Measuring the performance of Islamic banks using maqāsid based model

    Get PDF
The vision and mission of Islamic banks were supposed to reflect the adherence of their activities and aspiration to Maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah. However, there are contentions that Islamic banks have been converging towards conventional banking system. Efforts have been expended to reverse the tide and harmonise Islamic banking to its Sharī‘ah objectives. Hitherto, the existing conventional yardsticks have failed to measure the impact of the harmonisation exercise on Islamic banks’ performance. Therefore, using maqāṣid based yardstick to measure the performance of Islamic banks becomes imperative. This study has made use of al-Imām al-Ghazālī’s theory of Maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah and Ibn ‘Āshūr’s reinterpretation, adopting content analysis and Sekaran (2000) behavioral science methods to develop a Maqāṣid Based Performance Evaluation Model (MPEM) to measure the performance of Islamic banks. Experts’ opinions have validated the model and its acceptability. Suggestions are provided to policy makers and future research. Keywords: Harmonisation; Islamic banks; Maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah; performance evaluation; Sharī‘ah

Private secondary schools that want to gain competitive edge need to search for effective and creative ways to attract, retain and foster stronger relationships with students. The decision of selecting a school by the parents for their kids is based on a multitude of factors that differ from one society to another depending on its culture, economic status, religion and others. The objective of the present research is to identify and prioritize the factors that can enhance the quality of education in an international Islamic school located in Kuala Lumpur from the perspective of parents. The researchers employed both qualitative and quantitative approaches for data collection. The qualitative data were collected through interviewing 10 parents whose kids are currently enrolled in the school, while the quantitative data were collected through a questionnaire survey based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). A thematic analysis and AHP were used for analysing the qualitative and quantitative data, respectively. Findings from the thematic analysis resulted in 19 factors; however, only 8 factors with higher frequency were selected to represent the factors expected to enhance the quality of education. The AHP analysis resulted in prioritizing these 8 factors according to parents' judgements. The results show that the Islamic environment represents the most desired factor, followed by quality of teachers and school discipline

Managing time means engaging activities that generate greater benefits to human beings. To a Muslim, benefits encompass for both worlds, i.e., life in this mundane world as well as life in the hereafter. Previous research on time management resulted in a variety of findings depending on the aspects under study. The objective of this research is to investigate the components of time management that have significant relationship with job performance, especially in the context of Malaysian employees. This research also intends to relate the concepts and attributes of Al-Wasatiyyah that have direct relationship to job performance. To pursue the research objectives, 223 employees working in different sectors in Malaysia were contacted. The researchers found that certain time management factors namely ‘prioritisation of tasks’, ‘usage of schedules’ and ‘time management instrument’ sustained statistically significant positive relationships to job performance. Meanwhile, the Al-Wasatiyyah variables that have been found to have statistically significant positive relationships to job performance are ‘working with sincerity/pure intention (niyyah)’, ‘following the middle path to avoid excessiveness in working place (wasatan)’, ‘practicing values in working place (qiam)’, and ‘ensuring fairness in task assignment (adl)’. These findings have important implications. Most importantly, managers of organisations can practice them to motivate employees in order to enhance their job performance which by and large will improve the performance of the whole organisation in the long run

The objective of this study was to evaluate the anti-diabetic and anti-diarrheal activity of methanol extract of Flemingia stricta Roxb. (Fabaceae) leaf. In anti-diabetic study, the extract was administered to alloxan-induce diabetic mice at two concentrations (200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg body weight) for acute (12 hours) and prolong treatments (15 days) and blood glucose levels of diabetic mice were monitored at intervals of hours and days throughout the duration of treatment. Antidiarrheal test was conducted by castor oil induced diarrhea and enteropooling as well as intestinal motility in mice at three different concentration (100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg body weight). Treatment of alloxan induce diabetic mice with the extract caused a significant reduction in fasting blood glucose level of the diabetic mice both in acute (12 hours) and prolong treatment (15 days) and it was determined that the F. stricta methanol extract at both concentration (200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg) showed the significant (P<0.05) hypoglycemic effect in comparison to the standard drug metformin. In the case of castor oil induced diarrheal test, enteropooling test and gastrointestinal motility test, the extract of F. stricta  at 100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg has given significant effect (P<0.05) compared to the standard drug loperamide. But 400 mg/kg demonstrated the highest activity amongst the three doses. These results suggested that the methanol extract of F. stricta Roxb. possess promising anti-diabetic effect on alloxan-induced mice and significant antidiarrheal effect on castor oil induced diarrheal mice. Majority of the countries in the world are grappling with the onslaught of COVID-19 by engaging in various measures to safeguard the lives of citizens of their country. On this backdrop, the present research aims at identifying the attributes that governments need to pay increased attention. The perception data was collected from citizens of two countries i.e., Bangladeshis (n=102) and Malaysians (n=97). The Importance Compliance Analysis (ICA) was applied on 29 attributes for the two countries’ citizens and a comparison was made on the findings. Apart from ICA, Paired as well as Independent Sample t-tests were performed on the data collected. According to the findings (which are applicable for both countries) the respective government should take measures so that their citizens strictly adhere the recommended attributes. The study findings may also help other countries as well in limiting the spread of COVID-19
