Safe to fight: Lessons from counseling for grappling coaches

    Get PDF
The following is a series of articles designed to help coaches respond empathically and effectively to the emotional needs of their athletes and to safety concerns in their club. The three articles discuss students who shut down when they train; students who become overly aggressive; and students or coaches who groom and prey on others. A review of the counseling literature is offered to explain the behaviors each type of student is likely to engage in. Counseling principles and technique are offered to provide a framework for coaches to use as they teach these kinds of students and address safety concerns. Specific interventions are then offered as examples of how to redirect maladaptive or dangerous behavior and keep all students and staff safe

    A Study in Transparency

In a generation that feels more lost than ever, we need transparency in order to feel less alone. We need to see others, and we need to truly see ourselves. This is my way of being seen, and in turn, helping others to feel seen and understood. When I was in middle school I began to record my daily life and thoughts in journals, which evolved to help me cope as I grew up. In putting these pages on display, I’m presenting myself. That’s Rachel Wilson. I’m a writer, a designer, an artist, maybe a song writer. Maybe a lot of things. I’m not really sure yet, but now more than ever, I realize that’s okay, and I’m sure I’ll figure it out

M.Tech. (Architectural Technology)This dissertation is structured to mimic or represent my design project, which was developed in conjunction with theoretical readings and research. The aim is to provide a comprehensive representation of the project’s development from theoretical beginnings to architectural detail. This dissertation attempts to uncover, explore and understand the fragile relationship between man, nature and architecture, stemming from a deeply personal interest in the rehabilitation of political wastelands through ecological restoration. The aim of this study is to pursue a holistic design approach, which understands the architectural discipline as an interrelated profession in which buildings cannot be designed in isolation. Broken down into three main parts, this document illustrates the development of my theoretical and contextual interests into design. These papers are presented in their entirety of this document as Part A (starting point and research influence), Part B (process and discovery) and Part C which introduces a narrative program developed for the architectural discovery of K-206 (nestled within ‘jungle’ in Alexandra). A series of abstract drawings and model building experiments initially framed the investigation, allowing for chance, exploration and the unexpected, valuable experiments in the development of an architectural language and vocabulary which were refined over the course of the yea

Wrapped in Tradition: Ceremonial Skirts of Kuba Women in the Western Congo Basin

    Get PDF
The Kuba Kingdom resides in the central Kasai region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The numerous clans which make up the kingdom have become recognized around the world for their exceptional corpus of design patterns which adorn their embroidered ceremonial skirts. The decorated wrap-skirts of Kuba women are a social construct and have come to represent the communal artistry of the Kuba clans. The raffia cloths are woven by the men and decorated through the combined effort of several women. The effect of having the skirt decorated by multiple women is that each skirt has its own unique design as varying skill levels and styles are joined together in one finished product. In the designs themselves, the beauty of Kuba art is found in its imperfection as the women use variation and off-beat phrasing to make a more compositionally interesting piece. Through the analysis of articles written by those who have studied among the Kuba, this paper explores the unique communal participation in the creation of ceremonial skirts and their use of the skirts to uphold tradition and the cultural values of their kingdom

Gastrodiplomacy, or the use of food in the construction of a nation brand, is one of many tools that a government can employ in its broader strategy of cultural diplomacy. The idea of pleasing the global palate while at the same time improving a country\u27s image lies at the core of any culinary diplomacy initiative, and the case of Peru is no exception. By utilizing the promotional campaign Cocina peruana para el mundo ( Peruvian cuisine for the World ), the Peruvian government is attempting to construct a national brand centered on its cuisine. This paper investigates the specific context of the Peruvian project while also exploring the broader motivations for and meanings of using food as a basis for a diplomacy initiative. It concludes with an attempt to deconstruct the theoretical significance and practical implications of the intersections food, identity, and nation
