclic compressive load is applied such that the specimen switches between pre- and post-buckling conditions in a single load cycle. The outcomes of the numerical analyses are compared with the experimental data obtained from an experimental test campaign previously performed, showing the advantages of the adopted numerical technique but also the limitations that need to be addressed to properly analyze this phenomenon
