Synthetic 26Al emission from galactic-scale superbubble simulations
© 2019 The Author(s).Emission from the radioactive trace element 26Al has been observed throughout the Milky Way with the COMPTEL and INTEGRAL satellites. In particular the Doppler shifts measured with INTEGRAL connect 26Al with superbubbles, which may guide 26Al flows off spiral arms in the direction of Galactic rotation. In order to test this paradigm, we have performed galaxy-scale simulations of superbubbles with 26Al injection in a Milky Way-type galaxy. We produce all-sky synthetic ray emission maps of the simulated galaxies. We find that the 1809keV emission from the radioactive decay of 26Al is highly variable with time and the observer's position. This allows us to estimate an additional systematic variability of 0.2dex for a star formation rate derived from 26Al for different times and measurement locations in Milky Way-type galaxies. High-latitude morphological features indicate nearby emission with correspondingly high integrated gamma-ray intensities. We demonstrate that the 26Al scale height from our simulated galaxies depends on the assumed halo gas density. We present the first synthetic 1809keV longitude-velocity diagrams from 3D hydrodynamic simulations. The line-of-sight velocities for 26Al can be significantly different from the line-of-sight velocities associated with the cold gas. Over time, 26Al velocities consistent with the INTEGRAL observations, within uncertainties, appear at any given longitude, broadly supporting previous suggestions that 26Al injected into expanding superbubbles by massive stars may be responsible for the high velocities found in the INTEGRAL observations. Derivatives of spin dynamics simulations
We report analytical equations for the derivatives of spin dynamics
simulations with respect to pulse sequence and spin system parameters. The
methods described are significantly faster, more accurate and more reliable
than the finite difference approximations typically employed. The resulting
derivatives may be used in fitting, optimization, performance evaluation and
stability analysis of spin dynamics simulations and experiments.

Chemical chronology of the Southern Coalsack
We demonstrate how the observed H2O ice column densities toward three dense
globules in the Southern Coalsack could be used to constrain the ages of these
sources. We derive ages of ~10^5 yr, in agreement with dynamical studies of
these objects. We have modelled the chemical evolution of the globules, and
show how the molecular abundances are controlled by both the gas density and
the initial chemical conditions as the globules formed. Based on our derived
ages, we predict the column densities of several species of interest. These
predictions should be straightforward to test by performing molecular line

Transcriptome profiling of granulosa cells of bovine ovarian follicles during growth from small to large antral sizes
Background: At later stages of folliculogenesis, the mammalian ovarian follicle contains layers of epithelial granulosa cells surrounding an antral cavity. During follicle development granulosa cells replicate, secrete hormones and support the growth of the oocyte. In cattle, the follicle needs to grow > 10 mm in diameter to allow an oocyte to ovulate, following which the granulosa cells cease dividing and differentiate into the specialised cells of the corpus luteum. To better understand the molecular basis of follicular growth and granulosa cell maturation, we undertook transcriptome profiling of granulosa cells from small ( 10 mm, n = 4) healthy bovine follicles using Affymetrix microarrays (24,128 probe sets).Results: Principal component analysis for the first two components and hierarchical clustering showed clustering into two groups, small and large, with the former being more heterogeneous. Size-frequency distributions of the coefficient of variation of the signal intensities of each probe set also revealed that small follicles were more heterogeneous than the large. IPA and GO enrichment analyses revealed that processes of axonal guidance, immune signalling and cell rearrangement were most affected in large follicles. The most important networks were associated with: (A) Notch, SLIT/ROBO and PI3K signalling, and (B) ITGB5 and extracellular matrix signalling through extracellular signal related kinases (ERKs). Upstream regulator genes which were predicted to be active in large follicles included STAT and XBP1. By comparison, developmental processes such as those stimulated by KIT, IHH and MEST were most active in small follicles. MGEA5 was identified as an upstream regulator in small follicles. It encodes an enzyme that modifies the activity of many target proteins, including those involved in energy sensing, by removal of N-acetylglucosamine from serine and threonine residues.Conclusions: Our data suggest that as follicles enlarge more genes and/or pathways are activated than are inactivated, and gene expression becomes more uniform. Ohio's statewide land use inventory: An operational approach for applying LANDSAT data to state, regional and local planning programs
