Developments in the Use of Swine Feed Additives

    Get PDF
We in the swine industry are in the business of producing food. The consumer of pork products in America, and more recently the world consumer, expects us to produce wholesome food free of any contamination that may be injurious to his or her health. Thus we must keep our customer, the pork consumer, in mind in anything we do in the swine industry, especially when using feed additives

    Stilbestrol for Growing-fattening Cattle

    Get PDF
The production of beef in South Dakota is one of the largest industries in the state. Those in the business of producing beef are constantly looking for newer methods of management, nutrition and breeding which will economically increase the production of beef. It has been shown that adding diethylstilbestrol to the rations or implanting diethylstilbestrol pellets in the ears will generally economically increase beef production by increasing rate of gains and feed efficiency. Several questions have been raised by livestock producers and research workers since the introduction of stilbestrol in beef cattle production. Some questions are: Does the administration of stilbestrol affect carcass grade, or the properties of lean to fat in a carcass? What are the effects of administering stilbestrol over a long period of time? Does the administration of stilbestrol lose its advantages when administered over a long period of time? Is there any advantage of administering stilbestrol in only certain phases of beef cattle production or should it be administered continuously from weaning to slaughter? What are the advantages of administering stilbestrol in each of the three major phases from weaning to slaughter? How does orally administered stilbestrol compare to implanted stilbestrol? How long does it take a stilbestrol implant to be absorbed in ears of cattle? Is the stilbestrol pellet residue found in the ears of cattle at the time of slaughter still potent? The experiments reported in this thesis were designed to help answer some of these questions

Summary of Research on Diethlstilbestrol for Growing and Fattening Beef Cattle

Numerous experiments on the response of growing and fattening cattle to stilbestrol have been reported in recent years. There has been a response to stilbestrol in most of these experiments, though to varying degrees. Many of the reports have been of a preliminary nature and in several instances have covered only one trial. A review of such experiments individually does not present a clear and concise picture of the effects of stilbestrol treatment. Therefore, results of most of the reported experiments have been reviewed and are summarized in the tables in this pamphlet. Four rather distinct phases of cattle feeding have been investigated. These are wintering without much fattening, pasturing alone, pasturing with additional feeding, and dry-lot fattening. These feeding phases are summarized separately

Diethylstilbestrol for Wintering, Pasturing and Fattening Beef Cattle

Since the approval of stilbestrol for cattle feeding, numerous experiments have been conducted to determine its value with various rations and feeding systems. Several questions have been raised. What are the effects of stilbestrol over a long period of time? What effects will stilbestrol administration during the pasture season have on later feed-lot performance when stilbestrol is given again? How long are implants effective? What are the comparative effects of implants and feeding stilbestrol under various feeding systems and the effects of the two methods of administration on carcass grade and carcass characteristics? These are important questions and present research in these areas is limited or not conclusive. The trial reported here was conducted to obtain more specific information on these problems

Informal Language and Its Relationship to the Acquisition of Twitter Followers

    Get PDF
This paper argues that increased use of Informal Language in an organization's Tweets will increase their number of Followers on Twitter. An unobtrusive content analysis was conducted on approximately 12,000 Tweets authored by 18 academic institutions, all members of the iSchools organization, in order to extract instances of Informal Language. The findings suggest that Informal Language is an effective means of communication in the context of Twitter, and imply more broadly that conforming to the conventions established by any social media platform is an effective means of increasing presence and influence in a given medium

Noncontact Diffuse Optical Assessment of Blood Flow Changes in Head and Neck Free Tissue Transfer Flaps

Knowledge of tissue blood flow (BF) changes after free tissue transfer may enable surgeons to predict the failure of flap thrombosis at an early stage. This study used our recently developed noncontact diffuse correlation spectroscopy to monitor dynamic BF changes in free flaps without getting in contact with the targeted tissue. Eight free flaps were elevated in patients with head and neck cancer; one of the flaps failed. Multiple BF measurements probing the transferred tissue were performed during and post the surgical operation. Postoperative BF values were normalized to the intraoperative baselines (assigning “1”) for the calculation of relative BF change (rBF). The rBF changes over the seven successful flaps were 1.89±0.15, 2.26±0.13, and 2.43±0.13 (mean±standard error), respectively, on postoperative days 2, 4, and 7. These postoperative values were significantly higher than the intraoperative baseline values (
