    Refracting profiles and generalized holodiagrams

    The recently developed concept of refracting profiles and that of refraction holodiagrams are combined so that the classical Abramson holodiagrams can be generalized taking into account a wider class of wave fronts and refraction at an interface, whenever regions of caustics are avoided. These holodiagrams are obtained as envelopes of specific families of Cartesian Ovals with an appropriate parametrization. Classical and reflecting holodiagrams are particular cases of this class.     We propose the display of the local spatial variance of the temporal variations of the phase as an activity descriptor in dynamic speckle images. The spatial autocorrelation of the speckle intensity is calculated in sliding windows, and an estimation of the variance of the phase variations in each region of the sample is determined. The activity images obtained in this way depict some interesting features and in some cases they could be related to physical magnitudes in the samples. A simulation is presented, and examples corresponding to usual study cases are also shown, namely, fruit bruising and paint drying

    La Cantalera: an exceptional window onto the vertebrate biodiversity of the Hauterivian-Barremian transition in the Iberian Peninsula.

    La Cantalera is an accumulation site for fossil vertebrates consisting mainly of teeth and isolated postcranial remains. It has the greatest vertebrate biodiversity of any site from the Hauterivian-Barremian transition in the Iberian Peninsula. Up to now, 31 vertebrate taxa have been recognized: an osteichthyan (Teleostei indet.), two amphibians (Albanerpetonidae indet. and Discoglossidae indet.), a chelonian (Pleurosternidae? indet.), a lizard (Paramacellodidae? indet.), four crocodylomorphs (cf. Theriosuchus sp., Bernissartiidae indet., Goniopholididae indet., cf. Lisboasaurus sp.), two pterosaurs (Istiodactylidae? indet., Ornithocheiridae? indet.), four ornithopod dinosaurs (Iguanodontoidea indet., Hadrosauroidea? indet., “Hypsilophodontidae” indet., Rhabdodontidae? indet.), a thyreophoran (Polacanthidae indet.), a sauropod (Euhelopodidae indet.), eleven theropods (Carcharodontosauridae? indet., Baryonychinae indet., aff. Paronychodon sp., Maniraptora indet. 1-3, Dromaeosaurinae indet. 1-3, Velociraptorinae indet., Avialae? indet.) and three or four multituberculate mammals (Cantalera abadi, Eobaatar sp., Plagiaulacidae or Eobaataridae gen. et sp. indet., “Plagiaulacida” indet.). Nine ootaxa have also been distinguished at the site of La Cantalera. Oofamilies assigned to dinosaurs (Elongaloolithidae, Prismatoolithidae, cf. Spheroolithidae), to crocodiles (Krokolithidae) and eggshells of two oofamilies incertidae sedis are represented. This association is consistent with the record of bone and tooth remains from the site. La Cantalera was formed in a marshy environment where there was an intermittent body of water. The great majority of the vertebrate fossil remains lack evidence of transport, so the preserved association is a good representation of the vertebrate ecosystem in or around the marshy area of La Cantalera. The vertebrate association of La Cantalera displays certain differences with respect to those from lacustrine environments of the Hauterivian-Barremian transition of the Iberian Range. These differences include, for example, the absence of Chondrichthyes, the merely token presence of the osteichthyans, the scarcity of chelonians, the presence of exclusively multituberculate mammals, the lower diversity of sauropods and the greater diversity of theropods

    Análisis de la aplicabilidad del modelo de Bohr acerca de la predicción de las líneas de emisión del átomo de helio en el marco del dictado de Física Moderna en la Facultad de Ingeniería de la UNLP

    El dictado de la materia Física IIIA de las carreras de Ingeniería Electrónica (IE1), Electricista (IE2) y Química (IQ) dictadas en la Facultad de Ingeniería (FI) de la Universidad Nacional de La Plata (UNLP) abarca dos módulos bimestrales. En el segundo de ellos se abordan temas de Física Moderna y entre las actividades de laboratorio establecidas, los alumnos deben realizar un experimento destinado a determinar las líneas características de emisión de una lámpara de gas de He a baja presión utilizando un espectrómetro portátil. En el presente trabajo se describe el instrumental utilizado, la metodología experimental adoptada, se presentan las mediciones realizadas de las líneas características emitidas por el átomo He (HeI) y se las compara con las líneas publicadas en la literatura. A partir del uso del modelo de Bohr para el caso del átomo de He+1 simplemente ionizado (HeII), se estiman las longitudes de onda emitidas por el ión HeII y se las compara con las líneas características del HeII publicadas. También en el marco del modelo de Bohr, se calculan las longitudes de onda emitidas por el átomo HeI despreciando la repulsión entre los electrones y se las compara con las líneas observadas en el laboratorio. Finalmente, se analiza la aplicabilidad del modelo de Bohr en la descripción de los sistemas HeI y HeII.The Physic IIIA course of the Electronic, Electric and Chemical Engineering degrees of La Plata University includes two modules of two months each. The second teaching module includes Modern Physic topics. In special, in the laboratory activities, students carry out an experiment to determine the characteristic emission lines of an He lamp using a didactic spectrometer. In the present work, we describe the approach used in the laboratory and the experimental methodology. We present the emission lines measured and we compare these measurements with the He emission lines reported in the literature. From the Bohr model, we estimate the emitted wave length for the case of the He+1 ion (The He atom without an electron) and we compare these wave lengths with the lines published. In this sense, we also calculate the emitted lines of the He atom in the frame of the Bohr model and we compare these calculations with the lines measured in the laboratory.     Information retrieval and text mining technologies for chemistry

    Efficient access to chemical information contained in scientific literature, patents, technical reports, or the web is a pressing need shared by researchers and patent attorneys from different chemical disciplines. Retrieval of important chemical information in most cases starts with finding relevant documents for a particular chemical compound or family. Targeted retrieval of chemical documents is closely connected to the automatic recognition of chemical entities in the text, which commonly involves the extraction of the entire list of chemicals mentioned in a document, including any associated information. In this Review, we provide a comprehensive and in-depth description of fundamental concepts, technical implementations, and current technologies for meeting these information demands. A strong focus is placed on community challenges addressing systems performance, more particularly CHEMDNER and CHEMDNER patents tasks of BioCreative IV and V, respectively. Considering the growing interest in the construction of automatically annotated chemical knowledge bases that integrate chemical information and biological data, cheminformatics approaches for mapping the extracted chemical names into chemical structures and their subsequent annotation together with text mining applications for linking chemistry with biological information are also presented.