The programmatic, technical, user application, and cost factors associated with the development of an operational, statewide land use inventory from LANDSAT data are described. The LANDSAT multispectral data are subjected to geometrical and categorical processing to produce map files for each of the 200 fifteen (15) minute quads covering Ohio. Computer compatible tapes are rescanned to produce inventory tapes which identify eight (8) Level I land use categories and a variety of Level II categories. The inventory tapes are processed through a series of ten (10) software programs developed by the State of Ohio. The net result is a computerized inventory which can be displayed in map or tabular form for various geographic units, at a variety of scales and for selected categories of usage. The computerized inventory data files are applied to technical programs developed by the various state agencies to be used in state, regional, and local planning programs
Transcriptome profiling of granulosa cells from bovine ovarian follicles during atresia
Background: The major function of the ovary is to produce oocytes for fertilisation. Oocytes mature in follicles surrounded by nurturing granulosa cells and all are enclosed by a basal lamina. During growth, granulosa cells replicate and a large fluid-filled cavity (the antrum) develops in the centre. Only follicles that have enlarged to over 10 mm can ovulate in cows. In mammals, the number of primordial follicles far exceeds the numbers that ever ovulate and atresia or regression of follicles is a mechanism to regulate the number of oocytes ovulated and to contribute to the timing of ovulation. To better understand the molecular basis of follicular atresia, we undertook transcriptome profiling of granulosa cells from healthy (n = 10) and atretic (n = 5) bovine follicles at early antral stages (< 5 mm). Results: Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and hierarchical classification of the signal intensity plots for the arrays showed primary clustering into two groups, healthy and atretic. These analyses and size-frequency plots of coefficients of variation of signal intensities revealed that the healthy follicles were more heterogeneous. Examining the differentially-expressed genes the most significantly affected functions in atretic follicles were cell death, organ development, tissue development and embryonic development. The overall processes influenced by transcription factor gene TP53 were predicted to be activated, whereas those of MYC were inhibited on the basis of known interactions with the genes in our dataset. The top ranked canonical pathway contained signalling molecules common to various inflammatory/fibrotic pathways such as the transforming growth factor-beta and tumour necrosis factor-alpha pathways. The two most significant networks also reflect this pattern of tissue remodelling/fibrosis gene expression. These networks also contain molecules which are present in the canonical pathways of hepatic fibrosis/hepatic stellate cell activation and transforming growth factor-beta signalling and were up regulated. Conclusions: Small healthy antral follicles, which have a number of growth outcomes, exhibit greater variability in gene expression, particularly in genes associated with cell division and other growth-related functions. Likelihood informed dimension reduction for inverse problems in remote sensing of atmospheric constituent profiles
We use likelihood informed dimension reduction (LIS) (T. Cui et al. 2014) for
inverting vertical profile information of atmospheric methane from ground based
Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) measurements at Sodankyl\"a, Northern
Finland. The measurements belong to the word wide TCCON network for greenhouse
gas measurements and, in addition to providing accurate greenhouse gas
measurements, they are important for validating satellite observations. LIS
allows construction of an efficient Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling algorithm
that explores only a reduced dimensional space but still produces a good
approximation of the original full dimensional Bayesian posterior distribution.
This in effect makes the statistical estimation problem independent of the
discretization of the inverse problem. In addition, we compare LIS to a
dimension reduction method based on prior covariance matrix truncation used
earlier (S. Tukiainen et al. 2016)
A molecular perspective on the limits of life: Enzymes under pressure
From a purely operational standpoint, the existence of microbes that can grow
under extreme conditions, or "extremophiles", leads to the question of how the
molecules making up these microbes can maintain both their structure and
function. While microbes that live under extremes of temperature have been
heavily studied, those that live under extremes of pressure have been
neglected, in part due to the difficulty of collecting samples and performing
experiments under the ambient conditions of the microbe. However, thermodynamic
arguments imply that the effects of pressure might lead to different organismal
solutions than from the effects of temperature. Observationally, some of these
solutions might be in the condensed matter properties of the intracellular
milieu in addition to genetic modifications of the macromolecules or repair
mechanisms for the macromolecules. Here, the effects of pressure on enzymes,
which are proteins essential for the growth and reproduction of an organism,
and some adaptations against these effects are reviewed and amplified by the
results from molecular dynamics simulations. The aim is to provide biological
