Local Isometric immersions of pseudo-spherical surfaces and evolution equations

The class of differential equations describing pseudo-spherical surfaces, first introduced by Chern and Tenenblat [3], is characterized by the property that to each solution of a differential equation, within the class, there corresponds a 2-dimensional Riemannian metric of curvature equal to $-1$. The class of differential equations describing pseudo-spherical surfaces carries close ties to the property of complete integrability, as manifested by the existence of infinite hierarchies of conservation laws and associated linear problems. As such, it contains many important known examples of integrable equations, like the sine-Gordon, Liouville and KdV equations. It also gives rise to many new families of integrable equations. The question we address in this paper concerns the local isometric immersion of pseudo-spherical surfaces in ${\bf E}^{3}$ from the perspective of the differential equations that give rise to the metrics. Indeed, a classical theorem in the differential geometry of surfaces states that any pseudo-spherical surface can be locally isometrically immersed in ${\bf E}^{3}$. In the case of the sine-Gordon equation, one can derive an expression for the second fundamental form of the immersion that depends only on a jet of finite order of the solution of the pde. A natural question is to know if this remarkable property extends to equations other than the sine-Gordon equation within the class of differential equations describing pseudo-spherical surfaces. In an earlier paper [11], we have shown that this property fails to hold for all other second order equations, except for those belonging to a very special class of evolution equations. In the present paper, we consider a class of evolution equations for $u(x,t)$ of order $k\geq 3$ describing pseudo-spherical surfaces. We show that whenever an isometric immersion in ${\bf E}^3$ exists, depending on a jet of finite order of $u$, then the coefficients of the second fundamental forms are functions of the independent variables $x$ and $t$ only.Comment: Fields Institute Communications, 2015, Hamiltonian PDEs and Applications, pp.N

Measurement compatibility in Bell nonlocality tests

In this manuscript we show, however, that even though incompatible measurements are necessary for the violation of any Bell inequality, some relevant Bell-like inequalities may be obtained if compatibility relations are assumed between the local measurements of one (or more) of the parties. Sexual Assault Training in the Military: Evaluating Efforts to End the “Invisible War”

Sexual assault is an insidious problem in the United States military. In 2005 the Department of Defense (DoD) created the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office, which centralizes responsibility for sexual assault training. However, this training initiative has undergone little evaluation by outside researchers. Addressing this need, we analyzed responses from over 24,000 active duty personnel who completed the 2010 DoD Workplace and Gender Relations Survey. We assessed whether sexual assault training exposure (None, Minimal, Partial, or Comprehensive) predicted accurate knowledge of sexual assault resources and protocols. Using a social‐ecological framework, we investigated whether institutional and individual factors influenced Service members’ training exposure and judgment of training effectiveness. According to our results, exposure to comprehensive training predicted lower sexual assault incidence and superior knowledge. However, comprehensive training differed as a function of military branch, rank, gender, and sexual assault history. Judgments of training effectiveness also varied across these dimensions. Our results highlight the importance of considering context, gender, and victimization history when evaluating institutional efforts to end sexual violence. The DoD’s 2010 annual report on military sexual assault concluded that “most Active Duty members receive effective training on sexual assault” (p. 104). Projeto Rondon no município de Caridade – CE: avaliação dos resultados obtidos com as feiras da saúde

Trabalho apresentado no II Congresso Nacional do PROJETO RONDON, realizado em Florianópolis, SC, no período de 23 a 25 de setembro de 2015 - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina.A Organização Mundial de Saúde (OMS) classifica as condições de saúde em agudas e crônicas, tendo a Hipertensão Arterial Sistêmica (HAS) e o Diabetes Mellitus (DM) como condições crônico-degenerativas de saúde. Assim, tais patologias recebem atenção especial do sistema de saúde, haja vista a alta prevalência das complicações cardiovasculares, cerebrovasculares, nefrológicas e visuais oriundas dessas doenças. Nesse sentido, essas afecções e seus agravos necessitam de ações efetivas de promoção e prevenção da saúde. A Feira da Saúde foi uma das oficinas do Centro Universitário de Patos de Minas – UNIPAM durante o Projeto Rondon de Janeiro/2015 - Operação Mandacaru em Caridade - CE. As ações basearam-se na realização de um circuito de atendimento, no qual o paciente foi acolhido e devidamente identificado e a seguir, foram coletadas e registradas, em uma ficha própria desenvolvida para a feira, informações de saúde desses indivíduos. Ao final do circuito, cada pessoa atendida apresentou esse instrumento a um rondonista. Após a avaliação dos dados encontrados na ficha, o membro da equipe dialogou com o paciente, dando ênfase em orientações que, de acordo com as evidências científicas, reduzem a mortalidade, como uma alimentação saudável, a prática regular de atividade física, a redução ou abolição do consumo de bebidas alcóolicas, tabaco e outras drogas e a utilização correta de medicamentos para o controle da Hipertensão Arterial e do Diabetes Mellitus. Ao longo da realização do Projeto Rondon no município, esta oficina foi desenvolvida quatro vezes, em Caridade e nos distritos de São Domingos e Ipueira dos Gomes, ultrapassando o número de 250 indivíduos atendidos. Desses, 135 tiveram suas fichas sorteadas aleatoriamente para a avaliação do perfil dos pacientes acolhidos nas feiras de saúde. Dentre os resultados obtidos, perceberam-se nitidamente os hábitos de vida desfavoráveis para o aparecimento e a progressão das doenças crônicas, sendo relevante citar o percentual elevado de pacientes com sobrepeso e obesidade e o sedentarismo, este último observado através dos mais de 80% dos pacientes que não praticavam nenhuma atividade física. Portanto, acredita-se que as Feiras da Saúde foram de suma importância para a conscientização da população desse município para o autocuidado orientado através de hábitos de vida saudáveis

Development Of A Balb/c Mouse Model Of Helicobacter Pylori Infection With Fresh And Frozen Bacteria.

An experimental model for H. pylori infection was established by intragastrically challenging BALB/c mice with 1 ml (10(8) CFU/ml) of suspension for two consecutive days. Animals were divided into three groups. GA: mice inoculated with fresh bacteria; GB: mice inoculated with frozen bacteria, and GC: mice inoculated with brucella broth (control group). Animals were killed at 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 and 60 days pi and fragments of stomach and duodenum were collected, paraffin embedded and stained by hematoxylin-eosin and Giemsa. The results showed that challenged mice exhibited mild duodenitis and gastritis. In group GA, infiltration in the duodenum was lymphoplasmacytic until day 35; in group GB, it was lymphomonocytic for 60 days pi. In the stomach, H. pylori induced lymphomonocytic infiltration that was present from days 7 to 60 in group GA. In group GB, it was only present from days 14 to 35. In conclusion, our data suggested that freezing altered pathogenic properties of H. pylori and probably inhibited expression of bacterial antigens and consequently the establishment and maintenance of infection. Although the animals developed mild duodenitis and gastritis, the BALB/c mouse is not susceptible to developing peptic ulcers during H. pylori infection.38101-
