    The Influence of Wait Time Units on Patience in Intertemporal Choice

    Patience is important for consumers. It allows consumers to forgo immediate desires and instead reap greater benefits in the future. We can see a conflict between immediate and future benefits in our everyday decisions, such as when we decide whether to spend money on frivolous products while shopping at the mall, or to set money aside for the future. In this dissertation I study patience through the context of intertemporal choice. These choices are commonplace in the marketplace, and involve choosing between a smaller-sooner (SS) and a larger-later (LL) reward. SS and LL are separated by a wait time period. If consumers are willing to endure the longer wait time for LL, then they are able to receive the greater benefits of the larger reward. Thus, choosing LL reflects greater patience, and choice of LL should increase when the wait time feels short. The wait time for the rewards can be described in different units of time. For example, 3 months can just as easily be described as 90 days. I investigate how describing the wait time in different units of time can impact patience. I argue that expressing wait time in larger time units (e.g., months rather than days) shrinks wait time perceptions, and consequently boosts patience. Importantly, I argue that this effect emerges more strongly when rewards are hedonic rather than utilitarian. My predicted effects are based on what we know about the numerosity heuristic and the hedonic utilitarian distinction between rewards. The numerosity heuristic is the tendency to equate smaller numbers with smaller magnitudes while not fully considering the associated units. Thus, a wait time expressed as 3 months rather than 90 days should feel shorter when the influence of the numerosity heuristic is strong, since ‘3’ is less than ‘90’. I argue that numerosity’s influence will remain strong only when rewards are hedonic, and diminish when they are utilitarian. This is because utilitarian rewards in intertemporal choice should lead to a more calculative mindset when compared to hedonic rewards, which should decrease reliance on the numerosity heuristic. I find evidence for my proposed interactive effect between time units and reward types in six studies. Also, in line with numerosity, I show that this effect is mediated by larger time units shrinking wait time perception. Finally, in line with my theory about utilitarian (vs. hedonic) rewards leading to a greater reliance on calculation, I show that a primed calculative mindset, or a simple individual tendency to be more calculative in decisions, diminishes the effect of units even for hedonic rewards, and thus eliminates the hedonic-utilitarian asymmetry. These results contribute to research on numerosity, intertemporal choice, and hedonic-utilitarian differences; and offer a simple tool for practitioners to influence patience

    Anomaly Detection In IoT Devices Using Data Mining Techniques

    Internet of Things (IoT) devices are used to transmit data over a network. IoT device usage has grown and has been adopted in healthcare, smart homes, smart grids, connected cars and so on. However, IoT devices have security vulnerabilities and cannot provide a 100% guarantee of data privacy. They are prone to hacks and hardware Trojans that can lead to data theft. Hence there is a need to find ways to help solve the challenges of IoT devices. This paper proposes an approach that investigates how fraud, data theft, or fault, can be detected through the power profile of IoT devices in different operation modes using data mining techniques. Different cases will be made based on the behavior of the IoT device in terms of power consumption. These cases will be dependent on the mode of data transfer. Data mining techniques will be used to develop a model capable of detecting malicious behaviors and any form of the anomaly in power profiles of IoT devices

    Morpho-physiological growth performance and phytoremediation capabilities of selected xerophyte grass species toward Cr and Pb stress

    Being sessile organisms, plants cannot escape unwanted changes in the environment. The rapid human population explosion caused significant environmental problems. Heavy metals produced through various sources can cause severe damage to living organisms. The study was planned to evaluate four grass species’ morpho-physiological growth characteristics and phytoremediation capabilities under chromium (Cr) and lead stress (Pb) in the arid climate. Typha angustifolia, Tragus roxburghii, Aeluropus logopoides, and Cenchrus ciliaris grass species were used for the study. One-year-old stubbles from the Cholistan desert were used for the experiment. Cr treatments in the form of K2Cr2O7 were applied at 0, 20, 40, and 80 mg L–1, whereas Pb was applied as PbCl2 at 0, 50, 200, and 500 mg L–1 as control, low, moderate and high-stress, respectively. After 6 weeks of heavy metals treatments, plants were harvested and analyzed for growth performance and phytoremediation capabilities. Results depicted that, regarding morphological attributes, T. angustifolia performed better, followed by C. ciliaris; no clear pattern was observed for T. roxburghii and A. logopoides. The CO2 assimilation rate (Co2d) and water use efficiency (WUE) increased as the heavy metal stress increased in all species under both metals. In contrast, total chlorophyll content was higher under low stress. Other physiological parameters, such as relative humidity (RHd), net photosynthetic rate (A), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (Gs), leaf internal CO2 concentration (Ci) and membrane stability index (MSI) gradually decreased as the Cr, and Pb stress levels increased among all the species. Moreover, Cr and Pb absorption contents of T. angustifolia were higher than the other three species at each stress level. Overall, T. angustifolia thrived against heavy metals stress and showed higher biomass, maximum photosynthetic measurements, WUE and higher metal absorption among all the selected species. Results concluded that although all the selected species behaved fine under stress conditions, T. angustifolia performance was better; thus, it can be used to remediate the soil near industrial estates

