    Wavelength Dependence of Solar Rotation and Solar Cycle UV Irradiance Variations

    It is shown that for the 5-year period 1982 to 1987 the solar irradiance decrease is estimated to be about 5 to 7 percent over the spectral interval 195 to 225 nm. This change becomes progressively smaller with increasing wavelength. For the 2-1/3 year period, January 1987 to April 1989, the irradiance increases about 6 percent at 195 to 205 nm and about 2 percent between 215 to 250 nm. Both 27-day and 13.5-day relative amplitudes peak at the time near solar maximum (1982) but remain comparatively small between 1983 and the onset of solar cycle 22. An average 280 day oscillation is noted for wavelengths up to 230 nm. No physical mechanism is offered for this variation

    Weighted Diffeomorphic Density Matching with Applications to Thoracic Image Registration

    In this article we study the problem of thoracic image registration, in particular the estimation of complex anatomical deformations associated with the breathing cycle. Using the intimate link between the Riemannian geometry of the space of diffeomorphisms and the space of densities, we develop an image registration framework that incorporates both the fundamental law of conservation of mass as well as spatially varying tissue compressibility properties.     Small-scale structures and the density irregularity of the inner corona

    The observational evidence is considered that the electron density irregularity factor is much greater than unity in the inner corona, in particular, evidence derived from the photometric comparison of the K-corona emission p Beta with the EUV emission from coronal ions. A simple mathematical model was developed for the irregularity having a minimum number of parameters. This model was used to explore some implications of the observations and to show that well-known resolved structures such as polar plumes and coronal loops as presently understood cannot alone explain the irregularity

    The solar spectral irradiance 1200-3184 a near solar maximum, 15 July 1980

    Full disk solar spectral irradiances near solar maximum were obtained in the spectral range 1200 to 3184 A at a spectral resolution of approximately 1 A from rocket observations above White Sands Missile Range. Comparison with measurements made during solar minimum confirm a large increase at solar maximum in the solar irradiance near 1200 A with no change within the measurement errors near 2000 A. Irradiances in the range 1900 to 2100 A are in excellent agreement with previous measurements, and those in the 2100 to 2500 A range are lower than separate previous results in this range. Agreement is found with previous values 2500 to 2900 A A, and then fall below those values 2900 to 3184 A

    Sins sans suffering: children's moralization of victimless actions

    Many traditional accounts of moral development posit that children actively construct moral beliefs by reasoning about the distress they directly perceive in the aftermath of harmful or unjust actions. However, these accounts cannot straightforwardly explain the development of moral beliefs about harmless but tabooed actions. For cases such as these, when no negative behavioral consequences are apparent, top-down socialization processes (e.g., verbal instruction or "testimony" from adults) may instead influence moral development, as well as emotional reactions such as disgust. The present research consists of four studies that empirically examine the mechanisms leading to the formation of moral values involving victimless actions. Seven-year-old children were recruited as participants in this research. They were shown pictures of anthropomorphic aliens engaged in novel body-focused or environment-focused actions, all of which were harmless. After being exposed to one of various experimental manipulations, children were asked to judge whether the depicted actions were "wrong" or "OK". It was hypothesized that participants would readily acquire new moral beliefs upon being exposed to each of the experimental manipulations that were employed, even though none invoked suffering or harm. Study 1 (N = 64) found that information about unnaturalness and the invocation of disgust each elevated moralization, and that their independent effects were compounded when these manipulations were presented jointly. Study 2 (N = 90) demonstrated that verbally presented testimony about disgust, but not the induced emotional experience of disgust, was an effective mechanism for moralization, particularly for children who were more disgust sensitive. Study 3 (N = 30) found that children responded to testimony about anger with similar patterns of moralization as when given testimony about disgust, but that anger-based testimony was especially effective for children who were more highly prone to anger. Study 4 (N = 28) found that children's moral beliefs were retained after a prolonged time delay. In sum, across four studies, children were found to rapidly form new moral beliefs about victimless actions, particularly upon exposure to emotionally laden testimony. Overall, this research demonstrates that children are susceptible to swiftly acquiring moral beliefs even in the absence of obvious adverse outcomes

    The Relationship of Team Goal Orientation with Team Processes and Outcomes

    As teams are highly prevalent in organizations, it is beneficial to examine inputs that facilitate effective team processes and outcomes. This research examined the relationship between goal orientation and important team processes (communication, interpersonal conflict, task conflict, and social loafing) and how these processes, in turn, impacted team performance and satisfaction. The moderating role of task interdependence was also examined. Information was gathered from 270 individuals (83 teams) who were enrolled in graduate and undergraduate courses that required a team project. Results indicated that team learning goal orientation was positively related to increased communication and decreased task conflict, interpersonal conflict, and social loafing. Prove goal orientation was significantly related to communication. Avoid goal orientation was related to decreased communication and increased interpersonal conflict. In contrast to past literature, no significant relationships were found between team processes and team performance and satisfaction; however, task interdependence did moderate the relationship between task conflict and performance along with the relationship between social loafing and satisfaction. Theoretical and practical implications concerning team goal orientation are discussed
