    Impact of oats on appetite hormones and body weight management: A Review

    ProducciĂłn CientĂ­ficaPurpose of Review: This study aims to review the hunger hormones in obesity management and the impact of oats in regulating these hormones for hunger suppression and body weight management. In this review, the impact of various edible forms of oats like whole, naked, sprouted, or supplemented has been investigated for their appetite hormones regulation and weight management. Recent Findings: The onset of obesity has been greatly associated with the appetite-regulating hormones that control, regulate, and suppress hunger, satiety, or energy expenditure. Many observational and clinical studies prove that oats have a positive effect on anthropometric measures like BMI, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, lipid profile, total cholesterol, weight, appetite, and blood pressure. Many studies support the concept that oats are rich in protein, fiber, healthy fats, Fe, Zn, Mg, Mn, free phenolics, Ăź-glucan, ferulic acid, avenanthramides, and many more. Beta-glucan is the most important bioactive component that lowers cholesterol levels and supports the defense system of the body to prevent infections. Hence, several clinical studies supported oats utilization against obesity, appetite hormones, and energy regulation but still, some studies have shown no or little significance on appetite.     Is probiotics supplementation an appropriate strategy to modulate inflammation in physically active healthy adults or athletes? A systematic review

    Producción CientíficaSupplementation with probiotics in sports is on the rise with the aim of improving health and athletic performance. Since intense exercise-induced muscle damage leads to an inflammatory process by increasing circulating inflammatory cytokines, probiotic supplementation may modulate and correct the inflammation. We systematically reviewed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines in the Scopus, Web of Science, and Medline databases for the 10 years until January 2023. This review aimed to evaluate probiotic supplementation as a strategy for modulating inflammation in healthy physically active adults or athletes. Studies were indexed to assess the effect of probiotic supplementation on cytokine behavior in the inflammatory response in physically active individuals. Of the 136 studies identified in the search, 13 met the inclusion criteria, and their quality was assessed using the McMaster Critical Review Form. The results of these trials indicated a significant improvement in inflammatory cytokines in probiotic-supplemented participants, with a significant increase in anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10) and a significant decrease in proinflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-8). This would create uncertainty about probiotics’ effect on interleukins’ behavior after exercise, and further clinical trials are needed to establish a solid basis

    Digital transformation in the agri-food industry: recent applications and the role of the COVID-19 pandemic

    Providing food has become more complex because of climate change and other environmental and societal stressors, such as political instability, the growth in the world population, and outbreaks of new diseases, especially the COVID-19 pandemic. In response to these challenges, the agri-food industry has increased its efforts to shift to using more digital tools and other advanced technologies. The transition toward digital has been part of the fourth industrial revolution (called Industry 4.0) innovations that have and are reshaping most industries. This literature review discusses the potential of implementing digital technologies in the agri-food industry, focusing heavily on the role of the COVID-19 pandemic in fostering the adoption of greater digitalization of food supply chains. Examples of the use of these digital innovations for various food applications, and the barriers and challenges will be highlighted. The trend toward digital solutions has gained momentum since the advent of Industry 4.0 and implementations of these solutions have been accelerated by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Important digital technology enablers that have high potential for mitigating the negative effects of both the current global health pandemic and the environmental crisis on food systems include artificial intelligence, big data, the Internet of Things, blockchain, smart sensors, robotics, digital twins, and virtual and augmented reality. However, much remains to be done to fully harness the power of Industry 4.0 technologies and achieve widespread implementation of digitalization in the agriculture and food industries

    Vegetable oils (VOs), being our major dietary fat source, play a vital role in nourishment. Different VOs have highly contrasting fatty acid (FA) profiles and hence possess varying levels of health protectiveness. Consumption of a single VO cannot meet the recommended allowances of various FA either from saturated FA (SFA), monounsaturated FA (MUFA), polyunsaturated FA (PUFA), Ω-3 PUFAs, and medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs). Coconut oil (CO), flaxseed oil (FO), olive oil (OO), and sunflower oil (SFO) are among the top listed contrast VOs that are highly appreciated based on their rich contents of SFAs, Ω-3 PUFAs, MUFAs, and Ω-6 PUFA, respectively. Besides being protective against various disease biomarkers, these contrasting VOs are still inappropriate when consumed alone in 100% of daily fat recommendations. This review compiles the available data on blending of such contrasting VOs into single tailored blended oil (BO) with suitable FA composition to meet the recommended levels of SFA, MUFA, PUFA, MCTs, and Ω-3 to Ω-6 PUFA ratios which could ultimately serve as a cost-effective dietary intervention towards the health protectiveness and improvement of the whole population in general. The blending of any two or more VOs from CO, FO, OO, and SFO in the form of binary, ternary, or another type of blending was found to be very conclusive towards balancing FA composition; enhancing physiochemical and stability properties; and promising the therapeutic protectiveness of the resultant BOs

    The Side Effects and Adverse Clinical Cases Reported after COVID-19 Immunization

    COVID-19 remains a deadly disease that poses a serious threat to humanity. COVID-19 vaccines protect the public and limit viral spread. However, public acceptance is significantly dependent on the efficacy and side effects (SEs) of the vaccinations being produced. Four important mechanisms have been examined for COVID-19 vaccines: DNA-based, mRNA-based, protein-based, and inactivated viruses. Vaccination safety research was formerly limited to manufacturer-sponsored studies, but numerous additional cross-sectional survey-based studies conducted globally have contributed to the generation of vaccine-related safety data reports. Twenty-seven studies and twenty-four case reports published-up till 2021 were overviewed for the presentation of SEs and their severity. Injection site pain remained the most dominant localized SE, while headache and fatigue were the most prevalent systemic SEs. Most studies reported that all vaccinations were safe, with very little or no adverse effects, but the nature of SEs was reported to be more persistent in DNA- and mRNA-based vaccines, while inactivated viral vaccines were associated with longer-duration SEs. Overall, SEs were found to be more dominant in women and youngsters. Case reports of adverse reactions have also been documented, but there is still a need to find out their pathological linkage with the COVID-19 vaccination

    Effect of fennel seeds fortified crackers on various obesity biomarkers

    Obesity is linked to a range of major medical consequences, collectively known as “insulin resistance syndrome”. About 40 % of the world's adult population is overweight, with obesity affecting over 14 % of adults, while obesity rates exceed 50 % in some countries. Obesity disrupts the metabolic balance and harms many body organs. Fennel seed (Foeniculum vulgare) is a spice used all over the world. It is a rich source of dietary fiber and different phytochemicals. Fennel is a well-known therapeutic plant used to control obesity in traditional medicine and has a sweet flavor that can be integrated into a new recipe. In this study, fennel seeds were incorporated in different percentages to develop crackers, and their bioefficacy was evaluated against traditional cholesterol-lowering medicine and traditional herbal therapies for obesity. Three treatments (T0, T1, and T2) were evaluated on humans, where T1 showed the best results in all parameters and was hence considered to be the best treatment. Participants in T0 showed only a slight change in their body mass index (BMI) values in 45 days, whereas T1 participants saw a decrease in BMI from 38.48 to 36.95 kg/m2 in 45 days. Conclusively, fennel seed-fortified crackers can dramatically lower BMI while also enhancing lipid profiles

The essential oil of lemongrass contains a series of terpenes that are responsible for these activities. These properties make lemongrass acceptable in the food industry and may fulfill consumer demands.
