Block Ramps in Curved Rivers: Morphology Analysis and Prototype Data Supported Design Criteria for Mild Bed Slopes
Eco-friendly river restoration structures are a valid solution for river training projects. Among this structure typology, block ramps have been successfully tested to solve problems related to river sediment control, bed stabilization and energy dissipation. Despite the conspicuous literature dealing with block ramps design in straight rivers, there are no studies analysing the erosive process occurring in the stilling basin downstream of a block ramp in a curved river bend. Therefore, this paper represents the first systematic analysis of their behaviour and of the resulting downstream equilibrium morphology in such geometric configuration. A dedicated model was built to simulate a wide range of hydraulic conditions. Experimental data analysis allowed describing the erosion dynamics occurring in the stilling basin and, at the same time, to derive a useful design relationship by which it is possible to estimate the maximum scour depth. Furthermore, the model results were successfully validated by using field measurements collected in the Porebianka River (Poland). Both field data and laboratory experimental results allowed furnishing a comprehensive description of the scour phenomenon. The proposed relationship represents the first trustable and valid tool for hydraulic design of such structure typology in curved rivers

Block ramp rebuilding and exploitation problems : chute stone dimension choosing; upstream the ramp river channel erosion
The paper shows a rebuilding example of drop hydraulic structure which was changed into the block ramp hydraulic structure. Artificial roughness of a slope plate of the block ramp was reached by placing cobbles along the chute slope. The dimension of cobbles was calculated applying different methods and the optimum value for that dimension was chosen. Also the diagram of Radecki-Pawlik et al. 2015 was used. Finally we are showing the distribution of velocities and shear stresses upstream of the block ramp for exploitation and river channel bed protection reason to give the information on the possible erosion process there and seek some suggestions for river bed protections. The work was carried on in Polish Carpathians on the Brennica River
On chosen problems with sand-gravel subaquatic dunes formation along the outlet highland river
In the paper the
research results of forming observations of
sand-gravel dunes developing on the riverbed
along the outlet reach of the highland
type of river. The subject of subaquatic river
forms one can fi nd in many scientifi c works,
however most of the existing papers cover
sand dunes and ripples found in the lowland
rivers. Moreover, the majority of research
was conducted in laboratory fl umes, since
all fi eldworks need very complex research,
complicated logistic as well as is extremely
money consuming (hiring ships, diving bell,
long time echosounding etc.). Thus there is a
nowadays need to present fi eld data covering
a subject of the river bed forms which still
could be considered as dunes but are built up
with material coarser then 2 mm (which is
fi ne gravel) and coarser. The research reach
described along the present paper is lying in
the region of confl uence of the Raba and the
Vistula Rivers, within the outlet of the Raba
River, close to Uscie Solne, just below the Polish Carpathians mountains line. The research
results show such parameters as: length,
height and granulometric composition of the
dunes found along that reach as well as the
hydrodynamics parameters such as: shear
velocity, shear stresses and resistant coeffi -
cients. Having gathered in one place the fi eld
measurements results many relationships between
mentioned parameters are presented.
The work could be useful for river engineers,
fl uvial geomorphologists, geologists and
ecologists working with river channels
Disparity of hydrodynamic and granulometric conditions during creation the sandbank of conical-channel shape in mountain stream with gravelly bottom
Praca ma na celu poznanie zróżnicowania granulometrycznego
i warunków hydraulicznych charakteryzowanych przez parametry
przepływu w rejonie występowania łachy korytowej o budowie roztokowej.
Badania skoncentrowano na poznaniu budowy wierzchniej warstwy
łachy roztokowej (jej opancerzenia), wyznaczeniu parametrów sedymentologicznych,
przeprowadzeniu pomiarów prędkości wody, a na
ich podstawie wyznaczeniu podstawowych parametrów hydraulicznych
przepływu w charakterystycznych punktach badanego odcinka.