    Effect of exogenous application of nicotinic acid on morpho-physiological characteristics of Hordeum vulgare L. under water stress

    Abiotic stresses, such as high temperature and drought conditions, greatly influence the development of plants and the quality and quantity of products. Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) crop production is largely impacted by drought, affecting growth, yield, and ultimately the productivity of the crop in hot arid/semi-arid conditions. The current pot experiment was directed to observe the outcome of nicotinic acid (NA) treatments on barley’s physiological, biochemical, and production attributes at two capacity levels, i.e., 100% normal range and withholding water stress. Randomized complete block design (RCBD) was used during the experimentation with the two-factor factorial arrangement. NA was applied exogenously by two different methods, i.e., foliar and soil application (fertigation). NA solution contained various application levels, such as T1 = control, foliar applications (T2 = 0.7368 gL−1, T3 = 1.477 gL−1, T4 = 2.2159 gL−1), and soil applications (T5 = 0.4924 gL−1, T6 = 0.9848 gL−1, and T7 = 1.4773 gL−1). Results depicted that, overall, foliar treatments showed better effects than control and soil treatments. Plant growth was preeminent under T4 treatment, such as plant height (71.07 cm), relative water content (84.0%), leaf water potential (39.73-MPa), leaf area index (36.53 cm2), biological yield (15.10 kgha−1), grain yield (14.40 kgha−1), harvest index (57.70%), catalase (1.54 mmolg−1FW−1), peroxidase (1.90 g−1FWmin−1), and superoxide dismutase (52.60 µgFW−1) were superior under T4 treatment. Soil plant analysis development (54.13 µgcm−2) value was also higher under T4 treatment and lowest under T7 treatment. In conclusion, NA-treated plants were more successful in maintaining growth attributes than non-treated plants; therefore, the NA foliar treatment at the rate of 2.2159 gL−1 is suggested to find economical crop yield under drought conditions. The present study would contribute significantly to improving the drought tolerance potential of barley through exogenous NA supply in water deficit areas

    Morphological spectrum of vesiculobullous skin lesions: An institutional perspective

    Introduction: A vesiculobullous lesion of the skin encompasses a group of dermatological disorders with protean clinicopathological features. They usually occur as a part of the spectrum of various infectious, inflammatory, drug-induced, genetic, and autoimmune disorders. Therefore, accurate diagnosis of these lesions is essential for appropriate management and to reduce the associated morbidity and mortality. The conventional skin punch biopsy is the mainstay in the diagnosis of dermatological diseases, especially when combined with confirmatory tests, such as direct immunofluorescence (DIF). Our study evaluated the clinicopathological spectrum of vesiculobullous lesions.Methods: We studied 150 cases of vesiculobullous lesions at the Department of Histopathology, Liaquat National Hospital and Medical College Karachi, Pakistan. Written and informed consent was taken from the patients followed by skin punch procedure in which three biopsies were obtained, which included one biopsy from the lesion and two peri-lesional biopsies. One peri-lesional biopsy was sent in cryomatrix for DIF studies, whereas the other two were sent in formalin to follow the standard tissue-processing protocol.Results: Our results showed that most patients belonged to the geriatric age group of more than 50 years (44.7%), and 54.7% of the patients were females. Total 74.7% of the patients had generalized lesions, followed by lower limbs (9.3%) and trunk (7.3%) involvement. Most patients were diagnosed with bullous pemphigoid (31.3%), followed by pemphigus vulgaris (27.3%), dermatitis herpetiformis (15.3%), Darier’s disease (14.7%), pemphigus foliaceus (4.7%), epidermolysis bullosa (2%), linear immunoglobulin A dermatosis (2%), paraneoplastic pemphigus (0.7%), and drug reactions (0.7%). DIF studies were applied on 60 cases, out of which complement protein C3c was the most commonly deposited protein (53.3%).Conclusion: Our study emphasized the diagnostic role of skin punch biopsy in the proper evaluation of vesiculobullous skin lesions. Histopathology is the cornerstone diagnostic tool in this regard, with DIF being a useful adjunct
