    Integration of Design, Thermal, Structural, and Optical Analysis, Including Thermal Animation

    In many industries there has recently been a concerted movement toward 'quality management' and the issue of how to accomplish work more efficiently. Part of this effort is focused on concurrent engineering; the idea of integrating the design and analysis processes so that they are not separate, sequential processes (often involving design rework due to analytical findings) but instead form an integrated system with smooth transfers of information. Presented herein are several specific examples of concurrent engineering methods being carried out at Langley Research Center (LaRC): integration of thermal, structural and optical analyses to predict changes in optical performance based on thermal and structural effects; integration of the CAD design process with thermal and structural analyses; and integration of analysis and presentation by animating the thermal response of a system as an active color map -- a highly effective visual indication of heat flow

    Acoustic design considerations: Review of rotor acoustic sources

    It is not sufficient to optimize a rotor design in terms of a single noise level calculated for a single flight condition and a single measurement location. The various noise sources, their frequency content, amplitude, and directivity as a function of operating condition must be considered. A summary of the frequency ranges, directivity patterns and the most important operational and design parameters for major rotor noise sources is presented. It is difficult to generalize design requirements for rotor noise because the acoustic output varies so widely depending on the noise source, flight condition, measurement location, and frequency range. However, assuming the rotor must lift a fixed nominal payload and operate over a wide range of flight conditions, three general design guidelines can be stated: (1) minimize tip Mach number; (2) minimize blade thickness in the tip region; and (3) minimize gradients in the spanwise lift distribution in the tip region. Constraints on blade thickness, maximum values for hover tip Mach number, advancing tip Mach number and spanwise lift coefficient gradient will be specified during the aerodynamic, dynamic and structural optimization process. The rotor noise sources to be considered include the low frequency loading and thickness noise, and the higher frequency noise due to blade-vortex interactions (BVI). The analyses to be employed will include the comprehensive rotor analysis and design program CAMRAD and the rotor noise prediction program WOPWOP

    Depression and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

    For over two decades clinical studies have been conducted which suggest the existence of a relationship between depression and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Recently, Ohayon underscored the evidence for a link between these two disorders in the general population, showing that 800 out of 100,000 individuals had both, a breathing-related sleep disorder and a major depressive disorder, with up to 20% of the subjects presenting with one of these disorders also having the other. In some populations, depending on age, gender and other demographic and health characteristics, the prevalence of both disorders may be even higher: OSA may affect more than 50% of individuals over the age of 65, and significant depressive symptoms may be present in as many as 26% of a community-dwelling population of older adults. In clinical practice, the presence of depressive symptomatology is often considered in patients with OSA, and may be accounted for and followed-up when considering treatment approaches and response to treatment. On the other hand, sleep problems and specifically OSA are rarely assessed on a regular basis in patients with a depressive disorder. However, OSA might not only be associated with a depressive syndrome, but its presence may also be responsible for failure to respond to appropriate pharmacological treatment. Furthermore, an undiagnosed OSA might be exacerbated by adjunct treatments to antidepressant medications, such as benzodiazepines. Increased awareness of the relationship between depression and OSA might significantly improve diagnostic accuracy as well as treatment outcome for both disorders. In this review, we will summarize important findings in the current literature regarding the association between depression and OSA, and the possible mechanisms by which both disorders interact. Implications for clinical practice will be discussed

    Tracking solutions in tachyon cosmology

    We perform a thorough phase-plane analysis of the flow defined by the equations of motion of a FRW universe filled with a tachyonic fluid plus a barotropic one. The tachyon potential is assumed to be of inverse square form, thus allowing for a two-dimensional autonomous system of equations. The Friedmann constraint, combined with a convenient choice of coordinates, renders the physical state compact. We find the fixed-point solutions, and discuss whether they represent attractors or not. The way the two fluids contribute at late-times to the fractional energy density depends on how fast the barotropic fluid redshifts. If it does it fast enough, the tachyonic fluid takes over at late times, but if the opposite happens, the situation will not be completely dominated by the barotropic fluid; instead there will be a residual non-negligible contribution from the tachyon subject to restrictions coming from nucleosynthesis.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