Próbki materiału tworzącego łachy pobrano w dziesięciu przekrojów
pomiarowych założonych w obrębie wyznaczonej do badań łachy
korytowej. Na podstawie uzyskanych w ten sposób danych granulometrycznych
sporządzono histogramy uziarnienia i krzywe przesiewu oraz
obliczono następujące parametry granulometryczne: wskaźnik wysortowania
według Traska, stopień wysortowania według Hazena, wskaźnik
różnoziarnistości według Knoroza, wskaźnik jednostajności (cecha
dominacji) według Kollisa, współczynnik skośności według Traska
i średnie odchylenie standardowe według Folka.
Badania zrealizowano
w zlewni rzeki Skawy, w rejonie przekroju Zembrzyce w Karpatach
Polskich. The main aim of the work is to presents the results of examination of some basic
granulometric and hydraulic parameters of the discharge within the region of the
braided river bar formation. The research was concentrated on the investigation of
the armoring layer of the braided bar in terms of the basic sedimentological parameters,
and this way on understanding the forming process of this structure. At the
same time hydrological measurements were carried out in the region of the bar and
on the basis of these hydraulics calculations of hydrodynamics parameters were performed.
For granulometric investigations the samples of the gravel forming the
braided bar were collected in ten cross sections of the bar. On the basis of sieve
analysis the grain size curves were prepared, so the main granulometric characteristics
were described, as follows: Trask sorting coefficient, Hazen sorting coefficient,
Knoroz grain parameter, Kollis domination parameter, Trask skewness coefficient
and Folk mean deviation. The measurements of water velocities just over the river
bed allowed calculating main hydraulics parameters, such as: shear velocity, shear
stresses, Froude number, Reynolds number, flow resistance coefficient within the
region of the braided middle gravel bar formation in the mountainous river. Hydrodynamics
survey was done just immediately after the spring flood in 2003 when the
braided bar developed within the river channel. The number of observations connected
with the hydrodynamics influence on stream braided bar formation was done which describe the braided process of the middle braided bar development. The study
was undertaken in the Skawa River at the Polish part of the Carpathian Mountains
Block ramps (BR) made of natural sandstone rapid hydraulic structures (RHS) of Peterka type: stone dimension calculations, a comparative study
The paper presents results of hydraulic modelling of block ramps (BR) made of natural stones (seven constructional solutions) and compares them with the results of classical research by Peterka. The main aim of the paper is to provide a simplified solution to determining the dimension of stones fixed to the sloping apron of the BR in order to reduce energy of flowing water along the ramp. This new way of assessing the dimensions of stones along BR sloping apron is presented with proposals on how to calculate stone dimension. The paper is dedicated to hydraulics engineers, scientists, designers, practitioners and also to researchers in the field of low-head hydraulic structures
Stopnie rampy zwane bystrzami o zwiększonej szorstkości jako ekologiczne rozwiązania utrzymania koryt rzek i potoków górskich
W artykule zwrócono uwagę na nowoczesny, proekologiczny sposób utrzymania rzek i potoków górskich poprzez wprowadzenie do gamy obecnie stosowanych urządzeń hydrotechnicznych bystrz o zwiększonej szorstkości, zwanych też stopniami ramp. Budowle te, utrzymując koryta rzek i potoków górskich w stanie ekologicznym dobrym, powodują odtwarzanie struktur łach korytowych, tworząc stosowne warunki życia moakrobentosowi oraz umożliwiając swobodną wędrówkę ryb.
Bankfull discharge determination in the two diverse mountainouss catchment
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań dotyczące określenia wartości
przepływu brzegowego Qb dla dwu wybranych rzek górskich: Raby
oraz Kamienicy. Przedstawiono również opis wybranych metod obliczania
przepływu brzegowego Qb: metodę Williamsa, Woodyera, Wołoszyna,
Rileya, Pickupa-Warnera, Wollmana oraz Warnera, Schumma
i Browna.
obserwacji wodowskazowych, a wystarczą wyłącznie obserwacje i pomiary
przeprowadzone punktowo.
brzegach cieku. W związku z tym korytach rzek naturalnych wskazane
byłoby określenie wartości przepływu brzegowego przed każdą inwestycją
metodą Woodyera. Archiwizacja tych danych może posłużyć w przyszłości
do podejmowanych prób renaturalizacji tych i podobnych cieków.
