    A replicated field experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station (ARS), Madenur located in Hassan District, Karnataka in rainy season during 2007 to assess the manurial value of by-products of bio-diesel feed stocks-pongamia and neem oil seed cakes vis-à-vis conventional plant nutrients sources (combination of farm yard manure and inorganic fertilizers) on the grain and fodder productivity of finger millet, the staple food cereal of southern Karnataka. Grain and dry fodder productivity of finger millet crop grown using pongamia and neem seedoil cakes is comparable to that grown using conventional plant nutrient sources. Application of plant nutrients only through pongamia and neem seed oil cakes resulted in higher available soil Nitrogen, Potassium and Organic Carbon contents

    Diagnostic Accuracy of MR Mammography in Comparison with Digital Mammography and Sonomammography

    Background. Even though the sensitivity of contrast-enhanced breast magnetic resonance mammography (CE-MRM) is consistently high in the range of 94-100%, conventionally, digital mammography and sonomammography continue as standard imaging modalities for the detection and evaluation of breast disease. The objective of the study was to detect additional lesions that go undetected by routine digital mammography and sonomammography using CE-MRM. Materials and Methods. In a prospective study, 68 patients who came for screening diagnostic mammogram and had breast lesions of Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System category 3-6 were evaluated. All patients underwent bilateral digital mammography and targeted high-frequency sonomammography of the primary lesion. Those patients who were thought to possibly have breast cancer and to be candidates for surgical management were offered bilateral CE-MRM. Results. In this prospective study, we included 68 patients (mean age - 50.6 years, range - 30-73 years). A total of 74 lesions were evaluated. In detecting these lesions, digital mammography had a sensitivity of 40.0%, specificity of 100% and diagnostic accuracy of 63.5%. CE-MRM sensitivity was found to be 71.7%, specificity - 96.6% and diagnostic accuracy - 83.7%. Among the 27 additional lesions detected by CE-MRM, histopathological evaluation confirmed only 19, indicating the sensitivity of 100%, specificity of 85.4%, positive predictive value of 67.8%, negative predictive value of 100%, diagnostic accuracy of 89.2%. Conclusions. The diagnostic accuracy of CE-MRM was found to be 83.7%, with a specificity of 96.6%. CE-MRM detected 19 additional lesions that were undetected by either digital mammography or ultrasonography. CE-MRM is sensitive in detecting additional malignant lesions which are not detected by other imaging modalities

    Effect of nano based seed treatment insecticides on seed quality in Pigeonpea

    A laboratory experiment was conducted to know the effect seed treatment with nano insecticides on seed quality of pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) cv. TS3R. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of macro and nano insecticides on seed germination and vigour of Pigeonpea. Different recommended seed treatment insecticides viz, malathion, fenvalerate, emamectine benzoate, thiodicarb, sweet flag and neem seed kernel powder insecticides were synthesized to nano form using high energy planetary ball mill. The Pigeonpea seed were treated with different nano insecticides i.e., 10-90 per cent reduction in actual dosage. Among the different treatments studied, seed treated with nano malathion 50 per cent lesser than normal dosage, fenvalerate 60 per cent lesser, thiodicarb 10 per cent lesser, emamectine benzoate 30 per cent lesser, sweetflag 70 per cent lesser, neem seed kernel powder 40 per cent lesser than actual recommended dosage gave significantly higher seed germination (98.0, 98.67, 98.67, 97.0, 99.0 and 98.67 percent) ,less number of abnormal seedlings (1.0, 0.33, 1.0, 1.0, 1.0 and 0.33 per cent) , shoot length (10.13, 9.00, 11.47, 9.50, 10.90 and 10.87 cm), root length (12.56, 12.93, 12.83, 12.60 11.50 and 13.00 cm), seedling dry weight (85.73, 87.40, 88.47, 87.70, 88.60 and 88.27 g) and seedling vigour index (2223, 2164, 2397, 2143, 2217 and 2354) as compared to untreated seeds and macro insecticides. Therefore, it is very clear that nano based insecticides has a significant (0.1 %) impact on the seed quality improvement

    © 2020 A new analysis method for the rtOSL of BeO ceramics is presented, using temporal curve fitting of an expected rtOSL signal to measured rtOSL signals. The presented technique does not require heavy signal averaging to determine the OSL bleaching correction associated with the ΔrtOSL method, reducing uncertainties in the post-correction rtOSL. The corrected rtOSL signal was demonstrated to be linear with dose, and dose-rate independent. The presented technique is expected to be applicable for many other dosimeters capable of the rtOSL technique. The presented technique achieved relative uncertainties in the corrected rtOSL between 3.4% and 6.5%. The initial measurements are promising, but uncertainties are required to be further improved upon before the technique can be used clinically

    <p><b>Background:</b> The worldwide incidence of esophageal cancer has greatly increased over the past few decades making it the sixth deadliest cancer. The disease is often detected in advanced stages when surgery is no longer an option. The standard treatment in these situations is combined chemoradiotherapy, by employing drug cocktails that lead to optimal treatment outcomes both from the perspective of tumor control and normal tissue toxicity.</p> <p><b>Methods:</b> The aim of this work was to collate the existing trials and clinical studies reported on non-operable esophageal cancer and to analyze the results based on treatment outcomes after various drug combinations.</p> <p><b>Results:</b> Of all drug combinations, cisplatin/5-FU is the most well established chemotherapy regimen for esophageal cancer as both neoadjuvant therapy, an alternative option to surgery, and for palliative purposes. Although this regimen is associated with the most toxicity, it also appears to have the best survival benefit and relief of symptoms.</p> <p><b>Conclusions:</b> More research is warranted to further increase the therapeutic ratio in non-operable esophageal cancers.</p

    Differential Gut Bacteria in Phosphine Resistant and Susceptible Population of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) and their Biochemical and Molecular Characterization

    Not AvailableGut bacteria community associated with insects are crucial to understand their function in the physiology of the host. The hypothesis of the present study was that gut microbiota in phosphine resistant population inhabits phosphine degrading bacteria. The study demonstrated the differential gut bacteria in phosphineresistant and susceptible populations in Tribolium castaneum. Phosphine bioassay of different populations of T. castaneum revealed that Jagatsinghpur (Odisha, India) population had the highest LC50 value (1.104 mg/l). Further, gut bacteria were isolated and characterized through biochemical and molecular techniques. Among nine isolates of bacteria from resistant and susceptible populations, six isolates belonged to gram positive bacteria and three belonged to gram-negative. The 16S rRNA gene sequences displayed 96 to 100 per cent homology to other 16S rRNA gene of strains within the National Centre for Biotechnological information (NCBI), Genbank. Among different bacteria strains, two, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus saprophyticus were reported from resistant populations. Other species belonged to Staphylococcus sp., Enterobacter sp., Lysinibacillus fusiformis, Klebsiella pneumonia (all four from resistant populations) and Achromobacter sp (from a susceptible population).
