Abstract

As a result of the completed study phase PLATO Phase III one can establish in general that the PLATO concept has been further detailed in crucial areas and that the majority of the deficits indicated in the present investigations have been eliminated. The further development of the concept covered the entire range of subjects and included: the further development of the overall configuration; detailing of selected subsystems; the analysis of usable/required infrastructures; further development of a testing concept; and investigation of the flight characteristics of a free flying controlled model in the wind tunnel. These theoretical investigations and the practical experience gathered with regard to the flight and control characteristics permit the statement that the basic objectives of the proposed concept can be maintained.