Badania zrealizowano dla dwóch różnych morfologicznie odcinków
rzecznych: częściowo uregulowanego oraz będącego w stanie naturalnym.
Badane zlewnie znajdują się na terenie Karpat. The paper presents the results of determinations and calculations of bankfull
discharge Qb for two chosen mountainous gravel-bed rivers: the Raba River and the
Kamienica River. Also within the paper described in details some main methods of
determination and calculation bankfull Qb: the Williams, the Woodyer, the Wołoszyn,
the Riley, the Pickup&Warner, the Wollman and the Warner, Schumm&Browna
methods. On the basis of the analysis of obtained results of bankfull value using all
applied methods it was pointed that to determine bankfull one does not have to hale
the river gauging observations. The data which are enough to calculate/determine Qb
could be collected in-situ just within the research cross-section where there is a need
to find bankfull. Another words the river/stream where one plans the hydrotechnic
investment or river training works does not to have be hydrologically controlled. At
the same time, for the civil engineer designer bankfull value is very important in
term showing the real value of the discharge which shapes the river cross section and
is responsible for fluvial morphological changes (the dominant discharge). Finally it
was pointed that bankfull is responsible for plants species location along the cross
section of the river. Because of that, it was suggested that from ecological point of
view it would be worthy to determine bankfull using Woodyer method in all cross
sections when river training works are planed in the river channel. Also it was suggested
that in the future it would be very useful to make a plant-atlas of species
which one can find in the river channel shaped by bankfull. Such work would be
important in all river renaturisation works. The research described in the present
paper was realized in Polish Carpathians within the river channels party chanalised
and party being in nature
Wyznaczenie wartości przepływu brzegowego za pomocą nowej metody IBA: Invertebrate Bankfull Assesment Method
Along the paper the new method called Invertebrate Bankfull Assessment method (IBA method) of determination of bankfull discharge is presented. The investigation of bankfull discharge using IBA were performed within one Polish Carpathian stream in the mountain region: the Ochotnica Stream. As an index of bankfull the existence of certain species of invertebrates was used which are present and resistant to specific water discharge conditions. The borders within a cross section of the mountain stream with a gravel bed were defined where characteristic invertebrates are present which are recognized as bankfull borders. Finally three invertebrates benches (IB-ms) were recognized which are characterized by very specific invertebrate species. Bankfull discharge was calculated up to this IB-ms and corelated using Canonical Correspondence Analysis with other values of bankfull calculated for a cross section using different bankfull.W pracy przedstawiono nową metodę wyznaczenia wartości przepływu brzegowego na wybranym odcinku rzeki górskiej.
The influence of anthropopression on plants cover and deposition of trace elements within the region of bottom sediments of hydraulic structures – the examples from Polish Carpathians streams
Celem badań przedstawionych w niniejszej pracy było porównanie oznaczonych
zawartości wybranych pierwiastków śladowych (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb i Zn)
gromadzonych w osadach dennych w rejonie zapór przeciwrumowiskowych i bystrotoków
wybudowanych w dolnych odcinkach potoków Młynne i Kudowski,
W odniesieniu do szaty roślinnej należy zauważyć, iż zbiorowiska
roślinne występujące wzdłuż potoków Kudowski, Lubański i Młynne
The aim of the following paper was to present the level of the chosen trace
elements such as: Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn which were deposited within the bottom
sediments in the region of hydraulic structures. Special attention was put to
sediments trapped in the pools of check-dams and small channel bars found along
the channelized parts of the mountain streams. The research was conducted on
three Polish Carpathian streams: the lłynne stream, the Kudowski, and the Lubanski
stream – all in the Gorce Mountains. All of the investigated streams are partly
channalized and partly are in natural conditions. The contamination was stated in
sediments of the Mlynne Stream in case of Ni, Cu and Cr. The sample were
collected upstream the barrage (Ni and Cu) and ad the barrage Cr. The plant
covers were determinated mainly by hydraulic structures. In case of vegetation
the biggest anthropopression was stated in upstream of barrage sections located
on the Mlynne and Kudowski Streams
