    The objective of this development task is to check and modify the active dosimeter, developed at the University of Saarland, for use in space and to construct a prototype. Under the study at hand, the corresponding premises and concepts are to be created. Active dosimetry creates an opportunity of determining the radiation exposure in its LET (linear energy transfer) distribution as a function of time and, hence, of the dwelling place. In addition to this, the application potentials of active dosimetry both within and without spaceflight are listed.     The objective of the present study, within the framework of the political intent of the German Space Agency (DARA) and the Federal Ministry for Research and Technology (BMFT), was to put more emphasis on integrating the New States into German space activities and, in addition to the scientists who were involved anyway, to inform a wide circle of scientists about micro-g experimenting capabilities and the relevant DARA research programs as well as to determine the demand for experiments. All told, 21 proposed experiments were identified, from which 6 project proposals from the fields of biology and materials sciences were derived. In addition to this, a compilation of scientific facilities with potential micro-g relevance of their research tasks was developed.     The liquid separator to be developed within the scope of this project is designed to prevent any fuel particles, which are carried along by the high-pressure gas during refueling of surface tension tanks under conditions near 0 g, from escaping through the tank vent valve. The development of a liquid separator for space applications requires a careful analyses and comparison of the effective principles and their embodiment variants. For this reason, functional models of separators were developed and their functioning was verified by means of a test bed.     KOKOGUS. Design of a communication network between Western Europe and the CIS for future joint space projects Executive summary

    The KOKOGUS study scrutinizes the capabilities of existing and planned communication networks or services and compares them with the requirements of future joint space projects between Western Europe and the CIS. This comparison is rounded off by an analysis of legal aspects, which have to be considered in the definition of communication concepts. The study comes to the conclusion that the communication requirements of almost all projects under realization are moderate and can be covered either by the incorporation of commercial communication services or by the exploitation of the already existing dedicated infrastructure for space missions. This is demonstrated in several case studies. The study proposes to build the communication network around the existing satellite link between the Russian Mission Control Center in Kaliningrad near Moscow and the German Space Operations Center near Munich. This is the most economic approach since it takes advantage of the enormous capabilities and experiences of both centers. Future projects with extremely complex communication requirements show a strong tendency towards the exploitation of Western systems which are beyond the scope of the present study.     As a result of the completed study phase PLATO Phase III one can establish in general that the PLATO concept has been further detailed in crucial areas and that the majority of the deficits indicated in the present investigations have been eliminated. The further development of the concept covered the entire range of subjects and included: the further development of the overall configuration; detailing of selected subsystems; the analysis of usable/required infrastructures; further development of a testing concept; and investigation of the flight characteristics of a free flying controlled model in the wind tunnel. These theoretical investigations and the practical experience gathered with regard to the flight and control characteristics permit the statement that the basic objectives of the proposed concept can be maintained.
